"Bad Santa" is all you need.

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 15:01 (seventeen years ago) link

A Christmas Story is still great.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 15:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:13 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah we're looking forward to that one, as half of us haven't seen it yet (i have!)

Ste, Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I think there's also a Disney version of Dickens's A Christmas Carol with Mickey as Bob Cratchit and Scrooge McDuck as Scrooge.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

A DONALD DUCK CHRISTMAS

also claymation christmas?? soooooo awes

69 (pete), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah yes, it's this one. If I remember correctly it's quite good, the scene where Scrooge sees his own grave genuinely scared me as a kid.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:23 (seventeen years ago) link

UH yeah DDXmas was totally the wrong title

69 (pete), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:24 (seventeen years ago) link

How about movies set at Christmastime? "Diner" ("Kids. Kids did this"). "The Ice Harvest."

Factory Sample Not For Sale (Factory Sample Not For Sale), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Alastair Sim's A Christmas Carol rules over all.

Best Christmas climax: The Miracle of Morgan's Creek

Not Christmas movies in the sense that's all they are, but It's a Wonderful Life and Meet Me In St. Louis are the class acts.

Best TV special: Pee-Wee's Christmas Special

John Waters' favorite Christmas movie: Christmas Evil

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 19:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Ethan would want this thread retitled "holiday movies."

Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas:

Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, 12 October 2005

Author: cdg7072000 from United States

This is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. The plot is great and that little Emmet is so cute. This is clearly one of Jim Henson's best films for all ages. There's comedy, drama and suspense. You'll be on the edge of your seat throughout the entire movie. Don't miss out on this classic film! Run out and rent or buy it today. Don't waste any time in delaying. It's clearly a film that ranks up there with other top films such as Ghostbusters, Seven, Saving Private Ryan, Batman Returns, Chicken Run, Pride & Prejudice, Pulp Fiction and many, many more. If you haven't watched this movie yet, then you really haven't lived!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 20:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Best TV episode: the one where Jack Benny drives sales clerk to suicide

Best comedy sketch: SNL's missing ending to It's a Wonderful Life where George (Carvey) and townspeople kill Potter (Lovitz)

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 20:15 (seventeen years ago) link

I saw a trailer for this (http://imdb.com/title/tt0454082/) in the cinema last week. It has the tagline "this holiday season, the SLAY ride begins". It looks like the worst film ever made.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 20:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Tuomas, that review is brilliantly daft.

patita (patita), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 20:19 (seventeen years ago) link

My actual real answer = Comfort and Joy.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 20:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Stephen Colbert's recent It's a Wonderful Life slam actually had non-ironic merit: "oh, villainous businessman wants his loan repaid, BOO HOO..."

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 20:22 (seventeen years ago) link

A couple of faves set at Christmas time:

The Apartment
My Night At Maud's

C. Grisso/McCain (sandglocks), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 20:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually I think the best SNL Xmas skits were the Tonto Tarzan & Frankenstein Xmas carols (JOY. TO. WORLD.). Also I think the funniest thing Horatio Sanz has done or ever will do was the "Christmas Time Is Here" song, but not because of him so much as that dance Tracy Morgan does in the background.

patita: Thanks for reminding me about Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas. It's my GF's favorite. Damn netflix doesn't appear to have it though.

grady (grady), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 20:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas is kind of heartbreaking. I love it so much though.

drunk Friendster massage (nklshs), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 20:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Glad to help, grady. I haven't seen it in years, but it's such a sweet story (despite the need for a hankie).

patita (patita), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 20:51 (seventeen years ago) link

The original Miracle on 34th Street is still very sweet.

Pete Scholtes (Complicated Pete), Thursday, 30 November 2006 00:20 (seventeen years ago) link

ELF is one of my favorite movies from the last five years, holiday season or no.

yetimike, Thursday, 30 November 2006 00:26 (seventeen years ago) link

i think this was the one i loved best a a kid:

http://www.kiddiematinee.com/images/santa08.jpg

it had some plot involving candy canes that made kids able to float/ fly.

grady (grady), Thursday, 30 November 2006 00:29 (seventeen years ago) link

just realized that's actually a comic book tie-in. whatevs.

grady (grady), Thursday, 30 November 2006 00:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm a huge fan of Elf too, the chewing gum scene is great. My Christmas suggestion would be Friday After Next, the 3rd installment of the Friday series. From memory it's got one of those awesome chase-around-the-living-room-smashing-stuff-up scenes.

Badg (badg), Thursday, 30 November 2006 02:40 (seventeen years ago) link

i've got quite the soft spot for christmas in connecticut, a pretty slight yet somehow delightful old early '40s thing with barbara stanwyck. it's so forgettable that you can watch it every year and be completely surprised at what happens.

rudolph is by far the best of those old rankin-bass specials. remember that really insane one where it's the 4th of july and rudolph and frosty are at a circus trying to solve a mystery or something? it was so convoluted i can't imagine any adult ever making sense of it let alone a kid.

No Pia Zadora, no credibility.
