my brother & i want to go away in late february to get away from hell-cold canada. we have decided that we want to go to a beach somewhere. preferably on an island. preferably in the caribbean. preferably somewhere where it will be warm that time of year.

thing is i have NO idea how to go about figuring WHERE exactly to go. i'm used to comparison-shopping for everything but i have no idea where to start on this one. any suggestions--useful websites, personal experience, recommendations etc--totally appreciated.

thx dudes

my latest obsession is an ad on the back cover of food and wine for the puerto rican islands of vieques and culebra... the ad is a BEAUTIFUL plate of whole lobster and lovely white lobster meat and fried plantains. WANT

Just read Jamaica Kincaid's A Small Place before you decide anything.

Cuba would be an interesting place to be right now, plus good food, music and booze.

I have friends in Cuba at the moment... I'll ask them how they found the place if they return.

i always wanted to go to martinique. not really sure why, but it looks gorgeous. the subway's covered with 'bahamavention' ads lately, but i feel like bahamas are too cliché? i've never been anywhere remotely tropical though, so i can't say.

Lamu is one of the best places I've ever been to, I spent xmas and NYE there two years ago, and the water was like a bath. Possibly a little too far for you guys to go, though:

I went to the Bahamas once on a family trip (the moms retired and was celebratin' by drinking one too many pina coladas). Make sure you're not at a place with Spring Breakers. Late February should put you in the clear, but just make sure. A vacation isn't quite a vacation when tons of high school students from Westchester are throwing up in the pool.

yeah, i want to make sure there's room for me to throw up in the pool.

A few years back (pre-9/11) when I had no passport (US) but needed to get far far away, I went to American Samoa. Aside from being far far away, it has very little to recommend it.

I remember that Travis McGee Novel where he goes to Pago Pago and says "wow, this sucks."

Cuba is great, and the price is "ok".

I went to Haiti once, whoa, it was fucked up.

So, don't go there.

Woah, hang on, explain spring breakers to us Britishes please. We are planning Florida at the end of February - is there some sort of time when the world is taken over by puking teenagers?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Spring break is the time between winter and spring university terms in the US, late March/early April in essence. Late February shouldn't be a problem, but Alfred Soto or other Miami-based folk would be the ones to ask.

But it is cold.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Not going to Miami, going to the other side (Bradenton, to be precise). I could ask my brother who lives there, but I don't think they go out much and they probably wouldn't notice.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, yes indeed! Easter is the time for high school kids to go on spring break and vomit in public places, as the drinking ages are lower outside of the US. University breaks vary, as they may not fall around Easter, and are not standard from school to school. The university I work at now gets two spring breaks (?) at weird times. If I hear another student say how "awesome" Miami Beach is, someone will get cold cocked in the head. However, I went to a big public university up North, and we had a week in March, not necessarily around Easter. It all depends. Spring may just be the season of the vomming teens / 20 somethings.

if you go to montana, my little brother lives in a little town outside of bozeman and his neighbor rents out a very nice house to people. not through airbnb or anything, just to family/friends of people who live in the town. my bro works at the gibson guitar factory if you want a tour, he can set one up.
