I don't understand the problem with turtlenecks you people have, it looks very dashing on Steve McQueen.

turtlenecks are classic for a brief moment once every 20 years or so (see late 60s), are we back in the "Yes, Turtlenecks!" period?

Eisbär (Eisbär), Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:22 (seventeen years ago) link

what's the difference between a turtleneck and a poloneck?

(nb: this isn't the beginning of a bad joke. i genuinely want to know.)

^^^ this is a polo shirt, do you mean this??

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (Allyzay Ei, Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:25 (seventeen years ago) link

There's no such thing as a "poloneck" in American. We have polo shirts, they look like those things fancy people wear to play polo in, ie knit cotton shirts with ribbed collars, usually short sleeved.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:25 (seventeen years ago) link

poloneck don't fold over but is longer than mock

jhoshea (jhoshea), Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:26 (seventeen years ago) link

according to google image search, below is an example of a polo neck sweater:

Eisbär (Eisbär), Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh I did a GIS on poloneck now and see what you mean, jhoshea is correct, the difference is pretty minimal between all three though.

I still don't really understand Tracer's original objection. Because it makes the neck clammy & wet? He's a boy with shortish hair to begin with, what's wrong with towel-drying it so it's not dripping from the get-go?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 7 December 2006 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe he has a hairline that extends very low on his neck.

Abbott (Abbott), Thursday, 7 December 2006 19:06 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe by "turtleneck" he means...?

Ack, teeny, if any of your hair is long enough to be interfering with THAT turtleneck, that is a problem I never want to hear about much less envision.

Every morrning I pull my shirt over my towel-wrapped wet hair. Otherwise everything gets wet. It's like re-birthing. I always cuss.

I must have been blitzed! I can't remember posting that. I rings a bell now that I look at it again, so that's something.

Blaze the Violet Flame (nu_onimo), Thursday, 7 December 2006 23:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Those (ie. the Steve McQueen one) are not turtlenecks, as far as I'm concerned. They are rollnecks (sometimes, confusingly, called polonecks by some people in the UK. Not to be confused with polo shirts, such as the yellow one Ally posted). Turtlenecks are like this. It seems Americans call them mock turtles, which makes more sense. I don't fucking know. Why people can't agree on a simple thing like neck names I have no idea. The world is doomed.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 8 December 2006 00:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I agree, turtlenecks don't roll.

No possible way, many generations of LL Bean and Lands' End catalogs have firmly planted the turtle neck (see below) in the American mind.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 8 December 2006 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

wow - when did no-nonsense l.l. bean start giving colors names like green tea?

Lauren (lauren), Friday, 8 December 2006 16:10 (seventeen years ago) link

(And in case you can't tell from picture, turtlenecks have roll-over necks, quite definitely. Ones that don't roll are mock turtlenecks over here.)

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 8 December 2006 16:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I will float the idea of "roll neck", Das, but only when there's no edge on the knitting, which makes the thing want to roll over on its own (as anyone in the ILX knitwit thread will attest.)
