Second-saddest thing in that story: poor friend has the last name "Meth!"

Ok, so he also managed to lose 2 yrs as well: in the highlights it says 65 yrs but in the article 63. Nevermind, RIP. :-(

You know you had a good'n when your highlights take longer than your actual years.

Oh, that is a shame.

popularize the relatively obscure Marvel Comics in the 1970s

I don't know a lot of comics history, but isn't 'relatively' doing a lot of work here? They may not have been as big as DC, but they were never not 2nd until Image appeared, right?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

That sentence is totally wrong. Maybe somebody tried to get across to the AP writer that the X-Men title was relatively obscure until Wein/Cockrum, but the writer mistook it to mean the whole Marvel line.

oh man total RIP - so sad!

69 (pete), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

If they made the 'c' in 'comics' lower-case it would (kind of) mean what I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) says.

In his favorite chair, under his favorite blanket and in his favorite pajamas? It's not a bad way to go. Wonder if there will be some tributes for him?

Probably not again.

Many signature characters Cockrum designed and co-created -- such as Storm, Mystique, Nightcrawler and Colossus -- went on to become part of the "X-Men" films starring Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry.

Cockrum received no movie royalties...

WTF?

i thought this was going to be like that thread about "Saw producer dies" and then a bunch of riffing on a theme. but hey.

Lots of comics creators got the shaft in their employment contracts and hold no rights to their creations. Which one of the major publishers has/had a special line where all of the rights are retained by the creators?

patita (patita), Thursday, 30 November 2006 05:09 (nineteen years ago)

neither, really, though Epic came closest for a couple of years in the mid-'80s.
