is it today?

resumo impetus (blueski), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 13:25 (seventeen years ago) link

why a second vday thread?

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 14:38 (seventeen years ago) link

do we get to say "dud" on the other one full of happy couples?

Maria e (Maria), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I haven't opened it to find out, but I would add big, resounding DUD DUD DUD if we were allowed. But I'm too scared of the smug marrieds to open it up and find out. So I'm happy there's a counter thread for opposing viewpoints.

I LOVE MY WIFE

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:47 (seventeen years ago) link

ME TOO!

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I should rephrase that.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Dud dud dudder of the duds. And I don't even have a wife!

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:49 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost
haha, way to make Mr. Que's vday a dud!

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I would rather like a wife, though. Where can I get one? they sound like fun.

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Smug Marrieds, hmmm...

I do post a fair bit about Amber/Alice, and rarely about my wife, mainly because she's more keen on being a private person. She is outgoing and all that, so I tend not to come over all insufferable about this, to the point of being 'secretive' almost.

x-post does that make it more exciting?

Make what more exciting?

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah i don't think anyone on the internet could make my v day a dud!

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't want a foreign bride! I want a nice, local, organic wife or Ed will shout at me about my wife airmails!

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I love the idea of marrying locally because of the smaller carbon footprint.

The PEW Research Center for Panty-Twisting (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know, make "it"

I LOVE MY WIFE
-- Mr. Que (pelagi...), February 14th, 2007. (Party with me Punker) (later)

ME TOO!

rofflicious.

i very rarely talk about my husband because, like mark's wife, he prefers to be... not known on the net, i guess.

nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:03 (seventeen years ago) link

If I were a real hippie, I could knit mine own wife or something.

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Let's see - VDay sends me into a spiralling cycle of unfocussed jealous rage and suicidal depression so....

neither classic or dud. About average.

a bulldog fed a cookie shaped like a kitten (austin), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Our wuv is so strong we do not need Valentine's Day.

Ha ha, you hate me now.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

It's funny, though. Couples like Mr. and Mrs. Monkey make me go all "awwww, there is hope in the world, coz they are such a lovely couple" while people who shout about how awesome their partner/their valentine's day activities are going to be all over the internet provoke the ARGH ARGH SMUG MARRIEDS KILL KILL reaction.

Maybe I will steal my bandmate's wife while she is in India!

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah, you're nice, thanks.

In fairness, Valentine's Day is a lot worse than it used to be. I blame them over there. Who buys cards for people in their office on V-Day? If it's for anything, it's for confessing a secret crush.

I gave a boy in my class in school a V-Day card once, with no name on it, and later that afternoon I saw another girl in our class reading it. Cured me of that crush, I can tell you.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:12 (seventeen years ago) link

You'll never guess what's happening here at work! Someone came round with a single red rose for all the ladeez (yes, including Beryl). Now a bloke from upstairs is trawling round the building asking them if they want theirs because he forgot to buy any for his g/f.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha that is outrageous. Did they all scorn him?

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I would have loved to hear Beryl's reaction.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:29 (seventeen years ago) link

x-post

Yep - he was sent packing. My colleague Esther suggested : 'do what all the other losers do - buy them from a Polish guy at the traffic lights'.

I think Beryl's gone for the day, which suggests HOT DATE, does it not?

Dr.C (Dr.C), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:32 (seventeen years ago) link

ARGH ARGH SMUG MARRIEDS KILL KILL

unless you are Bridget Jones or Roisin Ingle there is no call to be using phrases like "smug marrieds".

The Real Dirty Vicar (The Real Dirty Vicar), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

When people behave in stereotypical ways, they will get stereotypical phrases attached to them!

Not all people who are married are SMUG MARRIEDS. Not all people who are SMUG MARRIEDS are even married. It's just a thing.

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago) link

a fairly silly thing IMO.

Who's shouting about it anyway, Kate? A few people have referred fairly in a self-mocking way about their efforts to mark the day. That's all.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Kate referred to the possibility of SmugM's being on t'other thread.

I don't think they are even there anyway, much less Kate accusing anybody of being so.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, I'm talking about the other thread.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:16 (seventeen years ago) link

(I have not read the other thread. I hate VD, why would I want to read a thread about it? Occasionally something pops up in blog view, that's mine only exposure. I am kinda kidding about the shouting, but I'm entitled to be bitter, ha ha ;-) )

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:18 (seventeen years ago) link

i fucking love VD

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:19 (seventeen years ago) link

ILX is full of awesome, happy couples who deserve each other. Blissfully smug-free, in fact. AND I AM PLENTY BITTER, DON'T THINK I'M NOT. But happy Valentine's to the happily partnered among us.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:20 (seventeen years ago) link

I hate it. I always have. Even when I've been in relationships on VD, I always find it embarrassing and cringeworthy. Last year, I was IN a relationship at the time, and just found it awkward. I think I ended up booking a gig on VD itself so not to have to deal with the "how are we going to celebrate VD" thing.

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:21 (seventeen years ago) link

We're going out for VD tomorrow night.

Better choice of places available, I reckons.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:22 (seventeen years ago) link

oh wait. i hate valentine's day. but i love venerial disease. that's the VD i thought we were talking about.

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:24 (seventeen years ago) link

x-post

You say to other person "I'm not sure about this VD thing, how shall we celebrate it? Or shall we not? What do you think, other person?"

That's worked for me.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I have never NOT been in a "relationship" (take as you will) on Valentine's Day for the past 8 years. And every time, it's basically lame! The best one was the year we went out with another couple and got incredibly drunk on sangria and gorged on tapas in NYC. It's always stupid, I don't want to get a load of chocolates what with being pre-diabetic and all, flowers are pretty and fun to put into interesting vases but they die and seem wasteful (also--it's really only fun to get flowers unexpectedly, like from the homeless man wandering around selling them at 3am. Getting them for a holiday or birthday is completely "Oh well I reckon you forgot about the little lady, eh"), and really, unless you are specifically going to my AP wishlist and buying my goddamned size in what I actually want, plz to not give me lingerie. PLUS IT IS ALWAYS COLD ON VALENTINE'S DAY. I would really rather just go out to a nice dinner and basically do fuck all, play a video game or listen to some music or something. It's a dumb holiday, though I do find valentine's day cards very hilarious.

xpost lol @ VD

Allyzay heard you got beat up in a club. (Allyzay Eisenschefter), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

It was too early in that relationship to have that conversation, really.

In other relationships, I've made it perfectly clear that I freaking HATE VD, and I would MURDER them if they made a big deal of it. P ignored that, and made a huge fuss over it, ugh ugh ugh. J forgot it was even happening because he was doing some art exhibition, IIRC, and that was fine with me.

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I love the idea of Valentine's Day, but I'm not super fussed about celebrating it with hearts and flowers - if it happens, great, if not, no biggie. He knows I love him, I know he loves me. We're good.

luna (luna), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:39 (seventeen years ago) link

what luna said.

though we had dinner last night (standard tex-mex, nothing fancy) tonight I'll be knitting and watching crap tv (lost, idol, bam's unholy union reruns) while he preps the kitchen walls for my painting (ugh). So romantic!
