Drinking thread

So I have promised myself to drink more water. Somehow I forget to drink. Dunno why, but if I don't consciously grab for a bottle, I would never ever drink aside from maybe a few coffees every morning. I don't really believe in the dehydration causing headaches theory. But hey maybe I should give it a try cause I've been having mad migraine attacks lately.

But anyway this is the thread about drinking. Tell me your choice of tipple - sorry couldn't resist using this word, it reminds me of TITS - what you drink in the morning, evening and/or during lunch. Do you like to mix cocktails? Do you squeeze melons (hur hur).

nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 30 November 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

Also, if I drink the *required* one liter a day, I have to go to the loo EVERY FUCKING 15 MINUTES. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!

I should use my fruit juicer again but somehow it just doesn't seem right now, in the winter. Then again fresh juice is so lovely. Yum yum.

nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 30 November 2006 09:59 (nineteen years ago)

You're making me thirsty.

Sir Gregory of St.Kitts (g-kit), Thursday, 30 November 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

Well there you go. Proof of why I don't start many threads. HARUMPH!

nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 30 November 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

It's 2 litres required per day, but I was reading just this morning that you shouldn't drink much more than this as it denudes your body of vital mineral salts

Maaarghk C (Maaarghk C), Thursday, 30 November 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

I am terribly thirsty today. But that's cause I have a hangover from the other sort of drinking.

I must have had at least a litre of vodka...

masonic boom (kate), Thursday, 30 November 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

Two liters? I'll need a portable loo stuck to my bum if I drink that much!

nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 30 November 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

Actually NOW I know why my gran was a drunk: she misread that you need two ltrs of alcohol per day. hahaha

nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 30 November 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

I want to drink more water but I JUST CANNOT TAKE THE NON-TASTE.

It's the middle of an Australian summer so I can't have tea (hopefully, I'll make up for it once I'm in the Northern Hemisphere) to tide me over. I try to drink a fair bit of juice but sometimes it's just not practical (and all too sticky) once the weather goes over a certain point.

I did have a few nice pints to celebrate the last day of lectures on Wednesday in a beer garden. Verrrry nice.

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Thursday, 30 November 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

The whole deyhydration/headaches link isn't so much a theory as a scientific fact -- something to do with histamines, I think.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 30 November 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

Tell me your choice of tipple
depends on the occasion, how long i'll be out, etc. usually stick to beer. anchor steam or newcastle if i'm not planning on getting drunk and depending on if i want a brown ale or something a little crisper. pbr, high life, whatever watery domestic if i'm planning on engaging in some liver abuse. the high water content makes the hangovers slightly more palatable.

what you drink in the morning, evening and/or during lunch.
morning- coffee. weekends or if it's the rare occasion i wake up early enough to make breakfast, oj.
lunch- usually a coke or iced tea followed by more coffee.
evening/dinner- depends what i'm having but usually water. post meal, whatever i have in the house. tea, beer, juice, water, etc. tea is a winter time favorite though.

Do you like to mix cocktails?
there are few things that match the sublime delight of a very dry tanqueray and tonic.

Do you squeeze melons (hur hur).
rarely.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 30 November 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

i need to drink more water too. lately, due to stress, i've had far too much caffiene. coffee or two in the morning. several diet dr peppers during the day and often a couple of beers in the evening. insert waters in between.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Thursday, 30 November 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

yay nukey brown

i drink LOADS of water at work, it's really good for me, i feel more awake when i drink water, whereas coffee makes me feel dehydrated and uncomfortable (i keep my eyelids open, but i feel asleep). and i get to go to the loo a lot which is a GOOD thing. 5 minutes of not working.

I'm worried about going to America because I try to avoid all lagers :-(

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Thursday, 30 November 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

perhaps you should just drink tequila while you're here then.

gonna be stuck in my head the rest of the day.

I thought the same thing, unsurprisingly.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 30 November 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

2 cups of coffee in the morning, water throughout the day, a beer or two in the evening. A soft drink about once a month now, unsweetened iced tea sometimes when we go out to eat. Boring.

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 30 November 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

people don't drink lager in america?

Then again, I am just making general assumptions and I'll probably end up pleasantly surprised throughout my 18 months of drinking alcoholic beverages in the US of A.

After all, I don't know anyone who drinks Fosters, XXXX, etc.

Well, coffee does deydrate you. This is why you can not count coffee in the two liters per day requirement.

Freshly bottled Bud is the nectar...well, maybe not of the gods. Of dryads and hamadryads, then.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 30 November 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

actually i had brooklyn lager once, but that was less like lager than one that wasn't labelled lager! (it looked and smelled like some kind of ale but with bubbles in it)

nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 30 November 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

In order of consumption volume: water, coffee, beer. Occasionally unsweetened iced tea, seltzer, or diet soda, but mostly watercoffeebeer.

There is more than Bud in the US, thank goodness. Mr. Buttez, where in the US are you going?

Lance Rock (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 30 November 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

The one good thing about having a workday routine is it helps me remember to drink enough water - on the weekends though I fuck it all up, drinking beer, dancing myself sweaty, getting high and mistaking my dehydration for hunger and eating seventeen handfuls of cashews, etc.

A friend of mine who was studying Chinese medicine claimed that Westerners drank way too much water, that they stressed their kidneys. Sort of the opposite of what one usually hears. Just saying—there's another school of thought.

I drink MASSIVE amounts of dark roast coffee. Bowls of it. And strongly brewed Lapsang Souchong (loose Hu-Kwa, the only kind to drink) some afternoons to top it off. And a healthy amount of wine—about 2/3 of a bottle per night. The occasional small neat single malt. Water by my bedside. That's all. No juice. Juice is for babies.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 30 November 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

I managed to get Heineken in all the bars I went to when I was in the US. And, oddly, Newcastle Brown Ale. So you don't have to drink Bud lite or anything like that. You'll probably want to though, as I found it was typically $3 for a crappy bud, or $5 for a Heineken. I just drank the Heineken every third beer or so, as a treat.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig G), Thursday, 30 November 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

Bud has no flavour.

Sir Gregory of St.Kitts (g-kit), Thursday, 30 November 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

i like miller lite. you commence the fun making.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Thursday, 30 November 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

PBR is still union made that's the reason i drink it. there's very little difference in taste in the low-end beer market. plus the fact that it's usually only $2 or so in chicago makes it an easy choice.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 30 November 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

Fresh Bud tastes like savory butter. Oh so good. I hate bitterness and yeastiness and hoppiness in beers, though.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 30 November 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

funny how austrians are always oh no one ever drinks fosters but then their most popular beer is brewed by... fosters!!!!!

The only time I bought bottles I got some Canadian Blue stuff. Probably Pabst or similar. I remember thinking: "oooh I've heard of this stuff" of course I was very drunk at the time...

kv_nol (kv_nol), Thursday, 30 November 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

The thing about Americans is we don't distinguish between lager and ale. It's all just beer, and some is light and some is dark, and some is more watery and some is more hoppy. I mean, there are still names like Sam Adams Boston Lager and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, but I don't really ever think about what that means.

Last night I had an Anchor Steam Christmas Ale, which was awesomely intense. It tasted like coffee.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 30 November 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

some of us do john, i know the difference between a lager and an ale and a pale ale and depending on what i'm drinking it with or how i'm feeling i'll order appropriately.

unless, like i said, i'm just out to get 'faced in which case the cheapest beer usually prevails.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 30 November 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

it's weird that victoria bitter from australia isn't actually a bitter but instead is a lager!

nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 1 December 2006 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah but Australians don't drink the Fosters BRAND. Some Australians drink VB or something brewed by CUB, mostly bogans/outback types/people from Melbourne.

In Adelaide, we all be drinking Coopers which is like the best ales ever. AND FAMILY OWNED.

For the life of me, I cannot drink Bud beer without getting this weird need-to-burp-but-can't+heartburn thing, I cannot stand it. Meanwhile I can drink shit like Old Style by the gallon. Am I a genetic anomaly?

drunk Friendster massage (nklshs), Friday, 1 December 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

i drink 3 liters of water a day + 1 coffee but i think i have a big bladder. i am kind of a water nazi though, i can smell if someone is not drinking enough water and I get weirded out and ask if they are thirsty and try to push water on them.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 1 December 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

ew, that is weird carey.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Friday, 1 December 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

carey can you do this when touchinf the screen?? if so, did i drink enough?

nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

I can't tell if people are hydrated by smelling them. But I can tell if their skin is going to burn in the sun by smelling them.

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

ha, i would think it is kind of a common thing though. when people are dehydrated, even before they are thirsty, their breath smells really stale when they talk. it's completely different from when they just have bad breath. like when you can tell when people have a cold from their smell. maybe i am having a prolonged heart attack and i am just sensitive to smells. but i do know i am totally annoying (but always right) when out of the blue i ask bfs if they have drank any water that day because they have that weird dehydrated smell and they always haven't drank anything. my face starts to get weird dry patches and my mouth just starts to feel really weird, especially when I talk, if i don't drink tons of water.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

oh, i also flavor water with lemon and that way I can usually drink a pint all at once. but maybe this goes back to that thing where women never finish their drinks.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

I wish I could earn money for my prodigious pee output.

You could get into the phosphorus biz.

Lance Rock (pullapartgirl), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

Carey, what is this madness about women not finishing drinks?

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

wasn't there a thread about that? I have never had that problem but i guess a lot of girls admitted to leaving water glasses all over the place.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

the only reason I have never finished a drink is if i spill it all over myself and one time at Daddys I put a shot of tequila in my bag "for later".

Carey (Carey), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

yes there was a thread about that.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

SWISH SWISH.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

no, i put the glass upright in my bag. i was so hungover the next day and everytime I opened my "workbag" it was like vomit city. this was a year ago and i remember having to go to one police plaza for work and just reaking of tequila.

i should take back the glass.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

this was over a decade ago when walking out with shot glasses in my pants pockets seemed like a good idea. why do it at all i have no idea. something about drinking on the car ride home i think was appealing to me at the time.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

yo Ronan have you ever tried maté? my old roommate got an idea once that he was going to sell bags of it over the phone. the next time you're in new york let me know, he's probably still got like 5 kilos of that stuff. he swore by it for awhile.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

I've never tried it, but the traditional silver straw/strainers you drink it with are awesome. I love accoutrements.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

I have a box of mate de coca. I accidentally forgot about not drinking it before a drug test. yes you will test positive for cocaine.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

Couldn't you at least put the shot glass in a ziplock baggie or something?

drunk Friendster massage (nklshs), Friday, 1 December 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

i didn't go to the bar with a ziplock baggie and asking the bartender for one so that i may break a law that could result in the bar losing their liquor lisence didn't seem like a good idea.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 1 December 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

There's got to be a way to sneak shots out of bars without them spilling. Maybe a quarter + rubber band?

drunk Friendster massage (nklshs), Friday, 1 December 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

ok I remember both the shot incident being recounted to me VIVIDLY by franztastic AND I remember the ex-roommate mate obsession. I still have that weird gourd they gave me to drink that stuff out of but I don't think I ever actually drank the tea (I lost the special straw).

Bob Six (Bob Six), Monday, 4 December 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

My desk is right by the watercooler so I drink a healthy amount of water per day. Beer - less than I used to but still quite a lot, maybe a 60/40 split between lager and ale. I have a weird psychological dependency on coffee and orange juice, like I have to have both of them at breakfast or it throws my day off. Wine about once a week, spirits I tend to avoid.
