These folks will sell you a decent version of Nero for under $5, which should allow you to author DVDs from source vids very easily.

you need a program called WinAVI to convert and Nero to burn. it works like magic.

I can also vouch for AVI2DVD. Very simple front end to some free utilities, no hassles. (I've only had a couple of issues with weird sources before, although nothing I didn't expect to be honest.)
