December 10, 2006 -- Police and firefighters yesterday rescued a Long Island man who had been trapped in his bedroom for four days after piling up a 7-foot-high mountain made up of bags of his own feces, jars of urine and other debris.

An officer responded to Charles Ruoff's dilapidated home in Centerport around 3:30 a.m. after receiving an anonymous 911 call asking police to check up on the 64-year-old veteran who hadn't been seen in days.

As he explored the house, the cop heard Ruoff calling weakly from a second-floor bedroom where he had walled himself in with a mountain of his own filth. He said he had been trapped since Tuesday.

The Centerport Fire Department freed Ruoff using heavy rescue equipment.

Ruoff was taken to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Northport where he was treated for dehydration, hypothermia, bedsores and general weakness, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Donner said.

yeah, "64-year-old veteran" doesn't really apply to the "come home" bit, does it.

altho one does hope that all VA funding is restored by January w/ the new Congress.

Whenever I see the word "boys" in quotes, I always assume the person writing is talking about either a) testicles, or b) sperm.

Natasha Lyonne behaves in this fashion too; it has less to do with being a veteran and a lot more to do with being crazy.

It helps if you read the whole thread title.

maybe, but something about this thread seemed to imply that veterans are all a bunch of shitbagging nutters, and i balked.

this thread handily proves that non-veterans can be shitbagging nutters as well

By Jen McCoy, Daily Register

What Clyde Hoffer witnessed through the scope of a rifle during World War II has haunted his dreams for 61 years. The tired eyes of the Portage native hint that combat will rattle the soul.

"Not one day he hasn't talked about it. But it's not tiring for me because it's so embedded in his head that you have to listen to him," said Betty Hoffer, spouse of Clyde. "We get up in the morning and he'll start talking about these guys. He's been through hell, and he's telling you the good parts. I can't let him watch TV because he'll dream of it."

"Nobody believes it until you're in it. As many years ago as it was, it comes out like it was yesterday. A memory branded in your head," Hoffer, 87, said.

it is sad that a lot of vets come back fucked up and are treated like shit and have to run thru miles of red tape and aren't helped in ways that they should be helped and aren't given jobs/money/training/etc. homeless/drugs/etc aftermath is too common. on the other hand, look who they are fuckin' working for. how could they expect anything else?

expect the worst, hope for the best. that's an old soldier motto.

daniel seward (bunnybrain), Monday, 11 December 2006 22:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, that's the thing, too, that you have folks deliberately underfunding vet care, and then examining all the quarter million plus claims as a way to squeeze any other nickels out, too.

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Monday, 11 December 2006 23:04 (seventeen years ago) link

my roommate's buddy is a 22yr old vet, back from Iraq, and while he's pretty normal on the shitbagging nutterâ„¢ scale, he's still not totally straight. get a few beers in him and all he'll talk about (in a sort of confessional, off the chest way) is how he had to shoot up a truck full of iraqis driving through a checkpoint without stopping. they didn't have bombs or anything in the car (they later found out), but he had to light them up anyway. two dudes and a woman, i think, trying to get the fuck out of baghdad. he also talks about how he trained for sniper school and watched dudes heads exploding through the scope. he failed the psych test, which i reassured him was a good thing.

grbchv! (gbx), Monday, 11 December 2006 23:08 (seventeen years ago) link

there are so many veterans hospital/benefits horror stories. practically making people go insane to get their check or help. i'm sure there is a good gripe website somewhere.

scott seward (121212), Monday, 11 December 2006 23:10 (seventeen years ago) link

that you have folks deliberately underfunding vet care

Sadly, we have folks deliberately underfunding mental health care, period. It's totally the redheaded stepchild of the health care industry.

whoop de doodle (kenan), Monday, 11 December 2006 23:15 (seventeen years ago) link

th heath care system is not equipped to handle nam vets problems, the VA is a nitemare, and we are expecting an enormous uptick in hospitalizations for civilians any day now and soon th gulf guysgals will be coming home to this weird, slightly lefter, pie basket with no real hugs.

daniel seward (bunnybrain), Monday, 11 December 2006 23:17 (seventeen years ago) link

lefter? Dude, it's institutional.

whoop de doodle (kenan), Monday, 11 December 2006 23:19 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, veteran care would be so much better if it were more right-wing.

whoop de doodle (kenan), Monday, 11 December 2006 23:21 (seventeen years ago) link

here we are:

http://www.vawatchdog.com/

VA Watchdog dot Org is not a VA "hate site." There are plenty of those if that is what you seek.

We believe the VA provides excellent healthcare to qualified veterans. However, the VA is plagued by chronic underfunding caused by politicians who, every year, do not provide adequate monies to support the healthcare needs of veterans.

We also believe that the political appointees who run the VA interfere with the professional and dedicated workers of the VA who do not hold politically-appointed positions. Veterans' healthcare is NOT a political matter and should not be entrusted to those who owe allegiance to any political party.

We also support legislative efforts to take VA healthcare out of the discretionary federal budget and make it mandatory. Such a move would guarantee healthcare for veterans and take the politics out of the funding apparatus.

also, re: "lefter", it's them dimmycrats that have been making the most noise about this for the past 2 years.

I didn't read it as such, I read it as "Things Like This Will Start Happening Once Our Soldiers Start Coming Home," and the post itself turned into "Vets occassionally go off their rockers. Sucks eh?"

Didn't think the TT or anyone else was suggesting that all soliders will go batshit. But such is teh intarwebs.

a) rappaport evicted her and wrote a batshit insane article outing how crazy he thinks she is and detailing how disgusting she was which made him look like a huge shithead, no idea what's happened to her since
b) not to be a huge bitch but dude I spelled her name correctly two posts before yours, wtf.
