Sadly, it looks unlikely that we'll be able to revive any old ILE VD threads this year.

Suicidal impulses and smug statisfaction alike can go here.

seems unlikely that anyone will take pity on me between now and wednesday

We won't be dining out at any over-priced fancy-schmancy restaurant on Wednesday night, but will be staying home to eat. I am cooking a starter of flaked confit of duck breast sandwiched between lacy potato galettes on a bed of rocket, followed by citrus marinated fillets of monkfish served with a lemon dressing and cinnamon/almond rice, with a baked cheesecake to finish. The cheesecake was supposed to be a Tia Maria concoction but when I started cooking it yesterday I realised I didn't have any Tia Maria so I sloshed some Kahlua in there instead.

I haf made him a card, and bought him a red-painted terramundi savings pot which has a gold heart on it, and tickets to see Spamalot.

I'll be watching Rangers v Hapoel Tel Aviv on the telly. No idea what he'll be doing. We might go out for a meal on Thursday instead, when restaurant prices go back to normal.

I just googled "valentine's day ideas" and found the following list which is making me laugh quite considerably:

1. Leave a small note saying "I LOVE YOU" beside her pillow to make her day begin with some romance in the air.

2. Don't go to office and spend it with your spouse.

3. Prepare Valentine cake in the shape of HEART.

4. Take her out for a long romantic drive.

5. Send bouquet of Roses with a love note.

6. Leave a small gift hidden in some corner of home with clues to its where about.

7. Don't buy a card, rather make it yourself (& it works).

8. Go Dancing together.

9. Buy a nice set of lingerie/briefs.

10. Write a sincere, wonderful love letter.

11. Give her/him a nice sensuous message.

12. Kiss and Hug your spouse often.

13. Decorate the house especially for your spouse on Valentine's Day.

14. Propose your spouse again.

15. Arrange a special Valentine's dinner for your parents (at least an hours drive from home) and arrange a Valentine bash, for your sweetheart at your house.

16. Play chess

17. List down twenty-five things that you like about your sweetheart and fifty things that you don't like. (Count yourself lucky if the second list does not exceed ten, but kick yourself in the @#$$ if you manage to list fifty)

18. Confess…

19. Sketch something for your sweetie pie.

20. Cook a special dish (If it's your first attempt, keep those antacids handy).

21. Just take time out to express your feelings, thoughts, fears and even fantasies to her.

22. Prank: Give your valentine the keys of your new car and then tell her that it's the only the keys you can afford now.

23. Take a long walk holding each other's hands.

24. Brush or comb her/his hair

25. Let her sleep while you watch over the children

26. Read out romantic/erotic poetry to your Valentine

27. Start saving for a special holiday fund for the two of you

28. Make New Year resolutions together (though it's kinda late for that) and try to follow them.

29. Exchange a list containing each other's likes and dislikes.

30. Visit a place where you've always wanted to go, but never got the chance.

31. Just lie on the beach and star gaze.

32. Go bungee jumping.

33. You may try visiting an orphanage and talking to the kids.

34. Have video game competitions at the arcades

35. And finally, whatever you do, just let your hair and your defenses down, and enjoy each other's company.

C J (C J), Monday, 12 February 2007 14:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm rather keen on number 13, myself. The whole house doesn't need decorating but the hall, stairs and landing could do with another coat of emulsion.

C J (C J), Monday, 12 February 2007 14:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Decorating the walls up the stairs isn't easy though, so perhaps we could combine it with number 32.

C J (C J), Monday, 12 February 2007 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

23: both hands?

StanM (StanM), Monday, 12 February 2007 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

14. Propose your spouse again.

Haha, if I did this, he'd think I was a menk. Possibly even more that if I suggested visiting an orphanage and talking to the kids.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Monday, 12 February 2007 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

30. Visit a place where you've always wanted to go, but never got the chance.

Just you. Not both of you.

C J (C J), Monday, 12 February 2007 14:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I doubt we'll be going out as rest. are packed. last night G. was asking what I wanted. I told him this is not like a birthday and gifts should be just a thoughtful expression of your love. His reply, "oh like carmats?" he knows one of his presents. :( I'm afraid his other present, a handmade stuffed adult swim robot giving the finger, won't be viewed as romantic either. But both are thoughtful and things I think he would enjoy. sigh.

For the record I requested he take me to Dreamgirls.

I am taking my beloved to a performance of happy hardcore tunes played on a church organ. I would be doing this even if today was not Valentine's Day, as I am a big bundle o' romantic love all year round.

I don't doubt the all year round bit but an organ recital of happy hardcore? Where?! I can only imagine you screaming "CAN YOU FEEL IT" at the top of your lungs whenever possible!

kv_nol (kv_nol), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:16 (seventeen years ago) link

If you went along, Kev, you would not have to imagine it.

The evening would only be complete if the Vicar was to wear a dress shirt, white tie and tails, but then take his tailcoat off to reveal that he was wearing only the starched front of the dress shirt, and could make big box little box very effectively with his dress gloves.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:19 (seventeen years ago) link

BIG BOX LITTLE BOX! Has someone been talking to Aussie David? Or is this a running "happy raver" joke that everyone but the Americans already knows?

Not a chance in hell of me going! Have a quiet night in planned.

This morning I opened the door for a flower delivery for my roommate. The guy delivering them looked kind of excited to be surprising someone, and may have been disappointed that the wrong person answered and the right person had already left for the lab. (They're gorgeous flowers, though, big lilies. Her boyfriend has good taste.)

Supermarket Shop, no. David taught us the following:

1. Big box/little box
2. Catching tiny bubbles
3. Doing the ironing
4. Doing the hoovering
5. Mowing the lawn
6. Eating a banana/eating two bananas

...to be combined at will. Hmm, I forget any others.

On St. Valentine's Day in 1349, roughly 2,000 Jews were burned to death by Christian mobs in Strausbourg. These mobs, led by nobles who owed large sums to Jewish moneylenders (usury being a sin for Christians), blamed the Jews for poisoning the city's wells and causing the bubonic plague.[9]
