Valentine's isn't just about the happy stuff. Lots of people get real psycho about love. Have you ever had or been a stalker?

There was a guy who used to come to my house and peer in all the windows instead of coming to the front door.

I remember one strange occurrence. It was afternoon and I took this nap. Then...I opened my eyes, and the before sun-lit room was now wrapped in outer darkness. Instantly I felt a shock running through all my frame; nothing was to be seen, and nothing was to be heard; but a supernatural hand seemed placed in mine. My arm hung over the counterpane, and the nameless, unimaginable, silent form or phantom, to which the hand belonged, seemed closely seated by my bedside. For what seemed ages piled on ages, I lay there, frozen with the most awful fears, not daring to drag away my hand; yet ever thinking that if I could but stir it one single inch, the horrid spell would be broken. I knew not how this consciousness at last glided away from me; but waking in the morning, I shudderingly remembered it all, and for days and weeks and months afterwards I lost myself in confounding attempts to explain the mystery. I figured out eventually it was this girl Tiffany from my history class. She moved on to some other dude soon enough though. She had weird tits.

Same here! Annoying phone calls, a constant stream of sad bastard mix tapes, etc.

Annoying phones calls then weird letters then creepy notes under my windshield wipers then lots of hang up phone calls then parked outside my house overnight then a rock with a scary note through my bedroom window.

luna (luna), Thursday, 15 February 2007 03:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Crap, thats bad!

I got accused of *being* a stalker once. By this ex of mine who would invite me over to his place, and then sit there and play GTA and refuse to talk to me, leaving me sitting there awkwardly til I gave up and went home.

Apparantly having done that once or twice is stalking. Feh.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 15 February 2007 03:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh I know that guy! I had one that I moved to another state for, then he said I'm going home, I don't care what you do, but by the time it came time to go home, he begged me to go, so I stupidly did. Tried to leave a month or two later when I found out he was boning my best friend but he broke down and cried at the airport and begged me to stay, so I stupidly did, only to have him - an hour and a half after we got home from the aborted flight - turn to me and say, 'why are you HERE?'

luna (luna), Thursday, 15 February 2007 03:17 (seventeen years ago) link

That was probably tmi. (I left the next day.)

luna (luna), Thursday, 15 February 2007 03:17 (seventeen years ago) link

That is mental.
I think I may have two new stalkers. They sent me Valentine messages yesterday. Still, I guess I can't really complain. At least someone is thinking of me. Same theory as bad publicity v's no publicity right?

Hard like armour (Hard like armour), Thursday, 15 February 2007 03:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I just went to a lecture on civil protective orders in domestic violence situations and according to a recent U of Kentucky study, the strongest indicator that a perpetrator will violate a protective order is stalking behavior in addition to your run of the mill battery.

There are some scary stats about stalking.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 15 February 2007 03:37 (seventeen years ago) link

When I was in the midst of divorcing, working on a y2k DOD project in fucking Maple Grove MN (sorry Hastings sorts) so living in a hotel, I did some "internet dating" via the Yahoo personals (yikes what WAS I thinking). This has left me with instructive tales for others, peppered with characters like "Knife Guy", "Northfield Stalker", and "Guy who had a Heart Attack before I even Met him".

Knife Guy was the most psycho I think. But the Northfield Stalker was pretty bad - he got irritated that I left my ad up (this was the olden days) after I had met him. And, he knew where I was working (i r stoopid), and that I was on a night shift. He was waiting in the dark parking lot twice, until I turned screaming laser-beam-eyed harpie, armed with a phillips screwdriver and a clawhammer.

jaq (jaq), Thursday, 15 February 2007 03:41 (seventeen years ago) link

One of my partners came out one day dressed up as a sort of Hannibal Lecter - grey shirt buttoned right up, and greyish makeup painted under his eyes and cheekbones to look all sepulchural. He then proceeded to stare evilly at me for about an hour without speaking, despite the fact I went from "wtf are you doing" to hysterics because he honestly wouldn't break character. Fucking psycho.

Um, thats not a stalker story I guess, but man that guy messed me around.

Isn't that kind of a 'duh'?

milo (milo), Thursday, 15 February 2007 03:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Seems so, but it contradicted the prevailing wisdom about what types of perps violate protective orders. I think part of the problem was a failure of the courts to recognize stalking behavior when women described it to them.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 15 February 2007 03:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I once had a stalker. This girl who was two years younger than me was stalking me in high school and I didn't even know it. She knew my phone numbers, address, and what shows I went to, despite never talking to her. I only found out later after I met her sister in college (I stayed local) and she introduced us. She was quite upfront about it, and said "I used to stalk you," then proceeded to tell me my class schedule from when I was in the eleventh grade.

I didn't know how to handle it. It didn't seem too creepy, and was actually a little flattered. She said that she used to have a crush on me, but was too shy to actually get my attention.

naus (naus), Thursday, 15 February 2007 05:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Harmless stalking like that is OK by me.

Hard like armour (Hard like armour), Thursday, 15 February 2007 06:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I have a client whose name I won't mention, who had a woman that was so infatuated with my client's hubby that she sent death threats to my client and it ended up with the stalker in a looney bin and on probation with a major restraining order. To date this stalker remains in the "retreat" an it's been over 6 months. Unlikely she will see the light of day without bars. This is the closest that I ever been, or want to be with a stalker. They are out of the real realm of mind. Nutcases.

Wiggy (wiggy), Thursday, 15 February 2007 06:45 (seventeen years ago) link

This didn't happen to me but I shall tell it anyway. A guy who studied in the same place I did, which is an all-girls school which also gave a course for people in college, had the whole of the 8th- and 9th-graders following him home after classes ended etc. They had put up a web site with pics of him, his address and stuff like that. Harmless stalking but really weird.

Also, the girls from those grades were amazing because at the beginning of a new school year they'd know the names of all the boys in that class, even BEFORE some of us knew each other's names. They would also usually know who dated who as soon as it happened. I never quite figured out how they did it, but god knows that place was weird, you were always constantly under the scrutiny of dozens of girls aged 12-14.

jibe (jibe), Thursday, 15 February 2007 09:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, a couple. I'm not sure where the line between harmless and not so harmless is any more. I think when someone starts turning up at your house, that's where the line gets crossed. The worst one followed me for years, using the internet to weasle out where I hung out and new email addresses and the like. This was the guy who hacked my email account, too, and started sending weird messages to my friends. (Luckily the friend he mailed saying "you know Kate is sleeping with your boyfriend" tweaked that he was nuts and let me know what was going on.)

Yes, I had.

nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 15 February 2007 10:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I used to be a little obsessive abt an unrequited crush many years ago but never "stalked" in the contemporary sense of the word. I know somebody whose ex-spouse seriously pursued & threatened their kids, resulting in an indentity change and frequent relocations plus paranoia to this day despite the ex now being incarcerated. so IMO the term gets tossed around to the point where it's meaningless.

I've never done anything out of the blue (lovebug ), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:12 (seventeen years ago) link

This is probably true. Some guy who follows you around and posts pictures of dinosaurs (old ILX example) after every time you post is not a Stalker - someone who turns up at your house or workplace unannounced, who threatens violence to you or loved ones (or threatens suicide), that is what I call a Stalker.

Though having been through the latter can make you a fuck of a lot less likely to view the former as funny or cute.

masonic boom (kate), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:16 (seventeen years ago) link

in my case i present you the following proof:

hacking into my email inbox as reading what i would be doing (or had done). then proceeding to come and reprimand for lying when i said i didn't go out anymore. "you did this and that."

nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I wasn't asking for proof!

masonic boom (kate), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I know. :-) I was actually more or less saying this to myself. It took me a long time to put the stalker label on that guy.

nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I wasn't calling you guys out on this! more of a culture-wide observation. clearly email and internets are stalkers paradise.
