Are there any slippers that a young man can wear with style?

Or even ... allure?

Hell, no.

Well, that it is disappointing.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 12:27 (seventeen years ago) link

i think it's about how you wear them, more than the slippers qua slippers.

What about khaki espadrilles?

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 13:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Those espadrilles are a bit fancy smancy if you ask me.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 13:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, they look like Vans.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 13:31 (seventeen years ago) link

From what I understand, real espadrilles are just canvas hastily glued to old rope.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 13:32 (seventeen years ago) link

sewn onto old rope, and very comfortable they are too. A better pair of shoes for 5 euros can not be had.

Crocs.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 14:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I think you must be comfortable with your own old man style.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 14:50 (seventeen years ago) link

crocs are horrible bits of plastic. not comfy! also not very alluring?

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 14:52 (seventeen years ago) link

they are so supremely comfortable that I could give a shit if they are alluring.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Toooooootally comfy. Lack of allure accusation hits the mark, tho.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyway, I think gents should either wear the very bottom of the "don't give a shit" scale like cheapo Chinatown slip-ons (HI DERE BRYCE) or else have a decided preference in some particular style/brand for their own reasons and be willing to embrace the old-man style, as Miz Mis said.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 14:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Big puffy synthetic fleece things with sock tops are not approved, I think is what I'm trying to say. Either take 1) simplest and cheapest possible while still being made of natural, breatheable, biodegradeable materials, or b) pick your luxury and run with it.

Of course, Crocs fulfill neither category but they're kind of house & errand shoes.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 15:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I've taken to wearing Birkenstocks with woolly socks around the house. But I am not a young man.

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 15:41 (seventeen years ago) link

What's wrong with shoes indoors? I mean, you don't wear slippers in the office or in the pub, do you?

(Actually I think Tim knows someone who DOES wear slippers in the office, but I may be wrong here)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 15:45 (seventeen years ago) link

There are a whole bunch of people who are (almost) unspeakably horrified at the prospect of tracking dirt and germs from the outdoors to the in-. I'm with them as far as having to re-wash floors and re-varnish the wood is concerned, or trying to un-stain the carpets or similar; those things take good time and/or money to fix. But for "germs" alone? No. Just me.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 15:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I think socks are just fine for walking aaround inside, thank you very much. Slippers are a fascist plot to get people to spend money frivolously.

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 15:56 (seventeen years ago) link

OTM.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 15:57 (seventeen years ago) link

What about going out to get the paper/mail/cigarettes? One could put one's regular shoes on but that's such a tedious, repetitive task! And do you have stairs in yr house, Dan?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 15:58 (seventeen years ago) link

shoes = dirty
socks = feet still cold
slippers = feet cosy and warm :D

lexpretend (lexpretend), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 15:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, if you're concerned about how sexy your slippers are, you shouldn't be having sex. SO SEZ DAN.

What about going out to get the paper/mail/cigarettes? One could put one's regular shoes on but that's such a tedious, repetitive task! And do you have stairs in yr house, Dan?

If you're going outside, you put on shoes! It's not that hard!

My place doesn't have stairs but my parents' place and my in-laws do; I've managed both without slippers just fine.

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 15:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, maybe I have unnaturally warm feet but what kind of sad, tissue-paper sex are you wearing, Lex?

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 16:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I could pretend to take some amusing, lofty stance on this but quite practically speaking, socks are neither warm enough, nor sturdy enough, nor non-slip enough in my family home, which is old and drafty and has all wood floors & stairs, and where the dog occasionally spills his water on the kitchen floor and socks pick up an alarming amount of cat hair. In a clean, moderately sized apartment? Probably totally do-able!

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 16:02 (seventeen years ago) link

i love slippers.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 16:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Tissue paper sex leads to cold feet, I think that should be obvious.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 16:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I find if I only wear socks on my feet, I catch my little toes on doors and table legs and it hurts like bejimminy!

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 16:11 (seventeen years ago) link

lex is otm.

shoes are not always so comfy! depending on the shoes of course -- but lex and i wear 8-hole cherry-red DMs, which aren't great for a night on the sofa.

HI DERE BRYCE

Ha: Just last week Bryce stopped on Park Avenue right in front of my workplace to shift some things around in his bag and check his hair in the front window, and I had to mentally confirm that it was him by checking that he was wearing Chinatown slippers. But he finished adjusting and moved along before I could say hi.

Unsexy slippers are the sexiest thing of all—to be able to wear something so incredibly dowdy and still drive my husband wild with desire. Like handicapping a racehorse, fleece-lined scuffs advertise my volcanic baseline hottness.

The same applies to my general slovenliness, feral-slut hair, disinclination to change my clothes, wear makeup or give a shit in any way.

I love slippers so much I have regularly got in the car and only realised later that I still had them on. I've set off for holidays twice with them on. I would happily wear them to work but The Man says I can't.

Slippers are fucking awful. Sloppy, usually ugly, and they just bring down the quality of any outfit, no matter how nice the rest of it is. Crocs especially make me want to start hacking off feet left and right.

It still amazes me how my mother and her friends are shocked by women over the age of 16 who don't dye their hair, wear makeup, or generally try unnatural means to "look their best". I told my mother that when blokes started wearing makeup, I might too.

As for slippers for blokes, I like these Hermes ones:

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 10:41 (seventeen years ago) link

The Bloke doesn't wear slippers, but instead has a pair of brown leather flip flops (possibly Timberland ones, but I am not sure) which he wears around the house. He often complains that his feet are cold though.

My ex boyfriend used to wear slippers like these, but brown:

http://dts.ystoretools.com/1002/images/250x1000/woslforki.jpg

(I thoroughly approve of slippers, BTW. I have LL Bean sleep shippers. They are toasty comfy, I'd wear them all the time, even outside, if they had better soles. They're kind of rubber, so I can just about put out the rubbish in them, but wouldn't wear them properly walking.)

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 12:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I have very steep stairs in my house, and the stair treads are particularly narrow, making them incompatible with the wearing of most slippers esp big novelty ones such as those which Kate has posted as, while they look really cool, they'd be too dangerous. I could see myself going base-over-apex all the way down the stairs if I tripped while wearing those.

Narrow steep stairs + big slippers + my general state of sleepyheaded clumsiness = a broken neck for sure

C J (C J), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 12:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't wear big novelty slippers! That was my ex!

I wear ones like these (lower left hand corner) now. Very comfy. And with rubber soles for going down stairs. (And if you feel like going climbing about on television transmitters.)
