Lets see, plenty of ads for me to be annoyed about this year.

1. The Veddy Veddy Reewaarding guy from Citi.
2. All Dunkin Donuts ads, but especially the one with the mom and her kids in the car singing a horrid song about KARATEEEEEEE. The look on the womans face...i want to pour hot coffee on her.

7. the one where the SUV scares the crap out of the furry-creature focus group
8. the Lexus commercials at the US Open
Honorable Mention - the Viagra commercial where the guy tapes the game to go get it on (a. because it should be a tivo commercial, not a viagra commercial, and b. the dude looks a little too much like alec badwin)

8. Geico dramatic reenactment series (movie announcer dude, Little Richard, Charo)
9. cavemen beer commercial from the Super Bowl
Honorable Mention - "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" (yes, a little late with this, but it's hard to imagine a more perfect reinforcement of a brand)

Best Straight Man - Greg Biffle Subway ads
Most Personality - Tony Stewart Home Depot ads

I loathe all US adverts for medications. One of the joys of living in the UK is never, ever seeing these on the telly.

Actually I totally WUV the Nicole Kidman ad. I cry at weddings, too.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 17:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought glamour was more the point than romance. Apart from the fact that it's maybe a dead concept, and that I don't especially like Chanel-type luxury style, and my annoyance at their appropriation of 'clair de lune', Nicole Kidman just seems the wrong choice here.

Swiffer ads make me want to cry.

franny (frannyglass), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 03:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, any of the thousand ads that have the blundering male/smug smart female combo, usually husband and wife.

Also, fearmongering life insurance ads featuring earnest seniors, usually on TV stations from Atlanta.

Commercial for local Toyota dealership's "silent sale" this Monday & Tuesday that ran TWICE EVERY COMMERCIAL BREAK during It's A Wonderful Life on Xmas Eve, which was no more than one screen of graphic and the Pink Panther theme.

I mean, twice in ONE commercial break is bad enough, but literally TWICE EVERY COMMERCIAL BREAK, that is INSANE.

Something that occurred to me the other day -- what other cases are there of one advertiser running two completely separate allegedly-humorous ad campaigns? I'm thinking of Geico, with the cavemen and the gecko. I could see them having one serious campaign and one funny one, but having two parallel funny campaigns is kind of weird.

Insurance companies sure put a lot into elaborate ad campaigns. Progressive/Flo, Farmers/JKSimmons, etc. The best one is definitely Allstate and the guy playing Mayhem.

no idea as to the general consensus, but now that the festive season is in full swing, can i just say that the glut of high budget, slo-mo adverts for stuff that makes folk smell bearable make my blood boil.

clearly the ad people believe such things work, so i guess its just me, but i cant stand the constant moody looking gloss enhanced shyte.

(xpost : haha ! of course, didn't spot that nudge re bolan ... )

mark_e, Friday, 2 December 2011 15:30 (twelve years ago) link

Completely separate?

There was the Pot Noodle one, one a semi-serious Steve Cram fronted one at a racetrack, and one with a comedybloke and a "they are too gorgeous to be healthy" strapline. They eventually 'came together' in the end.

Ou est la showaddywaddy (MarkG oo la showaddywaddy), Friday, 2 December 2011 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, and the "still tango" one.

First up, an ad, very amateurly made, for the drink, basically a bloke shouting over a rave scene.

Next ad, the Managing Director for Tango telling the viewer that they do not make a still version, and if they see it on sale, phone a telephone number.

The third ad had the MD being spanked for being a naughty boy, or something. Except that ad was never shown, I don't think. The only reason I know this was that I saw a copy of a marketing VHS with all the ads compiled together (I didn't see the vids playing, only the contents page on the VHS box).

ok, I didn't realize the guy's last name was Orapko -- that makes the "it's another word for sack" line a lot funnier. I thought he was just making up some bullshit with his letters that he knew he'd get away with because Cavemen R Dumm.
