I just saw S14 for sale on DVD new and actually didnt buy it which for me, you know, come on. But I'm at that line that everyone drew at S9 or whatever, mines about S14. I'll prob end up getting it anyway.

But yeah the new stuff ugh. Think Ive seen like 1 ep per season the last 3 years. Didnt like any. And for me to be saying that?

wasn't someone on ilx doing like a twitter feed rating every episode or something? i should check that out and see if they did find some good later ones? because every couple years i'll see one and be pleasantly surprised.

there was a 'scare' a couple months ago where the cast was holding out for more money and it looked possible the "we'll stop making the show when it stops being profitable" promise could come to pass, but then they signed new contracts

xpost that's a shame hoy... maybe you should just try to continue it at a comfortably slow pace or scam people into giving you all the dvds

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 13:26 (nine years ago) link

every time I've tried to watch a new Simpsons episode it has been excruciating. there are always funny moments, but very little subtlety or wit. they almost seem like they're aping the very shows that ripped them off now.

fwiw I didn't like the movie either.

You can't even call anything after Season 11, let alone what's going on now "The Simpsons." I take cue from the blog Dead Homer Society and can only call it "Zombie Simpsons": It died long, long ago, but keeps going on undead...

edb, Friday, 30 December 2011 15:00 (nine years ago) link

I saw part of an episode on a plane this week. Homer sold a few filler lines but I can hear jokes about Christian Charity being a porn star name anywhere (SNL basically did the same bit on its xmas show) and that was as good as it got. If it's not as offensively bad as it seemed a few years ago, it might be because I'm desensitized to it being mediocre.

At least Fox has accepted that the voices are irreplaceable and will just nuke it if Dan Castanella wants the yacht that's coming to him.

i have to say, if Zombie Simpsons is the only thing keeping Seth MacFarlane from having 4 shows on TV instead of just 3, i'll allow it

only good recent one was the christmas one this year where they all go forward in time. i mean "good," but better than other recent ones.

Mordy, Friday, 30 December 2011 15:33 (nine years ago) link

what frustrates me with new ones is how dull they look. they never seem to pull off fantistical dream sequences or psychadelic pepper trips or anything anymore. now it just looks like shit.

oh, and its shit and not funny and the stories are stupid and you can't care about the characters because they are all incredible unlikable etc. etc.

Despite Homer's embodiment of American culture, his influence has spread to other parts of the world. In 2003, Matt Groening revealed that his father, after whom Homer was named, was Canadian, and said that this made Homer himself a Canadian.[107]

i thought the movie was alright in terms of narrative, the characters being more or less who they should be, all those things that have mostly fallen apart in the last ten years. where it mostly failed for me was in not being very funny. recent seasons, i've no idea what the most recent episode i saw was. i stopped buying the dvds at season 10. when in hmv the other week i had a slight urge to buy season 11, but looking at the episode list, ayayay, i can't have that soiling my collection.

i love this & think it's p much otm, & i kinda remember that south park getting good was the result of them embracing the sort of roaming-eye-around-the-village thing in which we dipped into weird strands of suburban life, rather than just played with the kids. but i think the thing that it requires is just originality & good writing, rather than reliance on guest stars & absurd premises - shit like the reclaiming-the-lemon-tree-from-shelbyville ep was a great exploration of a weird story in the daily life of a small town, & they don't do that anymore, they always end up on safari or in japan or swapping jobs with steve martin or w/e (tbh even this is lazy crit based on what it was like five years ago, i can't imagine where it's stooped to now)

The show is said to fill the void created by the cancellation of King of the Hill, which Bob's Burgers executive producer Jim Dauterive worked on for nearly its entire run.[5]

a season long simpsons arc that had none of the 4 family members (maggie is still aiight in my book) would be the best thing ever imo. (if it had decent writers, none of the people currently involved in the simpsons and didn't suck.) have smithers uncover shady dealings at the plant, try to get wiggum and quimby involved, some funny stuff involving lenny and carl, as it all comes to a head, burns suddenly has a heart attack/maggie shoots him, turns out disco stu was walter white all along etc.

Agree with poster way above, it'd be great to see utterly bizarre and experimental Simpsons. i feel like the characters and storylines are so well known that you don't even need jokes for weird narrative episodes to be funny. Good use of the existing capital.

Of course nothing like that would ever happen, unless whoever has control over the creative direction totally loses his/her mind.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 31 December 2011 21:42 (nine years ago) link

yeah absolutely, IMO Archer is kinda in the same realm as stuff like Family Guy where the jokes come so fast and are spoken so confidently that you kind of feel like it just has to be funnier than it actually is

the only animation that really impressed me lately was some weird Adult Swim show called SuperJail (or something like that) that I caught while flipping through channels - I don't know if it was funny per se but the animation was really something

like all that dumb "Dead Bart" creepypasta stuff was pretty annoying but it did strike me how cool it would be if they really did make an episode that was totally surreal and uncomfortable to watch. South Park kinda crossed this line with the "You're Getting Old" episode but I'd love it if they just once did something totally inexplicable
