OBGYN Questions - a thread for lady things

I've had some strange things going on lately.

I take L0estrin 24, the "short period pill" (so it's super-low hormone). I take it continuously so I don't have a "period" at all. My doc is fine with this and she has adjusted my scrip accordingly.

But for the past couple of months I've had breakthrough bleeding and spotting. I've been on this pill for well over six months so this type of thing shouldn't really be an issue.

Recently, after sex, it was like I had a full-on period. My guy was alarmed and is now nagging me that I should check into it. Should I? Is this really abnormal?

New meds taken in the past couple of months: Minocycline (antibiotic for acne) and Lamictal. I don't remember either of those talking about menstrual issues but could they have messed with my hormone levels or something?

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Friday, 15 December 2006 14:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Abnormal bleeding: run for the doctor. It will probably be ok but just to be sure have it checked out.

:(

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Friday, 15 December 2006 14:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Hey, no need to worry! I had a LOT of bleeding - also like menstruation - during my pregnancy. The first I cried so much thinking I had lost Ophelia. But it seemed that the skin inside was just very fragile and prone to rupturing. Maybe that's the same with you. Are you suffering from dryness before/during sex? If so, it could be that you have a ruptured vein or something.

nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 15 December 2006 14:45 (seventeen years ago) link

ach, much dryness. Thanks crazy pills!

Hmm, I might still put a call into my gyn. to see what she thinks.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Friday, 15 December 2006 14:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Best to check out, but for what it's worth (uh, pretty much nothing, I suppose!), I broke through all the time when I was on continuous normal dose pillage, and it's my understanding that low-dose pillage can be even more problematic in this regard.

Also: you can ask your pharmacist (or go to company website) for the actual product label, which they never give you unless you ask for it. The data in the label is gone over with a fine-tooth comb by the FDA, so if you can get through the excessive verbage it is a highly reliable source of side effect and drug interaction info.

yes this is what I was initially thinking. I used depo-provera briefly and it was constant, random bleeding (if that makes sense.)

The thread title is warning. Anyone who clicks deserves what they get.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Friday, 15 December 2006 14:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I wouldn't worry too much abuot it, really, but just to be sure have it checked out. :-)

nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 15 December 2006 14:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I used to take the pill without a break but after a few months i'd start to feel out of sorts, headachey, bloated, generally unwell. When I got like that I'd come off the pill 'for a break', always seemed to make me feel better but the bleed could last for two, three weeks.

I'm off the pill now after 12 years of almost constant use, and I'm absolutely loving having a cycle and mapping my changes. I can feel when I'm ovulating (which is reassuring!) and can predict which days I'll be at my horniest. This will be so routine for women who don't use the pill, but it's really exciting for me. How sad.

Rumps (Rumps), Friday, 15 December 2006 14:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, but then you have that random weirdness where your period decides to be a week early (last month) or a week late (this month) for NO APPARENT REASON, oh the joys of un-pilled periods.

If the Pill didn't fuck with my moods so badly, I'd go on it just to get some control back over my hormones.

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 15 December 2006 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Hopefully it's nothing to worry about, but I'd still get it checked out (I think that makes it unanimous!).

I don't miss the Pill; I really appreciate the side-effects of ovulation, as suggested by Rumps. Ahem.

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 15 December 2006 14:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I wouldn't mind getting off the pill. But only if it was for the aim of MAKING BABIES!

The bf is not yet at this stage so I am still on the pill. Although our conversations have moved from "If we have kids. . ." to "When we have kids. . ." so it will happen. Hopefully before my ovaries dry up.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:02 (seventeen years ago) link

It totally took me by surprise the first month, like a bear awoken from a long hibernation.... raaaar hungry! Must have meat!

Errr

Rumps (Rumps), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Sam, that was my reason for quitting the Pill, otherwise I probably wouldn't have, either!

I'm done having babies, my husband had a vasectomy, so no more Pill for me. All GREAT!

Rumps, that is hilarious. I have not heard any complaints about that effect, though.

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I would absolutely check to make sure the antibiotic isn't interacting with the pill. Were they prescribed by the same doctor?

I've come off in preparation. We're not ready yet, so we've had to employ the rubber johnny method. I forsee a happy accident at some point in the near future....

It's been so long since anything gynological was linked to anything reproductive that I don't even notice ovulation. Sometimes I get the horn right before my period, tho.

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh yeah aimurchie totally OTM--antibiotics are kind of notorious for decreasing oral contraceptive efficacy: beware!

quincie (quincie), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I went off the pill after being on it for five years, and it was a really horrendous experience. Bloating, mood swings, cramps ALL THE TIME, etc. etc. I'm back on it now, and I'm still getting monster cramps and crying spells from watching commercials with penguins covered in oil. But, it's not as bad. Being a Lady can suck.

molly mummenschanz (molly d), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Bloating, mood swings, cramps ALL THE TIME, etc. etc.

Eh? that was my experience of being ON the pill.

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:11 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, I have gotten (unwantedly pregnant b/c of this before). This was my normal doctor who prescribed them and I asked her about contradictions with the pill. She said she didn't think so but to take them at different times. hmm.

I did do a pregnancy test a week or two ago, neg. but is breakthrough bleeding a sign of pregnancy? maybe I should do another.

crying spells from watching commercials with penguins covered in oil.

hahaha.

kate, maybe you should check into some of these newer low-hormone variety. my obgyn spent a lot of time choosing a pill for me that would play nice with my pyschatric meds/moods.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll wait until they freaking *get* the psych meds balanced until I go throwing hormonal modification into the mix, especially considering how badly those monthly hormones affect the bipolar moodswings.

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I went off all forms of hormonal birth control because there was not a single one that worked properly for me. Breakthrough bleeding (and sometimes oddly colored bleeding) ALL of the time with the pill, a huge portion of the time with the ring. It went away mostly with the patch but that gave me nasty skin rashes and looked so very unsexy.

I have a question too that popped into my head recently, you are not supposed to wear a tampon for any more than 8 hours max (that is if you use them overnight, which I won't do, but I have been told it is "ok"). Why can you wear the Sponge for up to 30 hours max? That seems like a mistake? I am just worried that I shouldn't be listening to the Sponge instructions and I should take it out much sooner. I usually don't let that go more than just overnight just because I think it is kind of gross but I was wondering if anyone had any idea why the Sponge is ok to leave in for ages but tampons wouldn't be; it seems both would have the same illness potential if left in.

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (Allyzay Ei, Friday, 15 December 2006 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Because tampons are bleached and have all kinds of irritants in them, and sponges are supposed to be more natural? I thought it was something like that.

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

sometimes oddly colored bleeding

???

I think Ally means the Today sponge which is not at all natural.

I don't know Ally, that's a good question. The TSS issues are largely due to absorption and soaking up all your natural secretions which then let the bacteria dig in. Perhaps it's because the sponge isn't as absorptive?

When I've used them I've always put them in the close beforehand and took them out after 30 min/1 hr.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:29 (seventeen years ago) link

a huge portion of the time with the ring

this is happening to me. really, really not happy about it. i read up on side effects, but i wasn't expecting this as it didn't happen to me with the pill.

Lauren (lauren), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:30 (seventeen years ago) link

By oddly colored bleeding I mean much, much darker than normal, it didn't look like period blood, it looked like it alternated between weird clotted blood which was very dark and like blood coming from a huge, deep wound. Except never a LOT of blood, it was just the colors that you'd expect from those situations, not brighter like period blood normally is.

I do mean the Today sponge. I'm wondering if the spermicide also kills off some of that bacteria mentioned, so it makes it "safer." I generally put them in close beforehand as well but the instructions on the new new Sponge say that you have to leave them in 6 hours after intercourse, at least (!!!). I don't understand why but I'm not taking my chances after my charming experience with expired birth control pills.

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (Allyzay Ei, Friday, 15 December 2006 15:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Sorry, peeps. I had sickness and lethargy issues with the pill/ring at first, but both acclimated fine (except libido was shot on pill). Ring is/was my choice but I never had the breakthrough. :(

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:35 (seventeen years ago) link

it seems like people either love the ring or think it's the devil's handiwork. i'm afraid i'm going to have to side with the latter camp.

Lauren (lauren), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm going to have a party for my IUD.

quincie (quincie), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Except that I haven't gotten it yet and for all I know it will suck, too.

quincie (quincie), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I did actually like the ring well enough but I was used to breakthrough bleeding, so that wasn't enough to put me off it specifically. It was good to not have to worry about it every day, though the first time I saw it I was completely shocked by its size.

xpost wait this is like the third time you've mentioned IUDs, I assumed you did have one. That shit is supposedly painful as hell!

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (Allyzay Ei, Friday, 15 December 2006 15:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought black clotted blood was perfectly normal! We discussed the clots on the last period thread, before the noize boys freaked out.

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 15 December 2006 15:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think it is normal to be showing up, 2 weeks after your period, was the thing. I am glad to not be on the hormonal birth control overall to be honest, I gained a good 10-20 lbs on it and was forever forgetful with the pills or renewing my scripts.

drink one dark beer per day during pregnancy for iron intake

I was advised to drink dark beer while I was nursing. I think it was for vitamin B-12(?), but also for the relaxing. While I'm sure there are lots of things in the world that are dangerous to developing fetuses, I also think pregnant women are especially easy to terrorize (I know I was). I had my wisdom teeth out under general anesthetic when I was pregnant with my second child and didn't know it. The OBs I was seeing were telling me (with relish it seemed) all the things that would be wrong with my son because of my thoughtlessness. Fortunately, my daughter's pediatrician was able to reassure me, and he turned out healthy.

hahaha "sometimes".

um. actually i hope my cynicism is wrong because i'm seeing a new naturopath today, and hoping she can help address my copious hormonal issues (i have a little growth on my pituitary, it makes for FUN). my endocrinologist put me on a bunch of stuff that didn't work for me after making all sorts of lofty promises, and then gave up on me.

but hopefully a naturopath has all sorts of other tricks up her sleeves. bring on the mexican yams or whatever the fuck.

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 16 December 2006 21:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Why didn't my doesn't-accept-insurance-must-pay-full-price psych tell me this when he prescribed it? he had a list of all my meds, looked shit up on his laptop and told me about the freaking rash but not the lack of efficacy of birth control pills!!!

No fucking kidding. I've been on Lamictal a long time and it was 1 1/2 fucking years before my nurse practitioner (5th or 6th one I had) told me about this. Like you'd think that'd be a top priority issue. That sample pack doesn't say anything, either, but if you just finished out w/the 25/50/100 mg titration I can't imagine those doses would have really fucked anything up. BUT STILL.

JuliaA (JuliaA), Saturday, 16 December 2006 21:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Apparently one beer can cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

I think that's something they say to scare kids (or grown ups) away from sexoring and dranking.

At my last campus the local women's group was giving away keychains that were BEER OPENERS that said, "Drink beer and get all your folic acid!"

Abbott (Abbott), Saturday, 16 December 2006 21:40 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost

I do try to inform myself, but looking it over again, there was one tiny sentence about this in the whole giant PI sheet. I've been much better about it since then. Just advocating for your own treatment plan & how you want to deal with it makes a person way more confident & stronger psychologically in my experience. I know that's not always a possibility, tho.

Abbott (Abbott), Saturday, 16 December 2006 21:41 (seventeen years ago) link

so ilx consensus is that smoking during pregnancy is reprehensible and drinking during pregnancy is OK? i was thinking about this today and realized id been scared so much into not doing these things but i don't even know what harm they actually do.

also, a friend who worked many years in a methadone clinic swears up and down heroin babies are not only born healthy, they are more beautiful than most.

sunny successor (katarina), Monday, 18 December 2006 11:49 (seventeen years ago) link

There's not much doubt that smoking is bad; there's nothing redeeming about the chemicals involved for one thing. I could never drink when I was pregnant - even beer cheese soup tasted too bitter to me because there was beer in it - but I don't think that moderate drinking is the problem with alcohol consumption.

I was really strict with myself wrt OTC medications with my first - I wouldn't even take Sudafed, which is not contraindicated - and that was a mistake because I then wound up with ear infections in both ears and had to take antibiotics and something topical to kill the raging pain in my ears. I might have headed that off with the Sudafed.

(Also, I hated pregnancy because ibuprofen is not "okay," but acetominophen is. Acetominophen does nothing for me.)

I wouldn't hesitate to consult with my ob/gyn, doctor, or midwife on these questions.

woohoo:
The New Drug Application (NDA) for Lybrel, accepted for filing on July 27, 2005, is under review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). If approved, Lybrel would be the first combination oral contraceptive taken 365 days a year without a placebo phase or pill-free interval.

The two trials of Lybrel, a continuous non-cyclic, low-dose, combination oral contraceptive for which an active pill is taken every day without a placebo interval, investigated return to menstruation after study participants stopped taking Lybrel, and the safety and efficacy of Lybrel compared with a traditional 21-day cyclic oral contraceptive.

For those having mood swings and irritability on the multi-level hormone pills (anything called tri- or multi-), ask your dr. about the ones that keep a steady level of hormone every week. Switching to one of those saved my sanity about 10 years ago.

I am going to call my dr. after xmas about this. I can't take it anymore. It never bothered me as much when I was younger, but now I'm an emotional mess with cramps THAT DON'T QUIT.

molly mummenschanz (molly d), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:53 (seventeen years ago) link

so my doctor called in a new pill prescription for me but I forgot to ask her when to start. I'm about halfway through my current pack. Do I finish it or just start the new one?

also I'm still feeling paranoid about possible pregnacy. did a test this weekend, negative, although I suppose I should do another in a week or two.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Monday, 18 December 2006 18:13 (seventeen years ago) link

If I were you, I'd start the new pill after your period.

Oh, and I also toked a few times while pregnant. Once after a prenatal visit, they called to say they found THC in my pee. I said, "Do you have any information that it's actually bad for a fetus?"
Nurse: "Uh, no, nothing has been proven."
Me: "I couldn't find any information that it's actually harmful to a fetus either. As a matter of fact, one study found babies of potsmokers to be better weight and healthier than babies of moms who didn't."
Nurse: "Yeah, that's possible, but we just advise our patients against any drug use."

It made me feel more relaxed, and I figure that's good for the baby. But, as I said, it was only occasional. Smokers of tobacco keep a steady flow of nicotine headed their baby's way. That can't be good.
Obviously, you shouldn't overdo anything when pregnant. There were many foods and beverages I knew I absolutely could not have, from the smell (Slimfast, for example).

Rufus just turned 4 and he's not only reading, he's writing. Cyrus is 19 months old and speaking in sentences.

Maria :D (Maria :D), Monday, 18 December 2006 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

A friend did lots of research and decided that it was the chemicals from the act of smoking not the THC that were harmful. She ate a lot pot cookies while pregnant.

I'm going to ask the pharmacist tonight what to do with the pills.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Monday, 18 December 2006 19:42 (seventeen years ago) link

isn't the point that it's our bodies that are being discussed? I drink and smoke cigarettes - and I try not to get pregnant. I don't want to have kids.
i have been pregnant, and each time my body told me that I shouldn't smoke. or drink. of course, unwanted pregnancies make you want to fucking smoke, and drink.
My body was repelled by the scent of cigarettes. And all I wanted to do was chain smoke until the abortion. Especially when I got pregnant with the IUD.
Ultra sounds - an insensitive nurse asking if I wanted to see "my peanut", only to see, on a screen, that "my peanut" was in my fallopian tube. Which meant my life was in danger.
And I said: "I have an IUD! Why would you think that I wanted to be pregnant?" that is NOT my peanut, etc.
it is sort of brilliant that, when i left the hospital with my ultrasound pictures, I stopped at a bar on the way home. I was leaving the bar when my S.O. - also the seed of the pregnancy - drove by. He pulled over, and I said: "Just park. We have a lot to talk about."
And we sat in a bar and drank and smoked and talked about the fucked-upness of it all.
I got a shot the next day that forces the fetus out of the tube.
Not pleasant.
The pregnancy wasn't viable - and, goodness gracious, I thought that sticking an IUD up my pooty was a barrier against pregnancy!
I smoked my brains out - chain smoked - throuhgout the entire ordeal.
Once I knew that I was carrying a life threatening fetus? Bring on the cigarettes and booze!
However, being pregnant at other times, and even that time, before I knew I was pregnant, made me alert about toxins. I just didn't want to smoke or drink.
In fact, that's a sure sign of pregnancy for me. With the IUD, because I wasn't, no way no how, supposed to be pregnant, I knew because my entire body was telling me that yes, indeed, I was pregnant. If I don't feel like smoking, or drinking, chances are that I'm pregnant.
I have made a firm choice to not reproduce. Being pregnant- gosh, it's weird because I can talk to friends about the first trimester, and then I have to correct myself and remind myself that pregnancy is a state - giving birth and parenting is a whole 'nother state.
It' s your body - my body - their body. I think we all need to let women do whatever they need to do, and not police pregnancies.
That goes along with the assumption, that I dealt with, that every pregnancy is a happy occasion. Of course, once my peanut was shown to be in my fallopian tube, that stupid bitch had her mouth closed.

I just noticed I spotted after taking my pill for the second week. I know this is not abnormal - since I only recently took the pill again - but coupled with the nausea, sleepiness and migraines, I'm going to the doctor this evening. Even though I'm a hypochondriac, I think it'll be normal. Maybe the spotting is unrelated and I'm just so extremely tired? Or maybe I can't stand the pill anymore? Urgh... Give me hope and advice yall!

I had the mirena IUD fitted a couple of years ago as i was having ultra heavy periods that lasted for months at a time. Prior to that i was taking progesterone tablets that made me spotty and depressed. It was a little uncomfortable getting it inserted but no worse than a moderate menstrual cramp and was a wee bit tender for a day or two. I had a bit of spotting for the the first three months but that was a drop in the ocean compared to what had gone before. My periods have all but disappeared and i've had no ill effects.

She's happy to have a diagnosis that isn't uterine or endometrial cancer and a solution that will end the heavy, continuous bleeding she's been undergoing for over a year. I think she should get a second opinion from a doc that is familiar with the ablation technique, but have kept my mouth shut.

jaq (jaq), Friday, 22 December 2006 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I would make the suggestion Jaq. It's not like this is an operation which can be reversed and even if she doesn't follow your suggestion you could at least be giving her something different to consider.

Apparently it's okay that I'm spotting but it's *abnormal* if it happens after three months (of starting the pill). I'm a hypochondriac, but more or less calm about it. More or less cause, well, I'm a frigging hypochondriac. (I went to the doc for this but mainly for my migraines.)

nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 22 December 2006 19:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I fucking need my period due to preggo scares I've had in the past...one surprise miscarriage, one abortion. I've had crazy heavy, early periods, random spotting, et. al. on 1.5 years of Ortho-Tricyclen but NO BABIES and that's worth it to me. It's a sigh of relief every month when I start mental-strating and a pill that left no periods would scare the shitttt out of me. OMG! IS A BABY?

I want to have kids when I'm done w/grad school but the thought of having to give up smoking for a year or maybe forever is terrifying to me. I could do it, the nausea I experienced 4 fucking weeks in the unwanted time might be a nice cig repellant. I never feel like smoking when I've got he vom.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 22 December 2006 21:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Seeing how many smokers don't quit smoking during pregnancy: trust me, being pregnant is not a repellant. I was reading a trashy gossip mag in the waiting room and some minor celebrity confessed to smoking in an interview. She was ashamed but admitted to it. "But we never ever smoke inside (now that the baby's here)." Sheesh woman you smoked when she was IN YOUR FRIGGING BELLY. I don't know... I stopped smoking WAY before I planned to be pregnant so I was ready when my baby arrived (in my belly). Never craved one cig while pregnant. Ah heck maybe I shouldn't be so critical of it. I felt eating pizza and eating crisps (while pregnant). :-)

nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 22 December 2006 21:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I think whether or not you want to smoke/drink/whatever during pregnancy is totally individual to women and even to various pregancies. Any strong smell nauseated me when I was pregnant, including cig. smoke (I'm not a smoker, but still this was a problem even in non-smoking sections of restaurants). Also the taste of alcohol was totally repellant. Of course, with J., so was the taste of water for a few weeks (ugh, all I could taste was minerals.... so bad.)

Cravings I had: Kentucky Fried Chicken legs, extra crispy style; cherry Coke, and burgers from Burger King and Culver's. Not too healthy there!

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 22 December 2006 22:01 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't even have a sense of smell (congenital anosmia), and I think 'smell o' cigs' would be the biggest deterrent actually. Which I cannot access! O cruel twist of fate. If I were to have even the occasional cig to sate shit I would be lynched by the La Leche League.

Sara yr craving list sounds like my non-preggo list. I have been wanting sausage pizza w/a dry red wine for a longity long time now. And I eat KFC 2-3 times a week, Jack in the Box breakfast sammiches every couple days. So.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 22 December 2006 22:05 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost Yeah, you're right.

Cravings? Not really. I ate a ton of unhealthy (read: candy and stuff) during my pregnancy but that was mainly psychological. "YAY I can eat whatever I want!" One time my OBGYN asked me to stand on the scale again cause he refused to believe I had gained so much weight. Oops. Maybe I should refrain from criticizing pregnant smokers and point the finger at me? ;-) I gained about 22 kilos? Juuuust within "that's okay, you're not Jabba The Hutt yet."

What I did hate was warm food. Weird huh?

Oh my doctor gave me another pill. A bit weird Ididn't need to visit the OBGYN but the pill she recommended I have heard of (it being milder than Melian andbetter for migraine sufferers).

i ranted away upthread...but my point is, sometimes women go through unwanted pregnancies (refer to thread title), and I don't think we need to police each other.
There are plenty of governments taking away all sorts of reproductive rights every day. Including my own. Right here in the U.S..

We are not incubators.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Saturday, 23 December 2006 07:14 (seventeen years ago) link

nathalie - are you comparing smoking to weight gain? i don't understand.
You are a healthy mother of a beautiful, healthy daughter.

'Maybe I should refrain from criticizing pregnant smokers and point the finger at me? ;-) I gained about 22 kilos?

Juuuust within "that's okay, you're not Jabba The Hutt yet."

You post pictures of yourself, and your daughter, every other day. I don't quite get it.

My point is that reproductive rights are being stripped, and I'm happy for everyone who has a baby, but your babies are not ready to protect my reproductive rights.

And I AM protecting yours.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Saturday, 23 December 2006 08:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh god, no, I was only saying that I want to be less critical! So many people are pointing fingers at pregnant women and mothers. Even I.Does that make more sense? Just saying that it's their body and (usually) women mean well. Or whatever. Not making proper sense. Cold sort of whacks my brain out.

DEFINITELY.

JustNOtJabba: When I was pregnant. I was rambling.

I think what she meant: We're putting all these rules on pregnant women and we should stop from doing so. Which I think is right (up to a certain point).

nathalie (stevienixed), Saturday, 23 December 2006 15:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Nathalie, I hope you can be less critical, but especially of yourself! You do post a lot of pictures, so I feel like i have a sense of how healthy and beautiful you and your daughter are.
I'm just getting all up in arms about reproductive rights, and fertility being equated with giving birth.
I'm radical about this stuff.
I resent warnings on cigarette packs: "pregnant women should not smoke." - because, working at a reproductive health care clinic that caters to low income women? Damn, a positive result is often the worst news, and the brand new pregnant woman wants to smoke. While weeping, and trying to figure out if whether the bad news is good, or...y'know, the pathos of being pregnant when you didn't know, exactly, that you are pregnant.
I especially resent the signs in bars/ restaurants that say "alcohol consumption can be harmful to pregnant women."
i guess my point is that we shouldn't police pregnancy. Everyone gets to have their own experience.
We are not incubators.
Also, someone else is involved in the pregnancy. Who's policing them?
Smoking cigarettes and drinking in bars might make you more likely to impregnate that cute chick?
I don't get it. The onus is on women, and I think that sucks.

Alison OTM. I mean, a lot of people MARCHED so as not to live some sort of Handmaid's Tale nightmare. My pregnant friends do not need sanctimony of any kind.

suzy artskooldisko (suzy artskooldisko), Saturday, 23 December 2006 16:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Choosing a hysterectomy with fibroids is very much about fertility. has your sister had kids?
My experience has been with young women who want to stay fertile.
Any doctor who says fibroids = cancer needs to work in a clinic for a few months.
At the clinic i work for, we saw a huge spike in positive chlamydia results - because, since we rely on government funding, we were behind on the results, as opposed to the tests. it was really awful - having to call people and delicately say "you have tested positive for chlamydia."
"You need to call all of your partners."
Don't get me started on HPV.
But women get more - um - fibrous? - as they age, and giving birth can influence the production of fibroids.
because birth is scarring? I don't know. It's pretty fucking radical.
Fibroids isn't cancer.
it's an indication, not a result.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Saturday, 23 December 2006 19:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I've been diagnosed with fibroids but right now they are tiiiny; also 25 per cent of women have them at some stage.

Fibroids and pap smears.Someone should write a song.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Saturday, 23 December 2006 21:15 (seventeen years ago) link

My sis is 44, childless and wants to stay that way. She let things go for so long because she was afraid of a cancer diagnosis; people are funny like that. She also had earlier issues with precancerous cells in pap smears which resulted in a very painful coning operation, so skittish. Most women will develop fibroids apparently, childless or multiparous, but most also remain symptom free. The fibroid cells are estrogen sensitive, and so tend to express during the hormone swings of perimenopause, declining as estrogen production ends with menopause. They aren't life-threatening, but can cause anemia and annoyance. When the holidays are over and sanity is somewhat restored, I'll mention the ablation technique to her. I know she had a difficult time finding a competent-seeming doctor, so may not want to put the energy into getting a second opinion when a "simple" solution has been offered her.

jaq (jaq), Saturday, 23 December 2006 23:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Not so "simple" when you're missing all your hormones. :((

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 23 December 2006 23:17 (seventeen years ago) link

having her look up the two processes to compare the procedures, costs, and healing time might go quite a ways toward changing her mind, or at least make her willing to discuss the issue with her doctor.

I had a slight cramp on Christmas morning but nothing since.

I discovered the fertility awareness method in 2005 (taking charge of your fertility, by Toni Weschler), and I wish that we'd been taught it at school, I've found it so empowering to know so much about my body. With irregular periods it's been fantastic to know exactly when to expect it, to avoid 'oh my god, where the hell's my period?' when in fact I haven't even ovulated yet, and it is a huge boon to timing when it comes to conceiving too, apparently. I'm not sure I'd ever be confident enough to rely on it 100% for contraceptive purposes, but it definitely helps to know when you're 100% safe and need no other methods and when it might be a bit dodgy.

last cycle was 58 days, if I hadn't been charting I'd have been in the loony bin by the end of it!

vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 11:41 (seventeen years ago) link

58 days??? WTF? I'm on day 35, I was ovulating on day 13. I'm normally bang on day 30 (which makes me five days late - not four - aaarghh!!)

Uh when I said periods, I meant brown discharge (which is old blood). :-( I had a blood test which was a *success* but I still don't know why/how the brown discharge comes from. :-(

Rumps! WOOHOO! Let's Xross our fingers! Do/did you have VERY sensitive breasts?

nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 12:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Hmm, we've just bought a house but I didn't think I was overly stressed. More excited I guess. Stress doesn't really affect me physically though so I hadn't given that a thought.

No Nath, my boobs aren't sore at all. They look bigger though.
