Comics and music.

Yesterday, I read the reprint of the Alice Cooper comic Neil Gaiman and Michael Zulli did in the 90's, and it was kinda meh (nice art though). So, I was wondering, since these two art forms are rather far away from each other, has there ever been a successful marriage of the two? I know there's some good comics-influenced music, but what about the other way around? The only good example I can think of is the Corto Maltese book "Tango" set in Argentina, which (or at least one edition of it) came with a CD of old-school Argentinian tangos.

What was the name of that thing that Justin Green did in Tower Record's magazine for a few years? That one to thread, too. Lynda Barry's done some killer stuff, too.

There was that ::shudder:: Belle and Sebastian graphic illustration of the lyrics thing. It was actually... quite good. The artwork, at least. As a collection, it was very interesting.

(Used to do this a million years ago, with an old band, but have got out of the habit. Except for that Elephants thing I did a few years back.)

Not that this would be good, but I remember hearing about a comic that Kid Koala did that came with a record meant as a soundtrack (or vice versa).

Didn't Kraftwerk do a comic with one of their early albums?

Jordan's answer reminds me of all those p-funk album covers filled with the Sergio Aragonesesque scrawlings of Pedro Bell, too.

2000AD had a shortlived Comic Rock thing going, with two stories - Killer Watt and Going Underground. Both bore essentially no relation to the songs notionally linked to, but they did start the whole Nemesis thing going.

2000AD once did a Sisters of Mercy strip - c.1988 iirc (Floodland era Sisters).

There was a comic in the liner notes to the album. It was very cool.

That reminds me, Happy Apple had a wordless comic as the liner notes to Youth Oriented, done by some French guy.

Prince's comic on the aborted DC Piranha imprint is something pretty special. Don't forget Alan Moore's Sinister Ducks flexidisc! And the 70's pseudo emo spiderman album.

i have that (three parts?). dave mckean also did one for the rolling stones which i always associate with the alice cooper thing, somehow.

i also have, somewhere, a 7" single with a cover done by ted mckeever and that Fauves 7" featuring grant morrisson. (oh, and the warren ellis is in nick cave's new band, which i think's a bit strange)

Terry Laban's daily strip "Edge City" is about a middle class couple with kids, but the dad is an aging punk type who's hobby is playing in a band. Some of the storylines in that vein are pretty good.

Isn't League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen Volume 3 supposed to come with an album of songs performed by Alan Moore?

Didn't Jamie Hewlett (he of Tank Girl and Gorillaz) do a comic to go with Pulp's 'Common People' - it used to be all over the net. And Fila Brazillia's 'Powerclowns' CD booklet is entirely made up of wordless mini-comics with tiny eye-hurting frames, but I remember them as rather nifty.

Negative effects of middle school comics habit:
1. Learned to draw bad anatomy with thick black outlines on everything
2. Friends loled at me every time a marvel or dc comic was spotted in my backpack or locker
3. Bought several ska cds based on Evan Dorkin letter pages

I just wasted twenty minutes trying to find scans of that Prince Rogers Nelson Piranha book. If I had a scanner I'd just put my copy up. Anybody able to unearth this gem?

Dunno but he did loads of art for the Senseless Things.

Alan Moore's Sinister Ducks was a proper 7" not a flexi.
