*shudder*

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 7 December 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Er, for an organisation dealing with ritual abuse, their website is a tad on the cheery side

OTM

tissp! (tissp!), Thursday, 7 December 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

I'll let you know when I get back from this client meeting and see their mock-up.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Thursday, 7 December 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

My colleague found the ritual abuse site because it was linked from a web designer's own site as a fine example of his work!

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 7 December 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

courtney was right when she said web designers were the new rock stars, in the 'anyone can play guitar' sense...

sede vacante (blueski), Thursday, 7 December 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

god I could tell tales of woe. Every admin assistant with Dreamweaver throws hissy fits to do her department's site. One of my clients even sent my big big boss her assistant's resume to show she was qualified to do their site. I'm thinking, "bitch, you want my job? apply for it. otherwise get back to answering phones and let the me do what I was hired to do."

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

Go here:

Roffle at some of the examples.

Okay, that ritual abuse site is completely baffling. Maybe his 13 year old daughter helped him sketch it out.

The pictures from the Imperial Viennese Glaucoma Ball are wonderful as well.

clotpoll (clotpoll), Thursday, 7 December 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

WTF:

Glaucoma Hymn
Glaucoma, Glaucoma, Glaucoma
Constricting vision slowly
Halted by progress of science
Vision of a world united
Beyond all science knowing

that "web pages that suck" has a banner image that is all pixelated and sucky looking. they should try harder, all the stuff this guy is associated with looks like ass

dar1a g (dar1a g), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

I found a dead link on Web Pages That Suck.

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (Allyzay Ei, Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

Like, within maybe 4 minutes, I mean. Maybe I "lucked out" and got just the right article but it seems pretty hilarious if you ask me.

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (Allyzay Ei, Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

yeah it is one of the web pages that suck

jhoshea (jhoshea), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

He claims his site is deliberately kind of sucky:

I like the Pope John Paul II site (you have to wave your mouse over the years):

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - that lazy sob

dar1a g (dar1a g), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

A) that's pretty much a terrible excuse for being lazy WHICH WE ALREADY KNOW BECAUSE HE SAYS IT ON EVERY SINGLE PAGE OF THE SITE
B) doesn't actually excuse dead links throughout your article (to pages on your own site)

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (Allyzay Ei, Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

The webpagesthatsuck site not only looks bad but it's really non-user-friendly!

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

exactly. plus.. good lord, some of the sites he bitches about are not that bad, like brown's grad school site - yeah, the navigation system is annoying and poses major usability problems, but you know what, it looks all right, and was probably done by some graduate assistant for under $5k because that's all they have the budget and time for, or it was done by someone who works in web dev at a university as a resume builder because he/she is new in the field and the pay is terrible. i did a bit of web design at brown, i know

dar1a g (dar1a g), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

the guy seems to be some sort of a douche

jhoshea (jhoshea), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, the navigation system is annoying and poses major usability problems, but you know what, it looks all right,

the former is essential the second, not so much. I develop sites for a major university and usability and accesibility are U&K for us. I also make nice ends.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

you wouldn't really want a website about websites that suck to not itself suck tho, would you?

sede vacante (blueski), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

i nominate ebay just because it is such a chore to list things that have an ISBN, UPC, or ASIN.

sede vacante (blueski), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

Honestly I find the *on purpose* defense to be kind of a dodge. Why not show us what good design looks like instead? Or at least make the damn thing navigable - kind of defeats the purpose if I can't even FIND the examples of bad design.

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i just wanted to find a list of bad websites then i gave up

whoop de doodle (kenan), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

Why not show us what good design looks like instead?

From the page I linked above:
If you want to see something I've done (with some help from others) that doesn't suck too much, my personal site might be what you want.

Blaze the Violet Flame (nu_onimo), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, it's not very good.

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Thursday, 7 December 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

It's ugly, the flowers draw your eye away from the text, the typography is HORRID, and it's not very easy to navigate - for example you have to scroll down for certain things and then you lose the buttons.

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Thursday, 7 December 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

It's clean, it validates. that's good.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Thursday, 7 December 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

that is good. i hear you on accessibility being U&K. but his personal site still doesn't look so hot, he didn't really think about it

dar1a g (dar1a g), Thursday, 7 December 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

liquid layout is so over.

whoop de doodle (kenan), Thursday, 7 December 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

That Pope site is dope.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 7 December 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

no hope in Pope.

obi strip (sanskrit), Friday, 8 December 2006 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

What's the point of picking on websites that are clearly not made by professional web designers?

walterkranz (walterkranz), Friday, 8 December 2006 05:38 (nineteen years ago)

Exactly. Better to have professional web designers show you sites they admire.

whoop de doodle (kenan), Friday, 8 December 2006 05:40 (nineteen years ago)

It's clean, it validates. that's good.

Yeah, but who cares?

whoop de doodle (kenan), Friday, 8 December 2006 05:41 (nineteen years ago)

I LOVE that glaucoma site. It makes no sense! If can't see it, scroll down to the bottom of the nave frame for a CREEPY HIDDEN SURPRISE.
