Spicy V-8

Make some fake saline solution with water and a little bit of salt. Water makes contact lenses go weird. If you don't have any salt, poke yourself in the eye until it waters and the tears should clear it a bit. If you must rinse it in water, do the "make your eyes water" bit before you put the lens back in, and the tears should make the lens feel less weird than it will do otherwise.

ailsa OTM.

your eyes'll itch as hell and be very red if you just use water. (guess how I know that!)

actions taken so far to alleviate hangover (and related things):

1. visine
2. indian buffet (belly full of naan)
3. multi-vitamin
4. green tea in vast quantities

next up: nap on toilet

is spicy V8 really good for hangovers?
that might explain why i drink it ALL THE TIME.

Fetchboy, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:17 (eighteen years ago) link

It works for me. I know quite a few people who swear by it.

trees (trees), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:39 (eighteen years ago) link

DRINK WATER. Lots of it. Hangover = not enough water in your body. (or something. but it does help.)

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:44 (eighteen years ago) link

5. nap
6. walk to gas station
7. spicy v8 (gangbusters)

have been drinking water, drank too much water too quick earlier, threw up

I wonder if during the boozing, the kidneys recognize the input as poison and pass it instead of process it? Meanwhile, tissues dry out until kidneys get new signal, "input = water."

That would mean alcohol in your piss, so maybe not.

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Don't over-do it on the v8. Those things have a shitload of sodium and potassium in them. Drink lots of water. Suffer stoically. Post about it on ersatz ILX.

Gatorade. Works like a charm.

molly dahl (molly d), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 18:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I skipped the Gatorade and went all the way to POWERADE. POWER vs gator = POWER wins!

nklshs (nklshs), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 18:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I wonder if AMP, Mountain Dew's bastard version of Red Bull would work. I'd stay away from Vault, though. That shit'll string you out.

I love AMP.

If you don't have any contact lens solution the best thing you can do is stick it in your mouth for a while. Saliva is antiseptic; water contains all kinds of micro-particles which'll fuck up your eye.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 19:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Based on eye hospital experience of a certain Jerry The Nipper, worst thing of all = distilled water. Well, maybe not as bad as sulphuric acid or faeces, but you know.

Alba, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 20:18 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought distilled water = good, mineral water = bad (it has tiny stones from the minerals)?

stet (stet), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 20:19 (eighteen years ago) link

And tiny little welsh men throwing them at your cornea.

Oh, I dunno. I thought the JtN said distilled water, which you'd think would be OK, I agree. But maybe it was Evian that the plonker used. Consult a doctor. Or an optometrist. Were optometrists always called that and not opticians and if not when did they get all arsy about it?

Alba, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 20:25 (eighteen years ago) link

I think if Nickalicious had an optometrist to hand, he might also have some contact lens solution. But it's useful to know. Same also with Madchen's advice. Nice in principle, but if I had a hangover and had been throwing up, I wouldn't recommend my mouth as an impromptu contact-lens-cleaner.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 20:30 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost:

faq:

Optometrists - carry out eye tests to check the quality of your sight, look for signs of eye disease which may need treatment from a doctor or eye surgeon and prescribe and fit glasses and contact lenses.

Opticians (dispensing) - fit and sell glasses, but do not test eyes. They can give you advice on types of lens, such as single vision or bifocal and help you to choose frames.

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 20:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Volvic perhaps? It was mineral rather than distilled IIRC. (xp)

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 20:32 (eighteen years ago) link

There is a whole category with dozens of threads in it on Olde-ILX about Momus and his horrific eye infection.

Ruud Haarvest (KenL), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 20:36 (eighteen years ago) link

That's as good a reason as any not to ever bring back ILE.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 20:37 (eighteen years ago) link

(is the thought of maggots eating out Momus' eye helping your hangover any, nklshs?)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 20:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I guess it's like the difference between doctors and pharmacists. Stupid job anyway. They should at least learn about ears as well or something.

I think I may have confused JtN's eye agony story with the one about distilled water being not nice to drink. They should sell distiller water additives, so you could make up your own water to taste. Like a blue bag in crisps.

while i was taking my hangover dump i counted two people running past to go barf. 0h advertising.

sir thermo of thinwall, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:49 (twelve years ago) link

Our xmas do was last night as well, am rough as fuck today and also had to hand my notice in (unrelated) which I wasn't in the mood for but it probably helped that I felt too ill to be really nervous about it.

I missed all the drama, apparently one of the web team punched another colleague and tried to throttle him on the way home. Dunno if she'll get in trouble over it, she was "unwell" today.

my previous anti-hangover routine:

1) shower
2) coffee
3) breakfast
4) paracetamol
5) bloody mary with double shot of vodka
6) beer (3)
7) 3 more shots of liquor, just to make sure that fucker is well and truly gone
8) repeat every other day.

my new anti hangover routine:

1) quit drinking alcohol entirely
2) wake up feeling refreshed, go swim some laps, congratulate self
