My wife has this superstition that on the first day of the month the first thing you say when you wake up has to be, "Rabbit rabbit." Otherwise bad things happen.

Anybody ever hear of this?

Yeah! - it was in a Trixie Belden book :) I did this for many many months when I was in grade school.

I still do it when I think of it. 'Course it's utter useless.

I thought you were supposed to say "white rabbits" ? I think I must have been getting it wrong all these years :(

And the first reply should be "Hares"

Yes, I have heard of it.

Oh and "Hello, Mr Magpie, how are you and your children" on seeing the first magpie on a month.

And not "SHUT YR CLACKING IT'S FIVE IN THE MORNING" on any given morning.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Friday, 1 September 2006 07:54 (seventeen years ago) link

First magpie seen on any morning = you have to say "good morning, your majesty" (apparently). This might be just a local Oxfordshire thing though.

Pinch punch first day of the month and no return.

Ned T., Friday, 1 September 2006 08:12 (seventeen years ago) link

As for Magpies my mother-in-law says "Good Morning (afternoon/evening) M'Lud to EVERY magpie.

A punch and a kick for being so quick, Ned!

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 1 September 2006 09:29 (seventeen years ago) link

i fawt it was white rabbits too.

ilxbountyhunter, Friday, 1 September 2006 09:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought it was supposed to be "Good morning Mr Magpie and how's the wife and family?" and you only say it if there's only one magpie (to counteract the "One for sorrow..." thing).

Accompanied by a left-handed salute, of course

xpost There you are, I was (nearly) right!

M Grout (Mark Grout), Friday, 1 September 2006 10:22 (seventeen years ago) link

(x-post)nu-onimo is correct, at least as far as I'm concerned.

My other half is from Bristol and has a whole shed load of this superstitious mumbo jumbo. Anyone else heard of not doing washing on Boxing Day because you wash a member of your family away?

Innocent_Boksen, Friday, 1 September 2006 10:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I've heard that 'bless you' after a sneeze is so a fairy doesn't die, and that if you say 'thank you' to the person that said 'bless you' it dies anyway.

much_aldo_about_nothing (much_aldo_about_nothing), Friday, 1 September 2006 10:29 (seventeen years ago) link

You're not supposed to say thank you because in doing so you re-inhale the germs and then you die. According to my sister.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 1 September 2006 10:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I've told people the 'sneezing and not saying thank you' thing and they all just think I'm a cnut for not saying thank you.

So I keep thanking them just to be popular and fairies die willy-nilly.

Yeah it's just about fertility innit.

ME IN GLASS-IS-HALF-EMPTY SHOCKAH

I love the "washing away a member of your family." This might not be a bad thing. Shed those unwanted family members.

More superstitions, plz.

I still do it. Family thing. I wonder if my sister's former ferocious reading of Trixie Belden had something to do with it.
