If people contact you via your profile on a dating-related website, does that mean they have a romantic interest in you?

This particular site isn't exclusively about dating, but you can mark yourself as "available" on your profile, plus they have a similar match percentage thing as OKCupid has. Could there be another reason why some random girls would message you? Maybe they're just looking for friends?

I'm so bad at understanding Internet conventions...

if she includes a gif of her bouncing boobies, then i would think so.

;-)

WHY NOT ASK THEM?

resumo impetus (blueski), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 12:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Not necessarily. I have started some good conversations based on things in people's profiles, with nary a romantic interest.

(which site btw?)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 12:53 (seventeen years ago) link

what was the message? i would wager that if they have only seen a profile on the internet and have never interacted with you, any romantic interest will be somewhat tentative.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 12:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Obviously, but I'm just wondering what's their intention? If we'd exchanged some emails, should I ask them out at some point, or are they just looking for someone to chat with online?

Why don't you talk to them a bit and find out? x-post

How bloody weird - I deleted my OKC account twice, but a friend's bf (who she met on OKC) told me that I'm one of his highest matches (err...) and the thing STILL HASN'T BEEN DELETED!!! And there's all these messages in there. ARgh.

I find it a bit embarassing to ask someone "Are you interested in me?". If some random girl approaches me in a pub, at least in most of those cases I know what it's about.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 13:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Tuomas, i don't mean to sound curt here, but if a girl talks to you at a bar, do you worry because there's no-one to ask what her intentions may be? just imagine that instead of being on a dating site you are in a bar, and this girl has come up to you and said 'hi'.

resumo impetus (blueski), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 13:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I guess that was an x-post. Anyway, my point was exactly that I know how these things work in a pub, but not online.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 13:33 (seventeen years ago) link

like i say, just act as if you're in a pub situation.

resumo impetus (blueski), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 13:34 (seventeen years ago) link

you spilled my fucking pint.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 13:35 (seventeen years ago) link

This would be good advice for a lot of internet situations. (Including ILX, sometimes, I think.)

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 13:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I couldn't afford to buy a round if it involved the whole of ILX though.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 13:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I do act on ILX as if I'm in a pub e.g. calling someone out if I think they're being a nuisance etc. I'm one of those annoying 'always in there' regulars propping up the bar in that respect.

resumo impetus (blueski), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 13:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I do think acting as if you're in a pub is good advice for ilxors. I'm definitely not comfortable enough to do that as much as I'd like (something about typing rather than talking), but I think I should aim for it. That said, I'm not generally a nasty person, so.

"HI, DO YOU LIEK ME?" or any similar line of questioning is likely to result in NO REPLY.

You shouldn't have to ask anything like that since it is implied by the context of the dating site, and any direct question asking if she likes you / is interested in you is going to come off as bizarre & premature. She probably hasn't even made her mind up about you yet! Most likely she is just initiating conversation to see if she wants to actually get to know you!

Relax. There is a flow, go with it.
