At the airport in Buffalo on Monday, I saw Maxim Afinogenov. He is a handsome man with fancy clothes! I stupidly grinned at him for an extended period of time and he gave me the, "Uh, are you mentally challenged?" look.

Anyway, not to gloat, but last time I looked at the rankings, my beloved Sabres were leaps and bounds everyone else. I am unfamiliar with them NOT being the underdog. I think I can learn to live with it, though.

SABRES!!!

horseshoe (horseshoe), Saturday, 2 December 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

uh, i'm pretty sure they don't have that anymore.

jhoshea (jhoshea), Saturday, 2 December 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

it's about time. all of buffalo's teams suffer from the "always a bridesmaid, never a bride" syndrome. we're the town (even though i've moved) of never quite making it.

molly (molly d), Saturday, 2 December 2006 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

Last I checked Buffalo is still 19-3-2 and second in the league (to Anaheim wtf). Remember when the standings were in any way static from year to year? You CANNOT guess what teams will fail anymore. It's pretty interesting.

Will M. (Will M.), Saturday, 2 December 2006 02:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it looks like they're 2nd. As for goals scored though, they're at 105 (soon to be 2+) which is still ahead of everyone else.

This Rangers v. Sabres game is pretty great.

molly (molly d), Saturday, 2 December 2006 02:46 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Gots my tickets for the Predators vs. Sabres game in Nashville on Thursday. I will be decked out in full Buffalo regalia (blue and gold tuque, knit by my grandmother in the 80s included).

molly mummenschanz (molly d), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 22:30 (nineteen years ago)

the nhl is in a sad state of affairs. gary bettman has ruined the game. its a euro-pussy league now...some of the worst and least exciting hockey i've ever seen played in my life. the bruins are a fucking joke team with absolutely no toughness. I miss the old days of hockey. This new shit is G-A-Y.

thebingo (thebingo), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

I really like the way Montreal and especially Huet is playing so far this year. Also, I still can't believe they have the best powerplay in the league. How the hell did that happen?

peter in montreal (peter in montreal), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

They gave Buffalo a right whippin' last night! They're (Montreal) 5 points from first place! I'm afraid, as in Grand Buffalo Sports Team Tradition, they Sabres will burn out and disappoint.

And you're right: Huet is terribly imprresive. The Sabres had some great shots on goal last night, but Huet would not have it.

molly mummenschanz (molly d), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

Boston looked like an f'n goal machine vs. the Sens last night.

I am going to see the Sabres (my 2nd favorite team) when they come to town to play the Blackhawks next month. I doubt I'll nearly get killed like I when I've gone to see the Wings (favorite team), but who knows.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

I went to a Predators game last year, and was disturbed at the lack of Canadians.

I highly doubt anyone will give me guff while I'm decked out in Sabres gear. I know these are fightin' words, but Nashvillians aren't very good hockey fans.

molly mummenschanz (molly d), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

Ha! When I was down there for a wedding a couple weeks ago (thx again for the destination suggestions) the door guy at the Flying Saucer saw I was from Michigan (I still have an old licence) and said "Well, as long as you aren't a Wings fan we won't have any problem" -- yeah, we had a problem. Nice guy though, the first hockey fan I've ever met from Mississippi.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

There are a lot of folks who moved from Detroit to Nashville (Saturn factory, I think, although I could be confused) so there are a bunch of Red Wings fans here, who apparently get rowdy at the games. Godbless'em, even if they have Hasek back. That's probably why the door guy at Flying Saucer had beef. When I went to my first Preds game, I'd only been living in TN for about 2 months, and the Southern accent replacing the Ontarian one threw me for a loop.

(Oh! And you're welcome!)

molly mummenschanz (molly d), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

so apparently Rory Fitzpatrick is now 2nd among defencemen in all-star voting, which means he will probably be in the all-star game.

peter in montreal (peter in montreal), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

Chris - I think the problem is:

1) You like fights & the neutral zone trap (AKA LAME)
2) The Bruins thought trading Joe Thornton made sense

David RER (Frank Fiore), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

Woo - I just got me some sweet tickets to the upcoming Leafs/Sens game through work! i'm not the biggest leafs fan - but man, I really hate the Senators. and these are some sweet ass tickets!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't realize there were hockey fans that actually liked the neutral zone trap. Always thought it was just a crap strategy employed by teams who couldn't score.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Not NHL, but my alma mater got a mention in USA Today. Screw you, North Dakota!

My mom emailed me. She wants me to make a sign that says: GO SABRES! so I can get on TV tonight. I don't think that will happen, for many reasons, and one being that I am clumsy and will knock over my beer(s).

molly mummenschanz (molly d), Thursday, 21 December 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

i love the fights yes...basically just some physical play in general. but when mcgratton tries to take primeaus head off and you've got primeau or mara trying to fight mcgratton...pluuuuueeez.

they need a presence on the bench.

thebingo (thebingo), Friday, 22 December 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

Ah the Montreal media... was channel-surfing and saw RDS interviewing Maxim Lapierre's parents on how disappointed they are on their son's demotion despite his great four-game performance.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Friday, 22 December 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Forsberg starts tonight for the Predators! I wonder if Nashville will try to show they're tough (i.e. fighting), now that he's on the team.

molly mummenschanz (molly d), Saturday, 17 February 2007 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

I called nashville in August, so far I am pretty happy

Will M. (Will M.), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

Still not impressed by the bruins, although i liked the trade and things are picking up.

thebingo (thebingo), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

My fingers are (obv.) crossed for Buffalo. It's about time they win something.
