I "love" how so much of the (deserved) praise for DarCoo's The Spirit centers on the "new" Ebony, who appears in, like, two panels. And everybody softpedals what a baroquely offensive caricature Ebony originally was. Sez CBR: the original version "didn't paint the African-American character in the best of possible lights". Why can't we all just agree that Eisner & co. were STONE COLD heinous when it came to that, especially considering that it was the goddamn forties by then, and that sort of bullshit hadn't been "cool" since the 20s. And especially considering how otherwise progressive and sophisticated Eisner's strips were.
CBR further aggrandizes Cooke's mere act of non-racism, "Coke [SIC} deserves an award just for those pages alone, though."

TAKE A CHILL PILL.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 17:07 (seventeen years ago) link

That archie thing is ultraawesome.

I liked the new Spirit; the only issue with Ebony is that Cooke made him say "I ain't shook" in an entirely inappropriate circumstance. That's just embarrassing.

Also, LOL at historical revisionist thinking the forties were somehow more sensitive to racial caricature in mainstream media than the twenties; Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs, anyone?

forksclovetofu (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 17:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I didn't mean that the 40s were awesome racism-wise, I just thought that THAT PARTICULAR caricature had its heyday in the 20s, and wuz probably old hat by the 40s, but I guess not.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 17:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not busting your balls dude; I agree with your response to the knee-jerk "Gosh, he didn't make Ebony's lips look like an inner tube; how sensitive!" comix community response. I don't think you can argue that Eisner's take on Ebony specifically and black characters in general is certainly unsophisticated and undeniably racist by today's standards. In Eisner's defense, Ebony IS one of the brightest and most likable characters in the strip; there was a good one page Eisner did for the Kitchen Sink "Adult" Spirit where Ebony directly responds to accusations (from a Black Panther reporter, no less!)of Uncle Tomming where Eisner uses Eb as raissoneur to does an interesting dance of "mea culpa, but I am still a crimefighting wunderkinder don'tcha know".
I gotta scan that in and post it one of these days; it's an odd piece of work.

forksclovetofu (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 18:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I also don't think you can argue that Eisner has exhibited tendencies in his work that suggest that HE ever bought into racist tropes; his later work in particular seems pretty color blind.

forksclovetofu (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 18:06 (seventeen years ago) link

That's exactly why Eb is so problematic. It's sort of like H.L. Mencken's anti-semitism: Can you forgive, or at least excuse, distasteful things about people because so much else of what they've done is wonderful, or should the awesomeness of other parts of their work make their transgressions even more unexcusable?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 18:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I think it's absolutely necessary with a lot of art to separate artist and art (as well as intention/execution and modern mores/old timey attitudes) and comix is no exception.

For whatever reason, I can't really get up in arms about Ebony. The character doesn't display any of the stock racist tropes in any of the stories I've read; he's just oddly misshapen in a way that once was semi-standard and is now so odd to modern eyes that most folks have difficulty reconciling what the hell the artist was even getting at. It is, to quote Sara Silverman, like when your granpa's complaining about them Mexicans. He's racist but his opinions hold no real sway in a public forum and he'll die soon, so it's okay.

forksclovetofu (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 18:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I read somewhere (maybe a TCJ article) that Eisner slowly turned Ebony (def. a product of the times, unfortunately) into something less caricaturey (sic). (Please note that the DC Spirit will be my first true exposure.)

[xpost]

David RER (Frank Fiore), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 18:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, aside from the way he's drawn and some of his dialogue, Ebony's actually a more fully-realized character than, say, Doolan's Daughter (and even Doolan is pretty one-note, heck, the Spirit himself is pretty one-note).

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 18:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Doolan's mustache more than makes up for it, tho.

I remember reading some Spirit stories when I was a kid - I think in that Smithsonian Compendium thing. Ebony only appeared in a couple of panels in one of the stories, and he was so grotesquely drawn that I didn't even realize he was supposed to be black. I just thought he was some kind of mutant or circus freak or something.

Back on Eisner/Ebony for a minute, I just read the Archive which has the be-bop story in it. Even the editorial says "Eisner was embarrassed in later years by the racism". Is it just me, or does that imply he thought it was acceptable at the time? Let's not forget, after all, that at one point he replaced him by an Eskimo boy who made Pieface look well-rounded in comparison.

PS ARCHIE ABBOTT = HOTTTTTTT

she-hulk and iron man were both let downs. i picked up new avengers and was pleasantly surprised; i stopped reading it maybe a year ago or so. when did maleev start doing the art?

i finally picked up Welcome to Tranquility, and I am soooo on board with that, as well as Criminal. I missed Criminal #1 though; anyone know when it's scheduled to be reprinted?

According to Comic Shop News Batmorrison returns in February. And Supermorrison returns on Thursday!

For real. I had a similar idea for a Superscript not long before it came out, but Grant left my thoughts for how to do such a thing way back in the dust.

And come to think of it, my idea was probably inspired by All Star Superman #1.
