like at this point 'the simpsons' is such a richly detailed world to set stories in couldnt someone find interesting ones to tell outside of w/e crappy jokeless adventures are being inflicted on the simpsons in their own familial hell????

i love this & think it's p much otm, & i kinda remember that south park getting good was the result of them embracing the sort of roaming-eye-around-the-village thing in which we dipped into weird strands of suburban life, rather than just played with the kids. but i think the thing that it requires is just originality & good writing, rather than reliance on guest stars & absurd premises - shit like the reclaiming-the-lemon-tree-from-shelbyville ep was a great exploration of a weird story in the daily life of a small town, & they don't do that anymore, they always end up on safari or in japan or swapping jobs with steve martin or w/e (tbh even this is lazy crit based on what it was like five years ago, i can't imagine where it's stooped to now)

The show is said to fill the void created by the cancellation of King of the Hill, which Bob's Burgers executive producer Jim Dauterive worked on for nearly its entire run.[5]
― Hongro4AS (nakhchivan), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:38 (twelve years ago) link
BTW, I have mused about writing a Ulysses-inspired episode done in an ineluctable "Trilogy of Errors"/"Simpsons Bible Stories" modality. Debating on opening lines: "The Simpsons are going to Ireland!" or "Introibo ad altare Dei."

― some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:39 (twelve years ago) link
well there is something to be said about the difficulty of searching for a new plotline when you've met everyone's love interest, mother, pet etc. etc.
the show prob should have just kept introducing new regular characters
― iatee, Friday, 30 December 2011 18:40 (twelve years ago) link
yeah the premise of the show is 'most hairy-armed asian man in the world opens a burger joint' xpost

seriously tho i have no idea what the simpsons would have to lose from making good episodes again
What if they did like a 24-style plotline that runs over a whole season; I'd watch that.

i really don't believe anyone proposing some kind of 'experimental' direction for the simpsons would actually watch and enjoy episodes like that if they were actually done

this is a comedy show
― iatee, Friday, 30 December 2011 18:49 (twelve years ago) link
there's no inherent comedy in a narrative arc
they can put it on HBO and hire disgusting simpsons slash fic artists to animate the sex scenes
― some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:52 (twelve years ago) link
feel like "characters team up to go retrieve the city's beloved lemon tree from a neighbouring town" testifies to the onetime originality of the show though; routinely introducing others is fine but i feel like part of what makes the early eps so good is their scale & the fact that it is v 'texture of family life' orientated, about someone getting a new substitute teacher or remembering something or having whatever small disagreement w/a neighbour, stuff that's just a conceit to map amusing 'workings of a family' dialogue onto
― ABSTRACT: is my heart. A stranger (schlump), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

yes. i always think of the weird switch when there was understandably suddenly no more lionel hutz & troy mcclure in the show, & suddenly the awful like "generic marketing people" guys, network execs in suits or whatever who spoke flatly & represented corporate culture. like it was a landmark moment, i can't really imagine any of the writers are as invested in the emotional side it once had.
― ABSTRACT: is my heart. A stranger (schlump), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:56 (twelve years ago) link
i bet there are lots of young writers working on the show now who grew up with it and are trying very hard to do their best and honor the show's legacy, which makes it all the more tragic. stuff like that makes me think of what a terrible thing it could be to collaborate with your heroes or be part of something that big.
― some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:58 (twelve years ago) link
schlump, I think you're describing the Simpsons-as-sitcom era, as opposed to the Simpsons-as-cartoon death spiral.

― some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:59 (twelve years ago) link
well I think earlier writers were prob also more willing to shape characters into something new whereas today they're expected to have characters act 'in character'

― Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 31 December 2011 21:42 (twelve years ago) link
yeah absolutely, IMO Archer is kinda in the same realm as stuff like Family Guy where the jokes come so fast and are spoken so confidently that you kind of feel like it just has to be funnier than it actually is
the only animation that really impressed me lately was some weird Adult Swim show called SuperJail (or something like that) that I caught while flipping through channels - I don't know if it was funny per se but the animation was really something
― ...or fold laundry? (J0n Arbuckle), Saturday, 31 December 2011 22:49 (twelve years ago) link
also that "bart the general" clip is really amazing, everyone should be watching this
like all that dumb "Dead Bart" creepypasta stuff was pretty annoying but it did strike me how cool it would be if they really did make an episode that was totally surreal and uncomfortable to watch. South Park kinda crossed this line with the "You're Getting Old" episode but I'd love it if they just once did something totally inexplicable
