The "Happy Feet" thread

You know, ifyou have kids, going to the cinema is a dubious pleasure. Thesedays, so many kids films have subtexts to keep the adults amused also, but quite often it's pitched somewhat low down or is 'still boring' anyway.

"Happy feet" was certainly a surprise. Expecting a cutefest, what I got was more like Moulin Rouge in it's musical presentations.

All the penguins in one big community, the baby penguin at one point gets captured by ocker eagles going "nice try, son!" and here's me thinking "This is an ILX documentary, isn't it?"

At which point the lead penguin shouts something like:

"LET US ALL STRIVE FOR THE PENGUIN LIFE!! EXCELSIOR!!!!"

(save that one for the nu-ilx, btw)

I think this has been discussed on another thread but anyways - I went to see it with my kids (ages 5 and 9) and they loved it (as did I mostly) The IMDb boards on the subject are hilarious. But for true roffles read Michael Medveds review...

"This may be the darkest, most disturbing feature length animated film ever offered by a major studio"

The Dour Old Christian Uptight Bastards vs Planet Saving Funster Secularist thing was done to death. Exclusion because of difference is a worthy theme (and one that kids know all too well) but this film kicked the arse right out of it.

I thought some of the sexual overtones were a bit much for my kids (aged 5 and 7) but they didn't seem to notice as they were too busy laughing at the funny penguins.

Not enough laughs for my liking but maybe I'm just a miserable git as there were plenty of people around me pissing themselves for most of the film. The scene with the penguins taking the piss out of the seal was well funny though.

I came out of the cinema thinking it was nothing more than okay but my two sons were dancing around like crazy and shouting "DAD LOOK AT MY HAPPY FEET!" and proclaiming it to be Teh Best Film Ever so what do I know?

Oh Noes, your sons have caught teh gay from teh peguins.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 10:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Also as far as I know there was no mention of global warning anywhere in the film but the freepers seem obsessed that it is mostly about this (as well as being anti-God / pro-gay) presumably because they didn't go and watch it and have just read the Medved rant.

Ned T.Rifle (Ned T.Rifle), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 10:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I didn't get the whole "oh no he's gay" thing - apart from teh gays being better dancers :-P ... Mumble spends the entire film in love with a female and trying to impress her. Maybe it's Elijah Wood's fault - he already managed to make an heroic hobbit and a violent West Ham casual look gay.

"Religion hates fun" was the key message with a pointless subplot of "pray for God so save teh planet and you're fucked!"

I was reminded of the old gag about Calvinists banning sex because it might lead to dancing.

Blaze the Violet Flame (nu_onimo), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 10:30 (seventeen years ago) link

It was nothing to do with global warming. Food stocks were low and the old Priestly penguins were telling everyone to keep praying that [whatever they called teh penguin god] would provide while teh gay dancing penguin looked for a practical solution.

Blaze the Violet Flame (nu_onimo), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 10:31 (seventeen years ago) link

"Practical solution" in this case being... dancing!

Blaze the Violet Flame (nu_onimo), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 10:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Also kd lang sings the first song!

I thought the mating aspects were done pretty well - it didn't strike me as over sexualised at all - i read one comment somewhere that the penguins sing "let's talk about sex" (except that the insane poster couldn't even bring themselves to type the word and typed xxx instead)but i'm pretty sure they sung "let's talk about eggs" which is moderately amusing.

I did feel sorry for the fish though.

Ned T.Rifle (Ned T.Rifle), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 10:41 (seventeen years ago) link

They did sing "let's talk about eggs". I notice that song didn't make the soundtrack, nor did Grandmaster Flash's "The Message".

Blaze the Violet Flame (nu_onimo), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 10:45 (seventeen years ago) link

is "The Message" a gay song?

wogan lenin (doglatin), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 11:03 (seventeen years ago) link

"Being used and abused as an undercover fag"

i don't think that's suitable for a song about gay dancing penguins.

wogan lenin (doglatin), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 11:04 (seventeen years ago) link

The only bit from The Message you hear is:

Don't push me, cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to loose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under

My oldest son loves it and wants me to put it on his mp3 player. I don't think I'm ready to start answering "Dad what's a fag hag?" and "Dad what's a pimp?" type questions yet.

and "that's a Bob Dylan reference right?"

the Medved rant:

1) This may be the darkest, most disturbing feature length animated film ever offered by a major studio. At least 80% of the film’s running time shows its penguin characters in pain or danger. Way too high. I thought this about the Magic Roundabout filmScenes of terrifying leopard seals and killer whales trying to devour the protagonist and his friends are so intense as to guarantee nightmares; the PG rating is a joke since the film is wildly inappropriate for young viewers under seven (and their parents)well, my 6 and 8 year olds loved it. Rather than sending you out of the theatre with a song in your heart (there’s a big focus in the script on “heart songs”) the movie produces feelings of fright, discomfort, even guilt. The title “Happy Feet,” suggesting a feel-good frolic, could hardly be more deceptive for a deeply ill-considered project that will make most audience members feel gloomier and more depressed than they did when they entered the theatre.Well, most people seem to disprove this. If you said "Some" then fair enough. If they'd been warned better than "Some mild peril" ahem try getting chased by a shark that bites the feathers off yr ass and see how mild it seems....

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 15:14 (seventeen years ago) link

2) The propagandistic theme suggests that the biggest menace for the lovable penguins is the human race --- stealing the fish on which the birds depend, or ruining planet earth through pollution and global warming. There’s also scenes of a penguin captured for a zoo and tormented to the point of mental incapacity by unfeeling people Many classic animated films (even “Bambi”, or the recent “Open Season” and “Over the Hedge)” featured the equation animals=good/humans=bad but no movie for kids has gone so far in trying to induce guilt for membership in species homo sapiens.
but (spoiler alert) the humans get to find out that this great community of penguins exist, and actually cease the fishing. I don't recall any film where the humans are turned around as swiftly as this!

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 15:14 (seventeen years ago) link

3) There’s also a bizarre anti-religious bias operating unmistakably and gratuitously in the film. The penguin protagonist (known as “Mumbles Happy Feet”) finds himself harshly treated by the aged leaders of the flock, who worship a false God called “the Great Wind” and decry and persecute anyone who dares to challenge their “sacred” traditions. The voice of Robin Williams (in one of his two parts) also portrays a great religious guru and sage who turns out to be a complete phony, with no special knowledge of any kind. When intrepid penguins finally make contact with the “aliens” (otherwise known as humans) the first menacing structure they see is a church.
I refer you to the famous "God: I sent you two lifeboats and a submarine, what more saving did you want from me" joke.
4) As in so many other recent films, there’s a subtext that appears to plead for endorsement of gay identity. Mumbles (the voice of Elijah Wood) displeases his parents and the leaders of his community because he’s born different, and makes an impassioned plea that he can’t possibly change – and they should accept him as he is.
You're nuts. Being different is good. Being different is not the same as being different. each different is different.

and that's that.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Sorry, the bold makes it look like I'm shouting.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 15:16 (seventeen years ago) link

You were though, weren't you?

C J (C J), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 15:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Michael Medved is insane. I also hear that TOMBOT really wants to see this movie with me, but that could just be a rumor.

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 15:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I loved this movie but SPOILER I kind of wish it ended while he was at the zoo, that would've been a ballsy move.

Dragons (per the previous FAQ answer) (nklshs), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 15:49 (seventeen years ago) link

you'd be playing into Medved's hands...

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 15:54 (seventeen years ago) link

There'll be a Prince number with penguins at the Oscars, yes?

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 20:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Mind you, just occurred to me about:

There's one heck of a jump from HF being in the zoo, dancing for the little girl/mum/general public, and him being suddenly back in the wilds with everyone again. I was either expecting some big surprise ending ala Gilliam's "Brazil", or beginning to suspect that there had been some sort of "Pretty Woman" style happy ending stapled on.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 10:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, and the oscars: Probably not, as to get nomd it would have to be new song(s).

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 10:15 (seventeen years ago) link

They did sing "let's talk about eggs".

Oh that's great. Sesame Street changed a song that way, too:

Snakes do it, frogs do it
Even tiny tweedlebugs do it
Let's do it
Let's make an egg

That review makes me want to see it now... Crap, I enjoy my cynical "every animated film has this stupid singing and dancing animals formula" rant.
