BECAUSE NED DEMANDED IT

David RER (Frank Fiore), Monday, 12 February 2007 21:49 (seventeen years ago) link

This is gonna be some Pi-meets-Se7en kind of bullshit.

Miami style.

David RER (Frank Fiore), Monday, 12 February 2007 21:50 (seventeen years ago) link

The plot sounds a bit like the godawful Stranger Than Fiction. That's three reasons not to see it, then.

Chap (chap), Monday, 12 February 2007 21:54 (seventeen years ago) link

4! 8! 15! 16! 23! 42!

a.b. (abanana), Monday, 12 February 2007 22:09 (seventeen years ago) link

When I was 19 I would be shitting myself with anticipation. Pants shat.

nklshs (nklshs), Monday, 12 February 2007 22:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Now that I'm 28 though it still tops my sneaking-beer-into-the-dollar-theater list though.

nklshs (nklshs), Monday, 12 February 2007 22:17 (seventeen years ago) link

watching the trailer for this makes me feel embarrassed.

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Monday, 12 February 2007 22:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I especially like the part where the filmmakers assume that the target audience can't do simple 3rd grade math, because adding 4 to 19 when you're chowing down on seven dollar chicken fingers is HARD.

David RER (Frank Fiore), Monday, 12 February 2007 22:33 (seventeen years ago) link

So you all are saying you'd prefer Jim Carrey in a dual role as a serial killer nerd and as a grossly obese woman vying for his affections?

looks even worse than conspiracy theory

Joel Schumacher hasn't done anything worthwhile since he designed the costumes for Woody Allen's Sleeper.

i saw the trailer for this last night. oof.

Joel Schumacher is definitely underrated. Phone Booth was a clever piece of genre film and Flawless is one of the best films ever to deal with transgenderism. If only it had discarded the silly crime subplot, it would've been, er, flawless.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 07:45 (seventeen years ago) link

other Joel films:

D.C. Cab
St. Elmo's Fire
Dying Young
Batman Forever
Batman and Robin
8MM
The Phantom of the Opera...

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

And I care about neither of these persons, but taking the number 23 in vain is just not done. OK, it could be worse, it could be 22. But this is just a step too far for lamer Illuminati conspiracy wannabees.

Since ILE so often loves genre directors who manage to put some life into non-personal projects, I wonder why Schumacher is so universally hated. Even Batman Forever had some great moments, it seems that people who hate it are the ones who think Batman should always be gloomy and gothic. (Then again, the sixties movie gets a lot love here too.)

Batman Forever is really kind of awesome.

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 12:08 (seventeen years ago) link

The Lost Boys is still a fantastic film. Also, I loved the over the topness of the Phantom of the Opera.

But I know that I am film deaf, and not entitled to have opinions in these weighty matters. ;-P

nklshs (nklshs), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 14:24 (seventeen years ago) link

(Consequently I had no idea Joel Schumacher - a filmmaker I almost DESPISE - was behind The Lost Boys...this changes EVERYTHING!)

(Not really.)

a.b. (abanana), Saturday, 17 February 2007 11:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm actually kinda impressed that Jim Carrey is doing this. Every comedian wants to do the Tom Hanks comedy-comedy-comedy-OSCARNOM thing, but he's actually going for a trashy thriller! Tom Hanks didn't do that, unless you want to count The Da Vinci Code.

Also I love Virginia Madsen.

My friends and I went to a matinee of Batman & Robin aged 18 and stoned out of our boxes, and came out of the cinema having decided that it was the funniest film ever made. I've not watched it since, I imagine it would be a huge let down when sober.

Will Schumacher ever have a Verhoven-style critical reapraisal, I wonder (not that he neccessarily deserves one).

Chap (chap), Saturday, 17 February 2007 17:29 (seventeen years ago) link

8mm is one of the funniest films ever made, batman forever is decent, batman & robin is unwatchable on any level

and what (ooo), Saturday, 17 February 2007 17:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Verhoven-style critical reappraisal

Was there a time when people didn't see him as a crazy old coot with arty aspirations and a fascism fixation?

Srsly, speaking from ignorance here.

Yeah, why are we having a thread about Joel Shitwhatever instead of having a VIRGINIA MADSEN TOTALLY HOT YAY BOOBIES thread

"(In) every interview I read, somebody was asking her about her weight and, 'Do you throw up in the bathroom?' I mean, no one asks teenage boys, 'Do you have pubic hair yet? What size are your balls?' Whereas they'll ask a teenage girl, 'Are you still a virgin?'"

TOMB07 (trm), Saturday, 17 February 2007 18:08 (seventeen years ago) link

How come no one has mentioned Hurley from Lost yet?
