College Bowl Games 06/07

I haven't paid any attention to college football this year -- tell me what's interesting and worth caring about this year in the bowls.

I just turned on the tv and happened across the Cotton Bowl starting. Impression #1, Pat Summerall looks like a corpse (no surprise). #2, odd sight of Nebraska players all holding hands coming out of the tunnel.

Yeah, but the weather is great while the rest of you people freeze = WE WIN.

Sorry Ned, I just went to the grocery store in shirtsleeves, NYAH NYAH NYAH, never mind that the store is across the street and it's 42 degrees out right now.

Do go on.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 January 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago) link

HAHAHA they just used Teddybears/Iggy Pop's "Punkrocker" for a cadillac advert. That was quick.

Sorry for jinxing you, Boise State. :(

Ned, it is well into the 50s where I am. You forgot about global warming.

HOLY FUCKING FUCK

The PEW Research Center for Panty-Twisting (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 05:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Meaning proper temperatures at last for winter! (Yeah, climate change and death, but I'm selfish.)

Um, x-post?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 05:34 (seventeen years ago) link

best response ever to mild weather.

This game is BANANAS. Boise St. tied it back up with 10 seconds left and it's going to overtime.

The PEW Research Center for Panty-Twisting (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 05:39 (seventeen years ago) link

That was one of the best bowl games I've ever seen.

Starke (Starke), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 05:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Seriously. I can't believe the last half hour or so.

The PEW Research Center for Panty-Twisting (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 05:53 (seventeen years ago) link

My response to that 2-point conversion: "BUH."

To think I turned it off after the OU interception TD. Good thing my brother hollered at me to turn this on.

buns of steel magnolias (m bison), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 05:56 (seventeen years ago) link

That was completely nuts.

schwantz (schwantz), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 05:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Ian Johnson proposing to the head cheerleader just made it even nutser.

OK This is the first football game I have ever watched. Good God! The last play (according to my friend) was a "statue of liberty" play?
I really didn't know that much about the game, but I liked their orange pants. Plus, they (Boise) are much smaller than the Oklahoma thugs. I like underdogs.
My friend kept saying "it's over." and I kept saying "No, wait!"
I am now concerned that my expectations for watching football are set pretty high.
That was an unbelievable game.
I was screaming at the television!
Boise is the little team that could!
I think I understand why people watch sports, now.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 06:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Calling it the tortilla bowl and asking about yard kicks? Not so good. But now I understand.
What's the next bowl to fall into? Who should I root for?

aimurchie (aimurchie), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 06:46 (seventeen years ago) link

The Orange Bowl tomorrow, Louisville vs. Wake Forest. They're both underdogs, but Wake Forest is probably more of an underdog.

Then the Sugar Bowl, where you root against Notre Dame.

Starke (Starke), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 06:50 (seventeen years ago) link

we are

penn state!

whooo!

(ok it was a pretty lame game -- especially compared to boise st. -- but i'm always happy to see joe pa win one.)

tipsy mothra (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 06:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks! So I root for Wake Forest, just because, and then I root against Notre Dame. Sounds good.

Gator Bowl disappointing for me as a Tech fan, but things are looking good for our new QB (lol @ Reggie Ball's academic ineligibility)

step hen faps (Curt1s Stephens), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 08:23 (seventeen years ago) link

my friend, who watched 10 hours of football yesterday, and is from Wisconsin (therefore a rabid football fan), could not explain the rules of overtime in college football.
There's a lot I didn't understand, but the overtime rules were very confusing.
Can anyone explain, please?

aimurchie (aimurchie), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 18:47 (seventeen years ago) link

GT in being better off w/o reggie ball shocker!

aidsy (aidsy), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

College football overtime rules aren't too complicated actually. Each team gets a chance to score starting at the 25 yard line. There's no clock to worry about. Same rules with downs (4 chances to get at least 10 yards).

If the teams are still tied after the first overtime (they both score touchdowns, they both score field goals, or they both fail to score) then it goes into another overtime.

If it reaches the 3rd overtime, the teams have to go for 2-point conversions after the touchdowns, instead of kicking extra points. This guarantees that somebody'll mess up sooner.

The rules are silly and don't really assure that the better team won, but I guess you could say that about most overtime rules.

Starke (Starke), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 19:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks. I'm still confused, but that's because I don't know anything about football. Yet.

for a sec I thought this was going to be about trivia competitions

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 20:58 (seventeen years ago) link

The BSU was insane but I feel nothing but hate for my old alma mater (sp?) pumping all its $$$ into the Taco Bell Arena and the Micron Computer dept. and other brand name co-opted divisions. Also, Boise is fucking fucking insane about its team BUT because they think it's the good ole boys doing some October Sky thing and making their way out of Tuttle farms by pigskin skills. When they're all imports who used to cheat of my biology labs. grr.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 23:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Evryone's happy about it but grumpy old me. :(

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Abbott with the smackdown! Go get rich and take over the place and fire everyone and make them cry.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 23:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I have a red list right now. Starting w/the lit dept. head who I believe may have seen a John Grisham movie adaptation once and is therefore qualified...to get rid of the linguistics dept. :(

Abbott (Abbott), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 00:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I crashed about midnight with a couple of minutes to go in the 3rd quarter of the Boise St/Ok game and missed the real excitement. I swear freaking halftime show of the Fiesta Bowl lasted 90 minutes.

earlnash (earlnash), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 02:42 (seventeen years ago) link

this game is ugly as fuck.

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 02:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Muhammad Ali and Arnold Palmer were the special coin-toss guests for those not paying attention

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 02:51 (seventeen years ago) link

i never pay attention to pre-game, halftime, or post-game, dude.

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 02:57 (seventeen years ago) link

louisville does not deserve to win this game.

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 04:06 (seventeen years ago) link

How so? I don't like em, but the game seems pretty even. 2 lost fumbles, 1 missed field goal, similar offensive stats.

Starke (Starke), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 04:10 (seventeen years ago) link

an acc team is creaming them, is why.

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 04:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe not anymore.

Starke (Starke), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 04:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Seeing Ali was nice, just to know that he's still out there.

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 05:05 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah you wouldn't hear about it if he died or anything.

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 05:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Notre Dame is such a joke.

Starke (Starke), Thursday, 4 January 2007 04:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Those are good overtime rules.

What is a statue of liberty play?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 4 January 2007 13:33 (seventeen years ago) link

well, thanks ND, I lost a bottle of wine because of you

The Statue of Liberty I think involves a QB or a RB pretending to pass but handing off behind his back instead.

The Statue of Liberty play was a staple of football games in Warner Bros Looney Tunes cartoons. In these cartoons, the main character would quickly dress up as the Statue of Liberty, then majestically walk the ball to the end zone for a touchdown.
