anyone have any genius cough remedies for a 2 1/2 year old!? can't stand hearing it anymore!!! (we've already confirmed she does not have bronchitis or anything. just a cough that won't quit!)

tylerw_sandbox, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

we seem to be one of the only parents we know that won't dope our kid up with cough syrup/cold medicine... but we also haven't had to deal with a really persistent cough. when V's had a cough mostly we just give her honey and lots of water...

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:25 (twelve years ago) link

What kind of experience have you guys had w/ vaccines? Every time D gets them she gets a mild fever and is cranky for 1-2 days following. We give her baby tylenol and that generally helps. I can't imagine trying to comfort her w/out medicine tho :(

Mordy, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:29 (twelve years ago) link

we've had the same experience with evie after vaccines, it's pretty common. one time she threw up a little bit but that was the worst of it.

n/a, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:34 (twelve years ago) link

haven't had any vaccine problems. we do give her baby tylenol - I was referring to stuff like Nyquil/Robitussin, etc NONE of which are approved for use with children under 5 iirc.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:35 (twelve years ago) link

yeah we've done baby tylenol after vaccines and that seems to do the trick. the pediatrician always preps us for the worst (fever! irritability! vomiting!) but it hasn't been very noticeable in my experience.
we've tried honey for the cough, not sure if it's doing too much. should try to get her to drink more water... our pediatrician said we shouldn't use cough syrup and the like til she's like 4. not that excited about it even then, but there are times where I think I'll try anything.

tylerw_sandbox, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:50 (twelve years ago) link

yeah.

I love the old folks who are always like "just give 'em some brandy/rum/whiskey that'll put them right to sleep!" yeah okay thx alcoholic old world wisdom

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:55 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, pretty much a similar experience here with our little guy, baby tylenol after the vaccines. He's not really gotten noticably sick from them, but he seems a little tired and out of sorts.

or, lolanswer:

CAN'T YOU PEOPLE SEE YOU ARE MAKING YOUR KIDS SICK?!?!!?!?! STOP WITH VACCINES!?!?!?! THEY WILL ALL GET THE AUTISMS!!

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:55 (twelve years ago) link

Don't think my kid is autistic, but she is weird. Her new thing:

Me: Do you want to go to the park?
Her: I do, but I don't.

Me: Are you hungry?
Her: I am, but I am not.

tylerw_sandbox, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

hahaha, next time she asks you for something, tell her "I will, but I won't"

yeah i feel like that is right around the corner too. it's hard not to mess with them some times. in a loving way.

oh there's a messin. half the time she's saying it without even listening to the answer. I haven't pulled any "the world used to be black and white until 1949"/"the sun sets in Arizona and is the size of a quarter" bits yet but that seems inevitable.

we have talked a lot about Mars and who lives there (the Spiders from Mars, John Carter, sorns... we are VERY clear about the fact that Sun Ra lives on Saturn tho)

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 23:53 (twelve years ago) link

lol. science class will be confusing for her.

"why?"

My mom gave me whiskey and honey mixed together for coughs...

But apparently cough and cold medicine doesn't even work with kids - http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/index.php/think-of-the-children/

And something else I've read but can't find laid out pretty definitively that cough medicine doesn't really work for adults, either.

it's fun to turn the whys around on them, i.e. "daddy there's a baseball" "why?" BZZZTT crackle

I have felt this way since I was a teenager and pretty much never take it. all it does is make me feel weird in a different way. Like, it just lays a second set of symptoms on top of my original symptoms in an apparent effort to distract me from the fact that I am sick.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 15 December 2011 00:00 (twelve years ago) link

i've always been curious about how a "why not?" would go when they ask "why"

Mordy, Thursday, 15 December 2011 00:02 (twelve years ago) link

oh why not results in some GREAT explanations

Philosophy 101 ennit

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 15 December 2011 00:03 (twelve years ago) link

i think kids know that "why" generally gets a bit of conversation from a grown-up (cause we love proving how smart we are); it's like their only small-talk tool so they lean on it for everything. they don't actually want to know "why" they just want to keep the conversation going

am i alone in having a child who asks "why" in the most stereotypically whiney-bored tone imaginable, i.e. "whyyyyYYYYYYY"

his venerable escutcheon, Thursday, 15 December 2011 00:04 (twelve years ago) link

agreed, this is definitely what's going on

re: vaccines

Our 2 year always ran a fever/got a little sick after her initial vaccinations, but that seemed to diminish after each visit. Now she just gets pissed off for about an hour.

The Real reason I drive a green car:

1) It's the only color the dealer had in stock that was equipped as I wanted (4 doors and a stick shift), and

2) I asked my cute upstairs flatmate Alexis if I should buy the green car they had, or factory-order the gray car I really wanted and have to wait several weeks and pay more. I showed her the brochure with the seven color choices; she jumped up and down and got all excited about the green - "Pick green! It's way the coolest!". So I of course bought the green one, and instead of my car always reminding me of how I keep settling for second best, instead it will forever remind me of a cute girl.

There's a great parenting lesson in here somewhere....

like "a boy will do anything a cute girl wants him to do" - can't be too young to learn that....
