I keep nothing on my pockets except the occasional change, everything is in my bag. I don't understand people who can just go out without a bag, with just a wallet in their coat pocket. I could never do that.

my cat pissed on my bag so i currently have more in pockets than usual.

Why do they fucking do this? My cat pissed on my housemate's art supply bag the other day and I had to replace all her stuff. I did tell everyone never, ever to leave stuff in the hall because the cat likes to piss on things before it goes to sleep on them (???) but nobody believes me.

Anyway, pockets. Coat: front right, dog lead, poo bags. Front left: other dog lead, sometimes dog biscuits. Trousers: front right, phone, keys. Front left: wallet, sometimes iPod.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 21 December 2006 09:31 (seventeen years ago) link

If going out and not carrying a bag:

Front right - empty
Front left - loose change, , phone, cigarettes, lighter (and yes, I do look very lumpy and lop-sided as a result)
Back right - wallet
Back left - empty, usually accommodates bus and train tickets once I'm out though

If I'm wearing a jacket/coat, these then tend to alternate around between coat and trouser pockets, but always on the left or right as listed above. I've worked this out as being for ease of access for the way I use once retrieved (as a left-handed person)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Thursday, 21 December 2006 09:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Keys: Bootlace round my neck.
Debit card/Money: front shirt pocket.
Receipts/Random notes/Change: anywhere.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 21 December 2006 09:52 (seventeen years ago) link

There should be keys between those two commas in my post.

I used to wear my keys on a bootlace round my neck before I got all growed up and needed a gazillion keys for things (three for house, four for work, two for car, etc)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Thursday, 21 December 2006 09:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I still have only one key. My pluralisation was superfluous.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 21 December 2006 09:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Keys: left front trousers, except occasionally I will stick them in a random other pocket for no reason and later on have a five minute panic when I can't find them in the usual place. Last time it took me half a day to find them hiding under my camera and assorted other shit in my left inside coat pocket.

Who are these mentalists who put things in their back pockets? Don't you want to sit down and not be hugely uncomfortable?

Also wallet in back pocket = mentalism. Its the easiest pocket to steal from (apart from coat pockets maybe).

LH coat pocket = Travelcard wallet usually, for ease of access in the winter
Inside coat pocket = camera when I'm using it. Sometimes an A-Z as well.

I don't have a wallet so much as a little felt purse, just big enough for two bank cards, my RAC membership, my phone top-up card, my gym membership and a few bank notes. It fits just fine in my back pocket, but I did used to have a big old clunky man-wallet once and that fitted just fine too. Sitting down has never been a problem, in fact, I think it would be harder to sit down with a wallet in your front pocket as you tend to kind of bend around where the wallet would jab in most, is that not the case?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Thursday, 21 December 2006 10:15 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm all about trouser pockets:

Back left: wallet
Back right: money
Front right: small change & phone
Front left: DS Lite

It's very rare that I use coat/jacket pockets. I never break the above pocketing system.

jhoshea (jhoshea), Thursday, 21 December 2006 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I've always wondered about the ass-wallet thing, and apart from the main obvious "well that's what I was taught and I'm used to it" explanation, I think there might be a correlation having to do with ass size and trouser-fitting. Basically I used to wonder why a round-assed person like me would be more uncomfortable about this than plenty of bony-assed guys, and then it occurred to me that if your ass is round your trousers are going to conform to it more tightly, and so the wallet will be held right in place and sat noticeably on top of -- whereas I'm starting to think that assless guys in droopy jeans can drop whatever they want in their back pockets because when they sit down the objects are more likely to kinda fold or droop out of the way, or just get propped up against the chair or whatever, so they're not sitting rigidly right under you.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 21 December 2006 19:35 (seventeen years ago) link

My wallet is curved to the shape of my ass.

JordanC (JordanC), Thursday, 21 December 2006 19:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Also I'm surprised some of you keep pens in your pockets! (Though again, this might have to do with my having big thighs and tight trousers -- if I put a pen in some of my front pockets, chances are it'd snap in half as soon as I went into a bit of a jog.)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 21 December 2006 19:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Every time I put in a pen in my pocket I end up poking myself, or forgetting and leaving it in the wash.

milo (milo), Thursday, 21 December 2006 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

> Every time I put in a pen in my pocket I end up poking myself, or forgetting and leaving it in the wash.

This is a major factor in my shirt pocket addiction. I like to always have sketching tools handy, and a shirt pocket is far, far safer than a pants pocket for such supplies.

i got this awesome new jacket where phone goes in one pocket, and wallet in the other. keys stay in my bag all day.

if i put stuff in pants pockets, i tend to just use the back ones, then take everything out when i sit.

69 (pete), Thursday, 21 December 2006 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Empty pockets. I inevitably leave the one thing I really need in the wrong pocket so I keep everything necessary in the same bag and always take that with me.

I used to carry a pocket knife (Leatherman, really) but had to go to federal court and forgot about that whole "no weapons in federal court" thing and had to give it to some stranger out on the street since I thought hiding anything in the bushes outside a federal building would look a wee bit suspect.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 21 December 2006 19:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not saying I wear lycra or "skinny jeans" or anything, just that I'm not walking around in the kind of big-ass raver pants it would take for a guy with my thighs to go sticking pens in his pockets. If I bought trousers much bigger they'd wind up getting way too long for me, plus I'd have do so a comedy-yokel cinching at the belt.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 21 December 2006 19:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I recommend a length of extension cord for that.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 21 December 2006 19:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't stand the 'pull the wallet out put it back thing from the back pockets' and it's way easier to pickpocket a rear pocket so I use the front ones, but my wallet's not super thick and I've learned to stack things, even in relatively tight pants, like jeans (yes, even I sometimes wear jeans), so that, say, the heavier lighter is at the bottom of the pocket and the lighter cigarettes are above. If things get too tight, I put the cigs in a case that I carry in my interior right breast pocket of my jacket.

Michael White (Miguelito), Thursday, 21 December 2006 19:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Front left: Wallet, keys (except for in winter when keys sometimes go in right coat pocket [iPod is in left coat pocket]), change
