I went from coffee every day to just black tea, to just ONE cup of black tea a day, to green tea to herbal tea. Then I got a shitty illness (not from the lack of caffeine) and had to go back to drinking black tea if I wanted to get ANYTHING done. I want to get back to just herbal before school starts (and still having an occasional cup every few days or so).

i'm also back on coffee again after managing to get off it for about 2 wks, doing basically the same transition from coffee--> tea--> nothing. then had a week where i was unusually exhausted and kept nearly sleeping at my desk, in full view of the office and after drinking it a few times, i'm now back to craving it. there is something so satisfying about coffee! but am going to use this holiday break to try and quit again.

i went from 6 or 7 cups a day, to 6 or 7 much weaker cups until finals were over, now i'm down to about 2 of the weaker cups/day. xmas day is the last day i drink any coffee. i have decided. gf will unfortunately have to put up with me.

For me it's part of the larger goal of breaking all addictions.
― tanuki, Saturday, 24 December 2011 16:13 (twelve years ago) link
for me I have a horrible time getting to bed at a decent hour when I'm NOT on coffee, and caffeine just screws it all up. and my addictive personality prevents me from being able to have coffee here or there...

― nice catch cuauhtemoc blanco niño (dayo), Saturday, 24 December 2011 17:30 (twelve years ago) link
I have one cup in the morning, two or three during the day, and one or two more at night (unless I eat out, in which case you can add a couple of refills). If I had to, I could probably cut back to one cup in the morning and a second at night, but the actual teaching I do during the day has always had a certain amount of nervous energy attached to it, and once I finish a lesson or some kind of introduction, and the kids are down to work, I do like to decompress with coffee.

― Cooper Chucklebutt, Saturday, 24 December 2011 18:14 (twelve years ago) link
If I'm asleep before midnight, I wake up in the middle of the night. Five or six hours is sufficient for me.

this is cool, is everyone else on a similar wavelength?
i have a weird thing about coffee because a guy at a deli next to anthology film archives pulled a denial-of-service on me at 10pm one night & told me that coffee was not cool, you should go easy, he gave me green tea instead. he hovers over my head when i am contemplating coffee, like a guru. coffee is a treat for me. i could not quit tea because i am dead all day without it (but then drinking coffee in the am feels like too violent a wake-up)

I quit all caffeine for a few years but went back when I was training for a marathon last year. Will probably never quit again, it's too good.

I also enjoy coffee more when I haven't had it in a while. Really good coffee once a week is infinitely better than mediocre/shitty coffee every day.

Drank some this weekend, since I'm on holiday, but have trouble drinking it during the work week- makes me a little jumpy and irritable.

Drank a couple of dope cups of coffee after Christmas lunch. But in retrospect it probably explains the temple pounding headache I've got now.

drank three cups of black-coffee this morning alone.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 25 December 2011 17:02 (twelve years ago) link
Have had no caffeine all week. Did have an intense splitting headache for a few days after I stopped. Coffee, I'm thinking, like any upper, manipulates the stress response for its effect. Is only good psychologically for a short while, but in the long term, physiologically bad. I get monkey-brained. I've been napping everyday at 4 instead. Hopefully I can stick to tea next semester with the occasional cuppa joe a few times a week.

I go through the occasional coffee phase, but don't really drink it anymore. Think of it as a special occasion beverage, not a tool or habit.

i'm ready to be done with coffee. i've always been good about cutting back when my intake gets too high, but the second i let my guard down i'm up to 6+ cups a day and i just hate being so dependent. just can't seem to moderate so it's all or nothin.
also hopes it'll ease my sleeping troubles.

going to try decaf a couple of days this week and see how it goes. I would love to be free of the desire, but have been drinking since I was 14, so I'm not expectant that I will succeed.
― calstars, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 20:49 (twelve years ago) link
in my experience when i've quit coffee before, i no longer had the desire for coffee because everything -- including heart no longer racing at odd hours, being able to sleep at night, no more caffeine headache worries, and being able to actually wake up without feeing like a zombie till i've had my coffee -- made it so worth it. But as soon as I get *one sip*!! I desire it all over again and forget the benefits of not drinking it and start untrammelled coffee drinking till I have to quit again to be functional.
