i was in a band in high school with a guy who owned not one shirt that didn't say something like "fuckingroovin" or "farfrompukin" or "freakinshroomin" in the VW "fahrfergnugen" font. this is no exaggeration, it is FACT.

nklshs (nklshs), Friday, 1 September 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I had a question about Girbaud. I googled it, and it seems to be a pretty haute-couture French designer that's been around since 1938. But circa 1992 or so, I remember seeing the name on lots of t-shirts and jeans and stuff, ESPECIALLY among the African-American kids I went to school with. What happened to the brand? Was it generally popular among African-Americans, or just the ones in suburban Chicago?

i had green girbaud jeans in 1991

jhoshea (jhoshea), Friday, 1 September 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

sometime around late '97 early '98 VH1 was showing the best of American Bandstand in some sorta marathon and i was able to record a few. Wham! was making (i think) their stateside debut on the show. dick says "it sounds like a record out of detroit!" they performed "death by matrimony" and george and andrew sported matching, tight-rolled to the calf Girbauds. (tag on the front pocket's a dead giveaway.) and that was maybe '81. it was awesome.

TS: hobie v. Op v. quicksilver v. catchit

atm (atm), Friday, 1 September 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

catchit might have had the edge when they launched the t-shirt with tails concept. also, my high school banned them because the administration was convinced "catchit" was a clever play on "cat shit." ! the fact that it was very obviously a "surf lifestyle" kinda brand didn't occur to them.
