i love that it's in the guardian's 'music' section (not a rockist diss, just saying the lib-dems really are in a bad way).

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

"the Cheeky girl currently polishing Lembit's chin"

ooer etc

Onimo has his finger in the stink (nu_onimo), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

"lembit opik"

99@ (davidcarp), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

I was about to say "it isn't daniella, it's gabriela!" then I chekced the story and they had changed it to gabriela! it did say "daniella", I am sure of it

RJG (RJG), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

waht is "big chin"?

urghonomic (gcannon), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

what with? xpost

M Grout (Mark Grout), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

He said "Pretend you have no marbles"

For the sake of journalistic accuracy we should point out that the Cheeky girl currently polishing Lembit's chin is Daniella.

Still there, mate.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Although on second loading, it did change!

M Grout (Mark Grout), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

The News of the World article is excruciating. As, generally, are most things involving Lembit Opik and either of the Cheeky Girls (it is definitely Gabriela, and that article did say Daniella).

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

how did they get it wrong? there are only two of them.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

She just laughed and said "you're so cheeky!"

Onimo has his finger in the stink (nu_onimo), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

There isn't even a Cheeky Girl called Daniella. The other one's called Monica.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

seriously all of you are making this up

TOM. BOT. (trm), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

lembit opik -- real name, no gimmicks. ok, a few gimmicks.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

yeah if i read a "current novel" where an mp named "lembit opik" had a thing with a member of "pop duo" the "cheeky girls" and the "news of the world" couldn't figure out (or didn't care) if the girl was "daniela" or "gabriella" or possibly "monica" i would say this is "bullshit"

urghonomic (gcannon), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

i would say, 'stop reading ben elton'.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

it's in the main grau as well

dark horse

lexpretend (lexpretend), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

It's as if the press just make it up to suit themselves!

M Grout (Mark Grout), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

I said yeah? Well I can't see anyone else cheeky here. Oh sorry Moniella.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

He was engaged to Sian Lloyd?? The welsh weather girl? (well, she talks about weather in other places too, obv)

C J (C J), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe he'll take Monica/Gabriella/Daniella UFO spotting.

Dom Passantino (DomPassantino), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

So when exactly does TV's Sian Lloyd rush into the arms of her new beau, plucky X-Factor runner-up Ray Scouse?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't Lembit win the Politician Spliff Rolling Contest on The Word?

suzy artskooldisko (suzy artskooldisko), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

Tony Banks, wasn't it?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, and I look what happened to him.

Fat Lady Wrestler (Modal Fugue), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

As do we all!

M Grout (Mark Grout), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

lol typos

Fat Lady Wrestler (Modal Fugue), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

Lembit didn't become an MP until after The Word had finished, so can't have been him.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

Ailsa, are you sure?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Of course my first response on hearing this this morning was "Do they come as a package?" Which I'm sure was what Lembit thought too.

Fat Lady Wrestler (Modal Fugue), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

My favourite bit from the NOTW:
I feel sorry for her. I don't want to be rude but she's twice my age, she's maybe scared and doesn't want to be alone. But she's a very attractive woman. She looks really good now with her hair blonde. Probably she wants to look younger.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

"Do they come as a package?"

That'd take quite some skill to synchronise, I'd have thought.

C J (C J), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Pretty sure - hang on:

According to Wikipedia, he was first elected in 1997. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lembit_Opik#Parliament)

The Word was axed in 1995.

(xpost to Mark)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

oh right, I remember why I'd heard of him in the early 90s - it was coz he'd been a president of the student union at my uni (Bristol).

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

Quipped plucky Ray Scouse at a specially arranged press conference:
"Erm, like, I'm honoured she wants to go with me, like, 'cos I mean like I'm only a Scouser erm is that Gerry Marsden and them two blokes out of the Swinging Blue Jeans like?"
