DID anyone happen to catch the end of the Eukanuba something something DOG SHOW on Discovery over the weekend? IF SO, which dog won? Was it super cute or a super disappoinment? I was rooting for the whippet but I think it got 2nd place, I don't recall. If any fucking hound won I will kill someone.

ALSO, do you guys like dog shows? Do you make sure to watch them? Do you have any thrilling dog show stories? I was super stoked when thee footballhead won last year. Look at this cute little badass!

Dog shows are great! Also, that dog above = adorable. It's a definite bonus when the less common breeds get some major airtime. I didn't see the most recent Eukanuba one, however, so I can't tell you who won.

Even my cat Biff loves watching dog shows (seriously -- he will sit and watch the entire thing).

(ok, you can't really see the tv -- but believe you me, it's the freaking westminster dog show from a couple years back)

That is about the best thing ever.

Poker can eat a dick.

We watched the nonsporting dog part, and my favorite dog won in that category—the Tibetan Terrier. He had this total happy-face as he was being trotted around the ring.

I wish I could have a bull terrier like that one. So awesome.

i forgot to watch the second night of the eukanuba championship, and the first night all i saw was the sporting dog round. i think the english springer won, which is a little bit dull. who won the whole thing? i just googled and couldn't find a winner.

much as i love dog shows, i have to avoid watching them with other people as there's always at least one segment involving service dogs or dogs who have done amazing things to save people or what have you and i end up blubbering.

I hearted the PBGV and the wirehaired Dachshund SOOOOOOOOOOO much that I didn't want to watch the rest of the show when I realized they couldn't both win. Also I hate they way they do poodles up for this kind of crap so when that Toy Poodle won I was disgusted. Esp since the Yorkie and the Affenpinscher were so so cute. Also that German Shepherd ruled, wtf with picking the Springer over the GS or the PBGV ;_;

as a life-long poodle owner, it really pains me to see them in competition because of the absolutely ridiculous required haircut. there's a historical basis for it, but at this point in time all it does is give them a lousy public image.

My dog's uncle won Best of Breed at Crufts one year.

One of my grans dogs won Best of Breed too, a long time ago.

SHOCK AND AWE

(call name: "Sarge")

some of the pit bulls are named after Harry Potter's professors, and the Shiba Inus are in incoherent japanese.

I agree with you! My mom used to have poodles, they are really cute, sweet, smart dogs but that HAIRCUT they force them to wear. The historical basis is slightly silly because they version they wear is so exaggerated at this point from the original version. I like them so much better when they are just wearing shorn short hair all over their body and have kind of poofy parts on their head (if that makes any sense), that is the cutest poodle look.

also where the hell are you seeing pit bulls.

clarification: some of the bull terriers.

Ally OTM, that PBGV was the best.

My sis-in-law has a cute black toy poodle with short curly handsome hair and big mohawkish head explosion. They look like cute little lambs when they're short hairs and not that fucking mad stupid naked fluff expolision.

I loved the little minpin too, he had such a proud little trot.

yes! that's how we keep our poodle styled - fairly closely shorn with a modest pompadour (plus a little poofball for the tail). i like the "puppy cut" the best, which is a slightly bushy body with clean-shaven feet and face, but it's harder to keep up as the dog gets big and would probably start to look a bit ape-like.

also bad for poodle public image: overbred tiny toy version.

four weeks pass...
What kind of dog should I get? I am interested in a small dog that would be happy to live in an apartment and that wouldn't need that much exercise. A calm, quiet dog would be nice. I would like a dachshund but I hear they are difficult to train. I took a test and I was recommended: French bulldog, whippet, dachsund, and some other ones I forget. I would like a dog that is not too needy.

Matilda Wormwood (Mary ), Thursday, 4 January 2007 05:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, a corgi type, either pure or cross breed, would be good. They're fairly self-reliant little tykes, and they don't require much exercise. In fact you have to be careful how much exercise you give them, because they have those long backs and can suffer from back pain later.

Whippets and greyhounds are great too. Don't let the size of greys put you off, they actually require little exercise and curl up to sleep a lot of the time. They sleep about as much as cats and have all that lovely soft hair. They are quite needy though, but the big advantage of them from apartment point of view is that they don't bark much.
