you know it makes sense.

This is as good a time as any to point out that I'll be in glasgow at some point between Christmas and Hogmanay for a pint.

much_aldo_about_nothing (much_aldo_about_nothing), Sunday, 3 December 2006 17:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Chinaski's is that place next to Cafe India at Charing Cross, right?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Sunday, 3 December 2006 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

that's the one. looks like it's trying too hard to me, but everyone assures me it's grate.

grimly fiendish (simon), Sunday, 3 December 2006 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Considering this was MY IDEA (sort of), I am saddened I didn't get to choose the pub. Though NOT MONO is a start :-)

Does this place do food?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Sunday, 3 December 2006 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

until 9pm, apparently.

grimly fiendish (simon), Sunday, 3 December 2006 18:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Excellent. See you then!

(is anyone in Glasgow going to Arab Strap tomorrow? Pre-gig pint, anyone?)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Sunday, 3 December 2006 19:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Does Chinaski's do sweet and sour blinis? /worst joke evah

I'm pro-fap, but won't be at AS. I'll be getting my hair corrected instead.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 4 December 2006 11:24 (seventeen years ago) link

why, what's it done?

grimly fiendish (simon), Monday, 4 December 2006 12:12 (seventeen years ago) link

It's what my hairdresser has done that matters. He cut one side shorter than the other when it was meant to be a perfectly even bob. I've had to wear it tucked behind my ears for the last month, so I finally found the guts to complain on Saturday. And he will fix it tomorrow.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 4 December 2006 15:04 (seventeen years ago) link

o! well, i thought it looked nice, anyway.

grimly fiendish (simon), Monday, 4 December 2006 16:14 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe your hairdresser is a big human league fan.

grimly fiendish (simon), Monday, 4 December 2006 16:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Arab Strap were great. I am shite at pool. Onimo has some mirrorball photos. My hair is shite too, but I cannot blame a hairdresser, it's just a quirk of nature.

(I've just got Madchen's Chinaski's joke. She's right, it was the worst joke ever)

We saw a guy with REALLY squint hair tonight at Arab Strap. He had it so plastered onto the side of his head, Onimo thought it was a beard.

I am working until 8pm on Thursday, and have to catch the ATP coach from Central Square by 2.30AM that night - what time does Chinaski's shut?

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 18:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Probably midnight, I would imagine. Central Square = George Square, yes? If you walk down Sauchiehall Street on any given midweek night, you will get free flyers into any number of clubs where you can hang around for a couple of hours after the pubs shut, but that might be a bit tricky with a big bag full of stuff.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

i might be going to a gig at the brunswick hotel later. i might not, though. i'm not sure.

grimly fiendish (simon), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 20:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Or you could go to Dunkin' Donuts.

KeefW (KeefW), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 20:21 (seventeen years ago) link

GF: They can't milk the last-ever thing much more, surely

stet (stet), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 20:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Isn't Central Square the bit with the taxis outside Central Station?

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Or is it?

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never heard of Central Square. Maybe it's new!

KeefW (KeefW), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 20:38 (seventeen years ago) link

no i do mean George Square ("outside the old post office building", apparently)

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 20:40 (seventeen years ago) link

What an extremely handy way to describe it!

Bus picks you up outside site of old city bakeries shop on Sauchiehall street, just up from the Apollo and down the road from where I used to live before it was demolished to build the motorway in the '60s.

KeefW (KeefW), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 20:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Keef, if you mean the Dunkin Donuts on the corner of Argyle Street and Union Street, that's not there anymore, it's been replaced by the wuvverly Italmania.

Old post office building = south side of George Square. Any fule (who hasn't just moved to Glasgow) knows that.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 21:01 (seventeen years ago) link

That's sad. What will anyone who misses the train back do. Actually, I had subconsciously noticed that it wasn't there any more. I dunno if anyone ever did it, but it was generally legendary in Edinburgh, the idea of spending the entire night eating doughnuts because you'd missed the last train back from a concert.

As regards the post office, I think that's my point, in a kind of roundabout way.

I thought I might actually turn up on Thursday to your "fap", but it's a work do tomorrow, which will probably be a little messy, so it might not be possible. Some other time.

Simon... Saw Chris on Saturday night and was discussing coming over when he comes over in a couple of weeks... Hopefully, you will think that this idea will ROCK!

KeefW (KeefW), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 21:07 (seventeen years ago) link

keith: didn't you and ath 0 le do that very donut-eating thing? or was it only ever mooted as an idea?

i went off dunkin' donuts after walking past it at 3am one day and noticing a massive pool of blood outside the door. "maybe it's jam," i thought, hopefully.

anyway: you mean when chris comes through on the 14th? that would FUCKING rock, yes.

the wuvverly Italmania

mrs fiendish introduced me to this place a while ago; it is indeed ace. we actually went in there sober, for lunch, on saturday and got kudos from the waitress for ordering cinammon and hazelnut lattes and an italian-style burger [1] ("everyone's normally so boring", she said. yay me and my uber-cosmopolitan, umm, coffee-and-burger-drinking ways.)

[1] focaccia bun and mozarella cheese. so about as italian as i am, then. bella bella!

grimly fiendish (simon), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 21:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh no, we never went there. In the depths of my brain, I think Andy Williams might have. Maybe he can confirm.

Yes, the 14th... I suspect it will FUCKING ROCK.

KeefW (KeefW), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 21:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I once attempted a night of train missing doughnut munching. It wasn't much fun as the place was full of scary aggresive drunken cunts and after an hour or so me and my mate decided it was safer to walk the streets.

When a dunkin' donuts has bouncers on the door you know something's gone wrong.

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 22:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I fell out with Italmania after they took their nummy arrabiata off the menu.

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 22:30 (seventeen years ago) link

You should try the spicy chicken thingie they have instead - I had it one night and it took about eight pints of Guinness to quell the stinging in my mouth (well, that's my excuse). Seriously, I had tears running down my face and I lost all use of my tastebuds for about three hours.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 22:33 (seventeen years ago) link

(that is actually a recommendation, believe it or not)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 22:35 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe it's jam! Haha.

KeefW (KeefW), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 22:40 (seventeen years ago) link

it was generally legendary in Edinburgh, the idea of spending the entire night eating doughnuts because you'd missed the last train back from a concert.

I certify this as true.

much_aldo_about_nothing (much_aldo_about_nothing), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 23:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, well, having recently missed the last bus back from Edinburgh after a gig, you posh buggers really need to get one Dunkin Donuts too. Teviot till 4 am then a nasty overpriced backpackers hostel (vs sitting drunk in the pishing rain) is no substitute, let me tell you.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 23:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Teviot 'til 4 followed by the Penny Black would be a better idea. There are pubs open 23/7 here.

KeefW (KeefW), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 23:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Or you could've just given me a shout! Calum did!

KeefW (KeefW), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 23:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, but I'd been drinking for, erm, 14 hours by that point. We got about four hours sleep which cost us £30 (which was a FUCKING BARGAIN since I would probably gladly have paid £100000000000000 to get a kip in an actual real bed by that point), bus back to Glasgow, went back to pub, started again for another 12 hours.

(xpost, yeah, I bet going up to a random stranger in the pub and asking "do you know KeefW" would have found us you as well!)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 23:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Also this was at Belle and Sebastian so weren't you off in some glamorous exotic location somewhere (i.e. not Edinburgh?)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 23:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh yeah, right you are... In France.

KeefW (KeefW), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 23:57 (seventeen years ago) link

even better: you could have kipped in KEITH'S BED.

grimly fiendish (simon), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 00:22 (seventeen years ago) link

The more I think abt it, the more I think it will be 'sensible' for me to go home and rest before enduring this all-night bus flight :-(

i am going to go to this gig tonight, tho', which I think other ILXors might enjoy too:

VOLCANIC TONGUE PRESENTS:
JOSEPHINE FOSTER + ZAIMPH (MARCIA BASSETT OF HOTOTOGISU/DOUBLE LEOPARDS/GHQ) + TIGHT MEAT DUO (DAVID KEENAN: SAX ALEX NEILSON: DRUMS)

You're drinking before breakfast now?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 December 2006 08:56 (seventeen years ago) link

is that wrong?

grimly fiendish (simon), Thursday, 7 December 2006 09:36 (seventeen years ago) link

fuck. wish i hadn't been drinking before breakfast (ie last night). bring on the hair of the dog.

grimly fiendish (simon), Thursday, 7 December 2006 12:52 (seventeen years ago) link

are we having food at this place?

stet (stet), Thursday, 7 December 2006 18:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I am having food at home in approximately five minutes, then setting out on the arduous journey to the most stupidly-located pub in the universe. I'll probably be there at the back of 8.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Thursday, 7 December 2006 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

optimo, boxing day

cozeny (cozeny), Thursday, 21 December 2006 10:28 (seventeen years ago) link

The hand-dryers in Chinaski's are the dog's bollocks, they really are.

For Grimly.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Thursday, 21 December 2006 10:35 (seventeen years ago) link

www.exceldryer.com really needs some action shots.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Thursday, 21 December 2006 13:41 (seventeen years ago) link

btw, mild derail, Madchen when are you going home for Xmas?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Thursday, 21 December 2006 13:41 (seventeen years ago) link

It depends on when the fog lifts and how much backlog BA has to clear. Meant to be taking off 7.30pm-ish on Saturday.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 December 2006 13:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I could be in yr hood drinking yr beer on Saturday before the football if you have time for a very quick pint?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Thursday, 21 December 2006 13:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Depends on if I have to drive home, but in theory it sounds good!

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 22 December 2006 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

(will seriously only be for about half an hour, depending when Onimo comes to pick me up and what the traffic's like, but I'll give you a ring)
