It's not Christmas here, yet though.

Almost. Currently at my folks place and in an hour and a half we go over to my aunt and uncle's, where my cousin George and his wife Pilar and their young son Owen will be as well. Haven't seen them in two years -- they live in NYC now -- so this will be a treat. Gifts under the tree, good food to be had and I'm feeling v. content. Carmel for Christmas is truly wonderful. :-)

Traditional Johnson Family Christmas Eve Swedish Feast:
-Pickled herring, herring in cream sauce
-Two types of Swedish cheese
-Limpa bread
-Korv sausage (this sausage is made in the garage of some dude in Westerly, RI! As such, its taste and texture varies year to year--this was a good year.)
-Swedish meatballs with lingonberry sauce
-Potato salad
-Weird cole slaw thingee
-Excessive amnt of cookies, cakes etc.

Tomorrow it is roast beef tenderloin and potatoes and some sort of sauteed or steamed green vegetable; less intriguing but perhaps more appetizing to some.

i REALLY try to be open to anything food-wise, but the world of smoked/cured/pickled fish...i just can't do it. i'm a failure. even sardines. lil' ol' sardines. i have made sooooooo many whitefish bagels and smoked salmon bagels in my time as a food service professional in philly and...i just can't do it. chubs. we used to sell smoked whole chubs at this store i worked at, ugh, yeah, everyone has their thing. it's my thing.

Stressful morning waiting while wife worked up her nerve to face people today. Went to my sister's house for Christmas dinner with her family and my parents, finally able to relax a little once we got there. My mom gave all her kids and grandkids cash -- "I could say I just didn't know what to get you all, but the truth of it is that I just don't go shopping anymore, too stressful." Which was so honest it was endearing. Came home and we opened one gift each. (I got next year's sudoku page-a-day calendar.) Now I'm so sleepy I can't see straight. Tomorrow, more presents and the traditional huge breakfast.

i'm making the pot roast tomorrow (which i've never made before so advice welcome)

Get the dutch oven/casserole pan hot on the stove top first, add a bit of oil, then brown the meat for at least 10 minutes on each side, including the edges (for as long as possible - 10 minutes standing there propping up a pot roast edgewise feels ridiculous). Then add braising liquid and simmer on low for hours.

Hi, sorry for the lacklustre start to this thread, although it seems to have found a suitable permutation in the last 7 hours - being Christmas and all, I guess. I wrote "Xmas" due to all the annoying PC signs all over town right now, and there are children out there who think that is how you actually spell Christmas, including my corruptable young self....

Even at 18, I'm never to old to go into my parents' room at 6am singing a bad rendition of "I Saw Three Ships". This may be the last time, thankfully for them.

My mother was actually considering staying up all night, as she feared the room containing all the food was not 100% cat proof. When we finally persuaded her to go to bed, she was close to tears at the thought of the cats getting in and "ruining Xmas" but as far as I can see, they didn't get in. Xmas is safe for another year :) For dinner we usually have about 20 different food items on the table and inevitably one gets left in the oven, the microwave etc. so Boxing Day is often spent eating leeks in cheese or courgettes on their own. I'll try and make sure that doesn't happen this year :S

Anyway merry Xmas ILX!!

The kids were up late last night watching the Santa make his way round the world via the NORAD site, they were getting excited/scared as he made his way across Europe.
Anyway they've been up an hour or so now all the presents are open and they're playing charades.

I'm on breakfast duty - hence taking a couple minutes out to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Let's hope it's a good one.

And merry merry to all. Lovely Carmel morning here and the presents were gone through with gusto -- we all made some fun scores and as always the feeling is the best part of all, snug and cool. Plenty of phone chat going on with relatives and others and all's well; hope everyone is having an equally good day if you celebrate.
