New Years Honours List

Right, I think we need a thread wherein we can all go "oh, come off it, SIR BONO?!?!?" while shaking our heads sadly at the pointlessness of the honours system.

I actually wanted to start this to roffle at Morrissey's pathetic attempt to get a gong.

Yeah, staunch republican really wants any kind of gong what-so-ever.

People turn them down all the time.

I'm amused by Morrissey calling Jamie Oliver obese. Pot calling kettle, come in kettle.

According to the Sun this morning, or yesterday morning as it now technically is, David Beckham was "hotly tipped" for a KNIGHTHOOD prior to the announcements. This *is* bollocks, right?

Well, if Kelly Holmes can become a dame I don't think that's too ridiculous (caveat: I think the very concept of the honours list is pretty ridiculous). He's arguably the most famous living Briton in the world, after all.

That rumour about Beckham being knighted has been going around for a while now. It's no more ridiculous than, say, Sir Matthew Pinsent or Sir Tom Jones.

is this like the british dean's list or something?

Having googled dean's list, I think the answer to that would be no.

The rumour about the Beckham knighthood was huge around World Cup time but two things point to So Not Gonna Happen: the abysmal performance of the 2006 team and (possibly more significant) and the likely source of the rumours being Victoria Beckham. Apparently the thought of that hoser being able to call herself Lady Beckham was too much for the steering committee.

Did you hear this too, Football Correspondent Watson?

suzy artskooldisko (suzy artskooldisko), Sunday, 31 December 2006 01:02 (seventeen years ago) link

The only people to be knighted due to what they did on the football pitch are Stanley Matthews (1965), Tom Finney (1998), and Geoff Hurst (also 1998). Then you've got Winterbottom, Ramsey, Busby, Ferguson, and Robson for achievements as managers. There's not a chance of Beckham receiving a knighthood _ever_.

Dom Passantino (DomPassantino), Sunday, 31 December 2006 01:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Not in that much detail, no. I think denying people honours on the grounds that they are married to idiots seems a bit silly, but I think the entire system is silly.

(getting to quarter-finals of World Cup is not *that* abysmal, btw)

Jock Stein wuz robbed!

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Sunday, 31 December 2006 01:11 (seventeen years ago) link

(they can give it to Beckham for services to charity though, can't they? Not necessarily as a footballer)

HI DERE!

Dom Passantino (DomPassantino), Sunday, 31 December 2006 01:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I know this is going to sound a retarded question, but... how much do you actually need to raise for charity to get a knighthood for services to it?

Dom Passantino (DomPassantino), Sunday, 31 December 2006 01:13 (seventeen years ago) link

£1 million, apparently. If the charity is The Labour Party.

Sly note in the Guardian today about the knighthood given to that Scarlett dude being the only 'political' one this year.

^also yet another add to my theory of Blairypants et al being neo-Victorian what with un/deserving poor distinctions and the ability of industrialists and financiers being able to buy a KBE.

Jock Stein wuz robbed!

Some papers were released a few years back about Stein's nomination being blocked because of him being "not the right sort" for a knighthood.

Yeah, I should maybe have mentioned that since it's not that widely-known given that no-one gives a shit about Scottish football.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Sunday, 31 December 2006 18:47 (seventeen years ago) link

haha, i read that as "it's widely known that no one gives a shit about scottish football"

sorry ;)

i read a story somewhere that there was a book in pre-production (or whatever the appropriate phrase is) that was already up on amazong called "sir david" or similar so they rang the publisher up and they said, "oh amazon, ahem, where do they get this info from, lalala, is that the time? must go"

y'know, I read it as that as well when I came back to this thread, and I wrote it!

Wow, so *Hank Marvin* declined his honour?!

A Radio Picture (Factory Sample Not For Sale), Sunday, 31 December 2006 23:43 (seventeen years ago) link

When I was working for her agent, back in the mists of time, a v. v. famous South Effrican author declined an honour. She capitulated later, so they do ask again sometimes.
