if it's any consolation, i got home from work at 1am and can't sleep.

grimly fiendish (simon), Saturday, 16 December 2006 02:34 (seventeen years ago) link

(a lot of the not-being-able-to-sleep has to do with mrs fiendish having just come home vv drunk.)

night shifts when you're on meds for severe acid reflux and xanax to relieve breathing symptoms...classic or dud! it's like a battle of endurance...sleep vs not being able to breathe..but if i take xanax sleep will be impossible to resist...can't drink coffee cos that worsens breathing...

Ugh massive comis Ronan, I've done 2 nightshift jobs, they never get that dealable. If they're deadly dull, time drags - if they're busy, you get exhausted.

My last shift job involved having to do rotating shifts - theyre the worst, you never get used to them. The night one was a day shift from 3pm til 11pm then being on call at home til 6am, being paged every fucking hour with shit you had to log onto a PC to do. I very rapidly lost the plot, drank like a sailor, and then quit.

I did a week of 12-hour night shift last week, 6 pm to 6 am. Felt like crap the entire time, day and night, and it took a full week of normal days to start feeling okay with life again. Even ILX is very very quiet in the wee hours (US Pacific time).

yeah i feel rotten...doing it again tonight...fuck a night shift

Only at night time I see you
In darkness I feel you
A bride by my side -- I'm inside many brides
Sometimes I wonder...
What goes on in your mind, always silent and kind
Unlike the others...
Fuck the mothers kill the others
Fuck the others kill the mothers
I'll put it out of my mind because...
I'm out of my mind with you
In heaven and hell with you...

My Night Shift sisters
Await your nightly visitor
They don't bother me
No they don't bother me

The cold marble slab submits at my feet
With a neat dissection...
Looking so sweet to me -- please come to me
With your cold flesh -- my cold love
Hissing -- not kissing
A happy go lucky chap -- always dressed in black
He'll come to you, he'll come to you

My Night Shift sisters
With your nightly visitor
A new vocation in life
My love with a knife

Fuck the mothers kill the others
Fuck the others kill the mothers
I'll put it out of my mind because...
I'm out of my mind with you
In heaven and hell with you...

Ronan, I thought you were freelance now? This sucks though, I've done it in a couple of late bars and yeah, time becomes so slo-o-o-o-ow

I'm doing a graveyard shift Christmas Eve, and I just found out that I'm not getting stat pay for it because the shift doesn't START on a holiday, even though 8 of its 12 hours take place during the holiday. That SUPER blows.

i worked 3rd shift once for 2 or 3 weeks and almost lost my mind.
i used to work til 12 and then would come home and stay up til 4. my social life became nothing. it was a bad period of my life. then i quit my job and moved :D

tehresa (tehresa), Sunday, 17 December 2006 15:32 (seventeen years ago) link

The nice thing about night shift is it cures insomnia. After being up all crazy hours you'll sleep anytime, anywhere, complete pass out deepity deep sleep. I cannot think of any other positive things about it.

i worked for two and a half years in a closed supermarket from 11 at nite until 7 in the morning stocking shelves. i felt like hell. like a zombie. my stomach was a mess. i never ate right. the flourescent lights did weird things to my vision. i would come home and close my eyes and hallucinate before falling asleep. for real! aural and visual hallucinations. i lived on cigarettes, muddy coffee, and candy. and diner food. and booze. yer only young once! seriously screwed up my knee and back cuzza that job too. it's the job that keeps on giving almost 15 years later!

I worked the night shift at a coffee shop for a year and a half, 10pm to 6 am. After 3am there were usually three to four students in the place. I would sit on the couch and Download music till 6. I enjoyed it for the first six months. It was quiet and I had my laptop. But then sleeping all day began to wear on me. That was two years ago, and I'm still trying to get back on a normal sleep schedule.

i worked until 3 or 4am for about 7 months straight but there's something OK about that, even going to sleep at 5am you're still safely on the side of yesterday/the day before. 7 or 8 and you've crossed over. i don't know how i could do that. i know a guy who worked night shift at a web site for like a year and he said it changed his personality eventually.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Monday, 18 December 2006 00:20 (seventeen years ago) link

It completely made me balls-out insane. Making donuts all night, eventually the hot little circles started to look '80s Wham-style tanned & oiled chunks of manflesh. Also we were all somking weed & drinking Sparks energy drinks. I was also going to college right after my shift. My legs would jerk, I'd take a few incoherent & illegible notes, and then pass out. Bad idea.
