I thought it was great, but the main character was miscast. Why terrible?

Every time I think about going to see it I find another use for the $15. Eastwood's record since A Perfect World has been so weak, I can't get excited about anything he does. Million $$$$$ Baby was the last straw.

I didn't see Million, but I doubt it has much in common with Letters.

It's a generic war movie, mostly. (some terrible touches from Paul Haggis, ie when we find out the pro soldier is a good guy cuz he won't shoot a dog)

I was not esp impressed with the drained-color look either.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Dr. Morb, exactly. the thing was so generic. every war movie ever used with absolutely no variance, and nothing of interest. furthermore, it was LONG, pushed on and on with the same boring, expected crap. pretty much every scene and turn in plot was absolutely predictable. the ONLY thing that made it interesting was that it was from the perspective of the Japanese. but wow, that wasn't enough to hold the movie up at all. watching it just felt like I was watching a foreign film. I completely forgot that whole idea that made it "WOW OMG REVOLUTIONARY MOVIE"

every war movie cliche ever used...

I didn't find it to be as cliche loaded as I was expecting. I thought the perspective it took was interesting but overall was a so-so movie.

I enjoyed it as a movie and thought the feeling of impending doom made the first half riveting. It dealt with a lot of cultural issues with surprising nuance (which may have little to do with Eastwood's direction). But more than anything else, this is a very significant film in terms of WWII remembrance, especially from the Japanese perspective.
