this is where I ask questions about my beautiful new macbook

this is my first new computer since 2000, ie my first proper modern computer! it is very exciting. anyway it's easy to use the basics but this is where i will ask about some of the details.

starting with music compression. it's set to import music from CDs with an AAC encoder (?) at 128kbps. what is best for it to be? there are a number of encoder options - i know that mp3 encoder at over 192 kbps is very good quality...also how will this affect importing songs on to an mp3 player, or burning them to cd, etc?

lexpretend (lexpretend), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

AAC is better than Mp3, I would set to AAC 192Mbps.

Ed (dali), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

rly? i'm still attached to vbr mp3s.

urghonomic (gcannon), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

haha i knew there would be disagreement. which is best to bring out bass and crisp beats?

lexpretend (lexpretend), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

also, i downloaded slsk, and it doesn't work.

lexpretend (lexpretend), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

maybe you should buy some real cd's? it's fun.

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

and what's the equivalent of the windows page up key?

lexpretend (lexpretend), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

I go for 320MBps AAC, but this may be excessive

for sslsk download ssX

Ed (dali), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

and AAC won't affect it if i try to burn CDs or at some point put music on an mp3 player?

where do i get ssX?

lexpretend (lexpretend), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

what is a macbook? it sounds repulsive.

paris hilton (nabisco), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

No, pretty much all mp3 players support AAC

google

Ed (dali), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

xpost. Paris, it's a shiny box that helps you steal music.

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

there's also applelossless

jw (ex machina), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

jw (ex machina), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

are all the versions in the downloads directory the same? i'll go for no 6...

lexpretend (lexpretend), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

what's a "box?"

paris hilton (nabisco), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

nabisco, fuck off.

lexpretend (lexpretend), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

a box is where you put things that you like.

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Monday, 12 February 2007 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

also, i downloaded slsk, and it doesn't work.

Probably worth noting that PC apps don't generally run on a Mac. If you really want to run SLSK (ssX is a lot stabler) or any other PC app, get Parallels.

But Abraham said, Jump! (goodbra), Monday, 12 February 2007 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

what's an "off," and why would i want to fuck one?

paris hilton (nabisco), Monday, 12 February 2007 23:37 (nineteen years ago)

cos it's hot, duh.

cis boom bah (cis), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

this is all wrong. You do not fuck an off. You fuck a box.

192 AAC is good enough for me.

dan selzer (dan selzer), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 05:01 (nineteen years ago)

itunesLAME V0 for me.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

if u want to make mp3s, this is good: http://blacktree.com/apps/iTunes-LAME/

What the hell is up with nabisco??

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

i've changed it to AAC, 224 kbps. might change to 320 but scared that those files might be too massive.

alan mentioned something about working from a new non-admin log-in - don't understand how to do this, how necessary is it from a security point of view?

lexpretend (lexpretend), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

It's not nearly as necessary on Mac OS X as it is in windows as you wil get prompted for a password when anything wants to do anything low level. I'd turn off auto-login (system Preferences/Accounts/Login Items).

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

i import music to MP3 256 or 320, tho AAC 192 is roughly the equivalent of this as i understand it. i want all my tunes in the same format so reluctant to use AAC on that basis.

new itunes update totally sucks btw. i couldn't work out how to actually look at my ipod contents as per the old version.

What the hell is up with nabisco??

Jon's fault. He hacked into Nabisco and changed him. ;-)

nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

My old boss and I did a very nerdy test where we took Mp3 (Quicktime), AAC (Quicktime), Mp3 (LAME), ALAC, FLAC and uncompressed files, for control, of the same tracks and did a comparison. ALAC was the best but the difference when you dropped to AAC 320KBps was minimal (192 wasn't much below that but there was the tiniest hint of artefacting at the very high end and we needed so very high end headphones to hear it). LAME was better than QT for MP3 and Steve's equivalent rate is about right, except in cases with very high dynamic range.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

how come? does this make anything easier? at some point i'm going to get traktor and start using that, are all the various formats compatible with it?

lexpretend (lexpretend), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

AAC is fine in traKtor, IIRC.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

how come? does this make anything easier?

no it's just me being anally retentive.

given that AAC offers equivalent/greater quality but at lesser filesize it does make sense to use it.
