Christmas Card Overdrive

The crux of that (probably too mean) blog post is something like "is it really necessary to go nuts giving nondescript x-mas cards to everyone you work with? does doing so devalue the traditional purpose (as I understand it) of the exercise?"

i figure: send cards to people you would not otherwise see, otherwise just say it to them. probably don't bother giving cards to people who are curmudgeonly about Yule and the funny traditions that surround it.

We received an xmas card yesterday and we have no idea who it's from. It's assumed it's someone at the boy's new job, but we have no clue. Instead of a nice feeling of holiday cheer, a general feeling of "who the fuck are these people?" filled the room.

We have a charity box at work that people can (optionally) put a couple of quid in instead of 30 people writing 29 cards every year. Some people still insist on writing the cards because "who is X to tell me I can't write cards" - got to love that Christmas spirit, when you're writing cards to people out of spite.

In that vein, is anyone sort of weirded out getting auto-signed or stamped holiday cards from doctor’s, veterinarians, etc.? Especially when the envelope is hand addressed so the possibility exists that someone you knew sent it but didn’t include the return address on the outside.

We got one from our phone company. And it was FAKE hand-addressed, ie printed in a fake "handwriting" font on the envelope. So, pretty weird on several levels.
