I dropped out. As always. I never have any nightmares about that, but some nights I do break into sweats about not having finished highschool, which I actually did do. I should have been able to finish university but I just didn't see the point (at the time). Maybe I'll regret it one day, but for now it was the best decision I could have done: I just couldn't see myself being a child psychologist and witness all the sadness.

nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 14:14 (seventeen years ago) link

It wasn't until my second year of art school that the administration realized I was a high school dropout and insisted I get a GED. Two days of testing rather than two years of high school!!! Then I dropped out of art school. Finished a college undergrad degree, but only because—weirdly, considering my lack of real schooling—they accepted me as a junior.

At age 50 I have finally stopped having nightmares about being back in school.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

To all you drop outs, I have a question. Should I drop out before I flunk out? Which one is classier?

jibe (jibe), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 20:44 (seventeen years ago) link

dropping out might provide more satisfaction, but they're both really solid options.

a_p (a_p), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 20:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I have one or two nightmare a year that I failed one class senior year (usually government, which is odd - I even killed on the AP test for that one) and someone figured it out and now I'm having to go every other day for a semester to make it up even though I have my diploma. (Clear implication: I'm still in the same town and bitter about it.)

A new twist on that one is having to attend one class in junior high while in my dream I'm in high school or college.

Between these and recurring waitmares, I'd kill for some nice, normal serial killer-torture dreams.

milo (milo), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 21:00 (seventeen years ago) link

one side of the library at zoo-mass was sinking but it had nothing to do with the weight of books and everything to do with the rapid growth of the physical plant of the university and the changes to the water table/drainage of the campus.

otto midnight, that 'tofu makes you gay' ding dong (otto midnight), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 21:01 (seventeen years ago) link

I 'flunked out' after my two semesters (cumulative GPA - .43 or something) but they let me back in after a semester.

Dropping out before you flunk out is generally preferable.

Matilda Wormwood (Mary ), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 23:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Hey, my ex-alma-mater really DID have library problems!

"The Homer Babbidge Library at the University of Connecticut at Storrs has been plagued with problems since its erection in 1978, suffering from a bulging brick facade and concrete floors sagging under their own weight. Five different contractors worked on those walls, and a common suspicion was that the concrete used in the floor pour had been watered. Engineers and architects blamed the problems on design flaws, substandard materials, and shoddy workmanship; meanwhile, the edifice underwent an $18 million repair project in 1995 to correct its problems."

akm, do you live in the U.S.? University Without Walls, through UMASS, is an easy way to finish your degree - and they do long distance learning. Might be expensive for out of state, but they'd probably work with you to make it quick and easy.

a_p (a_p), Monday, 12 February 2007 02:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I had a dream that I was back in school last night =:O

I also had a dream that John Madden interrupted some kind of "science murder" investigation being conducted by [redacted person] and myself to make us all watch http://niggastolemyyoshi.ytmnd.com. I was all like wtf, you're being rude and then someone who I didn't know was like, "You need to read this man's writings" all serious like Madden is a religion. Then Madden invited everyone to "lesbian baseball" which was pretty cool of him.

That made up for the "in school" dream.

Allyzay P. Boxcars (trm), Monday, 12 February 2007 04:09 (seventeen years ago) link

UH sorry to mistake this for dreams thread, I never have dreams and then two vivid ones in one night is fucking with me. back to dropping out!

Oh God, I dreamed that I was back in school for YEARS. ACK!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 12 February 2007 04:14 (seventeen years ago) link

It was really awful. I don't even remember what exactly happened, like somehow it caught up to me that I didn't actually pass my economics class and they took away my degree was the plot and I was trying to figure out methods around this that didn't involve going back to that class ever again.

Allyzay P. Boxcars (trm), Monday, 12 February 2007 04:20 (seventeen years ago) link

nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 12 February 2007 14:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Way to not understand depression, nathalie.

For example, it can be seen as kind of embarrassing/a sign of failure to have to drop out, not really what you need when you already feel shite. I found telling my parents I was dropping out of university one of the hardest things I'd ever had to do in my life. But I had to do it. And they understood. Not everyone else is that lucky.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Monday, 12 February 2007 14:06 (seventeen years ago) link

i know, ailsa, i know. i do understand depression... i just find it so depressing that they can't see that there's another way out. i remember telling my parents and it was EXTREMELY hard... my mom didn't (and still doesn't?) understand. she found i just quit and you (i) shouldn't do that.

having been in one. maybe i slipped here...

nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Right, so surely you should understand that sometimes people just want to die and can't see anything past that? And that no-one (complete tools with hearts of stone excluded) thinks that it's a barrel of laughs? I don't think you need to have suffered depression to know it's depressing when people get so desperate that they can't see light in anything.

parents just don't understand

this one is impossible to even mention around my mom because she's like "oh, if only you'd finished your master's" & none of these responses yet have worked - "it's not useful for anything/I am not able to do the work/I'm an adult and I say no/if you want an ivy league degree so badly plz get one yourself"

my mom was like that for a while too. i had an $80k per year job at age 20 and she was still like, "well if you'd just go back to college you'd be doing so well for yourself"

my mom's general outlook on life is "woe is everything" though, i shouldn't take it personal
