The above scots/irish unionist culture is ignored outside of the uk, ignored in england itself. not something deemed of cultural 'worth', not something brought up in polite conversation (much like thatcher herself now)

--^, because it is associated with a very conservative and strict brand of Protestant Christianity which bans everything and also associated with William of Orange and the plantation of Protestant Scots in Northern Ireland, a practice we would condemn as abhorrent if done by other ppl in other places and a period of history we are embarrassed by not least coz, while it certainly wasn't totally responsible for the Troubles, certainly exacerbated them. It is a shame that the Pinefox doesn't seem to post on the Sandbox as he is far more familiar with Irish politics and history than me and would be able to give you a fuller more lucid answer.
