Funkhouser vs Abed vs Walter White.

River Song does not belong here.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:17 (twelve years ago) link

Decent top ten, except for Snooki and I've never seen True Blood or Housewives.

Should I be proud or ashamed for not knowing a single one of these? (I guess #11 isn't Santana the guitarist, otherwise I do know him.)

Tuomas, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:22 (twelve years ago) link

my top 10 would be like

25. Abed ("Community")
30. Adam Demamp ("Workaholics")
42. George Christopher ("Bored to Death")
35. Mags Bennett ("Justified")
4. Tyrion Lannister, "Game of Thrones"

of the characters I know, this is an amazingly OTM list

yeah they did a pretty good job

Mr. Stevenson #2, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

although i still feel like P&R's breakout character being "right wing guy has a MUSTACHE and loves BACON omg omg omg omg" kind of says it all about that overrated fuckin show

Mr. Stevenson #2, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:35 (twelve years ago) link

There is a lot more to Ron Swanson than just that, but given the rest of your post you haven't given much time to the show anyway. I don't think he's #1 worthy, but definitely belongs in the top ten.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

Arya Stark should have been #1

OH NOES, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:38 (twelve years ago) link

fwiw i've watched probably every episode of P&R aired in the last 2 years, because i think it's good, just not wall to wall amazing heartwarming hilarity

Mr. Stevenson #2, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:41 (twelve years ago) link

I love Parks and Rec, but the Cult of Ron Swanson is a little tiresome, IMO.

jaymc, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:41 (twelve years ago) link

esp since Andy is the best character on the show

OH NOES, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:43 (twelve years ago) link

lol @ Skip Bayless

Johnny Fever, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:45 (twelve years ago) link

yeah a lot of these operate under a v loose definition of 'characters'

i wonder if anyone else is posting v much in character in this thread

Mr. Stevenson #2, Friday, 9 December 2011 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

esp since Andy is the best character on the show

OTM. I get why people like Ron Swanson so much, but I fail to understand why Andy Dwyer doesn't get more fanfare. Chris Pratt is hilarious every time he's onscreen.

The characters who are, y'know, actual characters in this list are pretty solid choices. I look forward to Breaking Bad topping MTV's 'Best Films Of 2011' list.

Hairplug Receipts, Friday, 9 December 2011 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

See I kinda feel like they've overdone Andy this year and his character has lost some of the charm.

John Ralphio, duh

Nicole, Saturday, 10 December 2011 15:01 (twelve years ago) link

There's so much more character development on Regular Show than Adventure Time. Feel like mtv.com just included Finn out of network tokenism.

xp like what p+r fanzine are you reading where no one appreciates andy

I'm reading a P&R fanzine called 'MTV.com's Top 50 TV Characters of 2011', wherein the character of Ron Swanson appears in the number one position and the character of Andy Dwyer appears not at all. Which seems to jibe with the lack of fanfare that the entertainment media gives to the character of Andy Dwyer relative to that which they give to Ron Swanson.

Or, if you prefer: Dude for serious bro no one appreciates Andy at all!!!!1!1!!

torn b/w Gus Fring & Louie tbh

Pollbix, Sunday, 11 December 2011 12:41 (twelve years ago) link

I think the scale might tip toward Louie, the clincher being his wrenching unrequited love confessional to Pamela Adlon in that one episode.

glaring omission: Walton Goggins as Boyd Crowder on Justified

boyd and raylan are cool obv but i feel it was good to reward a one-season villain as awesome as mags

dayo, Sunday, 11 December 2011 15:52 (twelve years ago) link

It's Gus. Really, just vote Gus.

Jeff, Sunday, 11 December 2011 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

Okay, I voted for Gus, whoever that is. But didn't they misspell his name? Should it be 'Fringe'? Wait, is Breaking Bad a Fringe spinoff?

In Your Velour Slacks (Hairplug Receipts), Sunday, 11 December 2011 17:21 (twelve years ago) link

(Seriously, though, I do wish Mike had shown up on this list, even though it's already lousy with Breaking Bad characters.)

In Your Velour Slacks (Hairplug Receipts), Sunday, 11 December 2011 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

entertainment media

yeah that's what i mean

ron swanson is the big mnstrm breakout character because he is easily marketable and full of memes, has an appearance that is already kinda funny in itself, is a central character, and the show does memey promotional things like the ron swanson pyramid. andy doesn't have memes because NBC isn't releasing like, knockoff mouserat promos i guess, his appearance isn't inherently funny (season 1), and he's mostly a side character who comments on the central action unless it's an april/andy plot which is rarely the main plot. and a deal of his greatness comes from that -- he isn't in the spotlight so we savor his lines more. shouldn't be surprised who the entertainment media runs with.

meanwhile when it comes to actual fans of the show i read more "why doesn't anyone talk about andyyyyyy" more than i read anything about ron at all

zachylon, Sunday, 11 December 2011 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

boyd and raylan are cool obv but i feel it was good to reward a one-season villain as awesome as mags

I think Tim O is great and all, but Raylan is best when playing the straight man to Boyd and/or Mags. The exchange of duplicitous oneupmanship b/w them was the noteworthy aspect of this past season.

Really? I haven't seen much character development on Regular Show or Adventure Time but Finn is fleshed out quite a bit. Plus Adventure Time is way better

CaptainBurlapSax, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 22:09 (twelve years ago) link

i haven't watched a lot of Regular Show but using the phrase "character development" in relation to that show is o_O to me

never got bumped for results while the sandbox was down, but maybe that was a good thing w/ these lame results

that is a maverick list alright

Number None, Thursday, 15 December 2011 02:27 (twelve years ago) link

some dude, your dedication towards watching (apparently) every show on television is admirable. You do have some good and underrated stuff on that list, I will say (Onion News Network, Eagleheart). And I agree that How I Met Your Mother would probably fall just outside of any reasonable top 10 list.

In Your Velour Slacks (Hairplug Receipts), Thursday, 15 December 2011 02:42 (twelve years ago) link

onion news network is so wonderfully insane
