Right then, since the main board is down, we'll move things here.

I've been playing the exp to Call of Duty, as well as the 2004 RTS version of Axis & Allies, which is cool, but crashes even more than the rest of the games on my systems.

What you doing?

1. Playing Chrono Trigger for the first time ever FINALLY. OMG.
2. Anticipating the Wii with every fiber of my being.

Star Wars Lego: Original Trilogy

It's about time!

nklshs (nklshs), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 14:37 (seventeen years ago) link

After a 7 hour one-day binge of Def Jam: Fight for NY on Xbox I can pretty much say I'm done with the single player for good (once I unlock Snoop of course), so I'm going to move on to something hopefully completely different. I just bought Samurai Jack on PS2 which should be a treat because I love the cartoon and Sega. The two combined have the potential to be incredible.

If this fails then I guess it's' back to Psychonauts, which I still haven't finished.

Lego Star Wars looks fantastic - I love the way it looks like they realised that building a Lego Rancor would have been near impossible, so made it a pre-built character like the dragons in Medieval Lego. I'd quite like to give it a go, but no doubt my PC's not good enough.

melton mowbray (melton), Saturday, 26 August 2006 09:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Now that I have a laptop I can actually game on, I really should get round to Psychonauts. After I get round to the rest of my Sims expansions. And the Movies. And B&W2. And and and.... sigh.

We can ALWAYS talk about scrabble.

I had to put Chrono-Trigger on hold because my roomy is being stingy with the PS2, so I went gungho and hooked up the SNES to a tiny 12" tv and have been playing the other classic-RPG-I'd-never-played-before - FINAL FANTASY III - and am in LOVE.

Also, played the Märklin Edition of Ticket to Ride on saturday. I think I like it better than the regular edition, for just the addition of the little passengers. They have their straw hats on, their heads tilted full of optimism towards the sky, their bags packed and they're ready to go.

Speaking of board games: best thing in the world is drunken Pictionary, innit? Especially if you make a little note on yr scrawl after the round of WTF it was you were doing.

I somehow won a whole game, teamed with good friend K (against her fiancee and my bf) by drawing "pina colada". Somehow, drawing a cocktail glass and a coconut tree won the day!

i DRANK a cocktail last night. this is probably why i won: the others were inebriated but for me the alcohol doesn't affect my pea-sized brain. is it considered a faux pas to make words plural lots of times? i discovered yet AGAIN that my dutch is horrendous! fuck new spelling rules!!!

tell me what i should get: rocket slime, mario & luigi: partners in crime, or contact? contact looks pretty cool, i think it dropped today, it's made by the same dudes that made earthbound, anyone played it yet?

also, ffiv advance vs. tactics advance? is tactics just like advance wars? or can you wander around villages and stuff?

deep kid, Monday, 16 October 2006 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

You can't walk around freely in ffta, and i's not much like the FF series at all, though it's pretty addictive and fun in its own right. All you do in it is choose a mission, find the place where the mission is (on a kind of map screen, no wandering around much), fight, wash, rinse, repeat, whilst levelling up and switching jobs. I'd go for ffiv myself, it seems to get drowned out by vi and some of the later FFs when people talk about the best ones and doesn't get the credit it deserves..

Cuz I'm in this sort of situation and every time I switch off the console I feel not only frustrated but totally WIRED for like an hour, it's no fun at all :(

You mistake is in turning off the console. You're supposed to just keep trying and trying with no breaks at all. An effective technique is to deny yourself basic amenities such as food and water, and bathroom breaks, until you manage to get past the tough part.

I finally got a Nintendo DS. And a buttload of games. My 5-second synopses after playing them for, like, under an hour each:

Trauma Center: So far this is amazing. I can see it getting boring super fast, though.
Brain Age: WTF? This is awesome. I definitely DON'T use my brain ever, because after playing this for like 30 minutes I started to get a bit manic. It was like drugs for my BRAIN, MAN.
Big Brain Academy: Eh, didn't like it as much as Age.
the first castlevania: actually only looked at the intro screen.
Cooking Mama: yet to even put it in the machine.
New super Mario Bros: You know, I'll say it... not blown away. My friend puts it as his fave SMB game of all time... and Yoshi's Island second. I think they both rank at (or near) the bottom of my list. SMB3 first, SMW1 second, SMBLL third, SMB2, SMB1, Yoshi, this game. But I'm only on world 2, so what do I know.

I rented three Wii games this weekend, one of them sucked completely (Metal Slug Anthology - why was this released for Wii, again?), and one of them was identical to the DS version (Trauma Center: Second Opinion) I stopped playing it because I hate being insulted by manga characters.

The other one was Zelda, and it completely rules.

Jay (jaymacke), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, and Wii Play is precisely the waste that all of the pre-release reviews and other region folks claimed. Get it if you need the controller, because it takes about three hours to complete every single minigame at the highest level.

Raving Rabbids is like living a nightmare. It's fun to watch someone else stress out over it though. "Gangsta" Rayman is black!

Elebits, as noted above, is awesome; ransacking a house looking for little parasites and zapping them with your ghostbuster gun is more fun than I could've predicted.

My guy's score is at 2048 on tennis. I assumed it stopped at 2000, but that's not the case; you just keep going over the top of the chart. The game doesn't get harder though; you just keep playing one 1900 player and one 2000 player. Twitch reflexes and intuitive controls have me at a point where I'm consistently beating the computer in straight sets. When do I get to play real people online; that's the million dollar question?

Anybody know anything about realtime one-on-one wifi games for the wii? C'mon, they can do it with the DS; what's the hold up?

cosign on the new Zelda being totally fucking awesome. it's as cinematic as any game I've ever played or seen. The twilight bits are totally cosmic/haunting, plus so far all the boss monsters are completely terrifying, which makes up for their total piece-of-cake nature combat-wise. Love the SM64 Bowser flashback with the Death Mountain miniboss.

things I hate so far, a list: motherfucking lava, portal monsters who won't cooperate and keep wandering around out of B-button death range, portal monsters I have to fight in human form, most of the little kids from my village, Midna giving me useless/redundant advice in dungeons.

TOMB07 (trm), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I know I've joined in with too many "Name great Amiga games" lists, normally when you mention the Amiga, I think, Ste. But one I always forget to mention is 'Walker'. Which is still a great game.

As for Zelda, yeah, I hate the portal Monsters, but I've become a pretty big fan of riding round Hyrule Field as fast as Epona will go doing drive-bys (With my sword) on the baddies that wander about down there.

I still haven't made as big a dent in Zelda as I feel I should have, just haven't had a chance to dedicate a whole day to it like I really should. Maybe this weekend. maybe.

Same here - I'm only just catching my stride thirteen hours into the damn thing! (I do have to applaud the designers for building in a pretty brilliant degree of compartmentalization - as someone who rarely has the patience for gigantic sprawling games, it's a huge boost for the game to be structured by goals which can be accomplished in an hour or so, like "find the tears" or "get into the castle" or whatever. Maybe this has been an element of Zelda forever and it's just new to me since TP is the first Zelda I've ever owned and therefore had the time to obsess over; I 'unno.)

yeah zelda still hasn't grabbed me like i want it to, it hasn't become compulsive yet (i played snes zelda recently and literally breathed that shit for a week) tho' i'm only at the zora lake so i guess there's still time. it seems a bit episodic at the moment. i can't wait to properly explore the castle town.

red steel is atrocious. terrible graphics (made worse by the fact that the game relies on long range shooting, often far away enemies can only be detected by gun fire or when they hit you), unresponsive controls, it is neither realistic nor fun to simulate opening a door with a flick of the nunchuck, so much time spent fucking around trying to escape through doors while getting shot the fuck up when a simple button press would suffice, ditto sword fighting, it just doesn't work. the music sounds like fucking propellerheads or some shit, like 10 minute tom rolls and played james bond melodies into atmospheric exhale drones/corny fake "j pop" drum n bass with insulting fake japanese vocals, terrible enemy ai and voice acting ("he's gone..", no i'm fucking not i'm shooting you in the head, dick). it's not so good. i just can't believe they fucked the controls up so bad, like who tests this shit?? how does it get through??

Damn sandbox, since I have to come in ILE to get to my ILG substitute, I've actually started reading ILE/posting occasionally... I am out of my element and sad. Maybe I should be less ILG centric in general (only forum I ever go to).

finally got Dawn of Sorrow. Had to drive out to the meth-fueled lands of Clackamas, to a nice kid who lived in his grandparents stinky house.

gutted i can't play the pinball series games on my amiga emulator on xbox, need keyboard. Nothing a quick adaptor won't fix mind.

I'm surprised by how much fun most of these games still are, usually with emulators i'll play for a few seconds and then switch off but I was well into Robocod the other day. Alien Breed too was something I couldn't stop playing last night.
