Sundar, have you heard all four parts of that "Say No More" series? Really fantastic stuff.

No, actually that was the first time I heard any Ostertag. It's really good though.

Now I'm listening to the Gandharvas - A Soap Bubble and Inertia. This morning, I was listening to Sly & the Family Stone, Robert Johnson, and Howlin' Wolf. Went to sleep to Jobim/Regina - Elis & Tom last night, which is great.

Your post reminded me to listen to Evening Star last evening and to order Equatorial Stars.

I can't stop listening to it. Unsettling in a 70s Residents fashion.

What's that BGT like? I've never listened to his stuff but I've been curious.

Boards of Canada - Trans-Canada Highway

Also, Jim O'Rourke - Scend
Silversun Pickups - Carnavas
Gandharvas - Kicking In the Water

I gotta say A Soap Bubble and Inertia has really impressed me. I didn't realize they were so eclectic (and sometimes got so heavy) on the sprawling album tracks. I can see the Jane's/FNM comparisons much better now. Every song is interesting.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 15:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Metheny Mehldau is from this year. I like it so far. It's very straightforward and easy to follow but they're good tunes played with sensitivity, recorded very well. Some of it might possibly be a little samey (a lot of ballads). The musicians connect well with each other and everything flows smoothly. Metheny plays electric on all but one track but only gets really into the FX on one track.

sundarsubramanian (SundarS), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 20:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh wait, he plays acoustic on 2 tracks, I think.

sundarsubramanian (SundarS), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 20:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd be more interested in MM if it was all with a rhythm section.

How come dudes don't do jazz throwdown albums anymore? You know, like Rich vs. Roach. You could have the Dave Holland Quintet vs. Mehldau's group, playing together, playing each other's tunes, etc, you know it would be awesome.

JordanC (JordanC), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 20:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Really, Jordan? I love the more intimate duo stuff, where it's just like an elaborate private dialogue. I guess you're more of a groove guy, though(?). Hey BTW did you (or anyone) hear the Frisell/Carter/Motian album? I'm interested in it of course. Frisell/deJohnette was a real letdown.

Guilty. I haven't heard that new Frisell album...I never even got around to hearing Unspeakable, which I was really excited about.

I don't suppose you've heard that deJohnette/Goldings/Scofield Lifetime band? It seems like it could be great or really jammy.
