Did we ever work out what was likely to be the best 7th-gen console?

I'm toying with the idea of getting a Wii, the first time I've ever wanted a console since I tired of my SNES in about 1995. It looks quite good fun, but is it going to be worth it? Nintendo have always tried to puch gaming with new ideas and often failed (remember the SuperScope?). Plus is the competition better? The XBox 360 strikes me as a bit of a boys toy for diehard gaming fans and the PS3 doesn't seem to bring that much to the table in the way of innovation. Still at the end of the day it's about the games - are they better or worse? Is the Wii just a fad?

it will indeed be a fad, and a failure. Do you know why? Because I'm going to buy one.

Fuck those shit marketing strategies - I claim full responsibility for single handedly destroying Sega's console ventures, buy simply purchasing every one of their consoles.

I now wearily turn my war torn bloody eyes towards Nintendo.

We're gettig a Wii. It'll be like the Nintendo DS: I played the shit out of Zookeeper (and I fucking RULED) and then I neglect it. At least I'll be doing some sports. That's the only excuse I can find for buying the Wii. Oh and Ophelia demanded one. I think. She was mumbling something. ;-)

I have no interest in the Wii, and don't see (yet) what the PS3 offers me over the XBox 360.

Biggest problem with the 360 thus far is that Madden blows. Slow, awkward, the franchise mode is a step back, gameplay doesn't work right (this year I quit playing because every game was prolonged by pointless and unavoidable cut-scenes of the linemen getting ready, etc.) - nice graphics, though.

If the PS3 can provide me Madden with great graphics and the gameplay I'm used to, I'll buy one next summer.

If I wasn't up to my eyeballs in babies, I'd get a Wii. As soon as the 360 ships with a built-in HDDVD player (or BluRay?), I think that would be the next one to get. PS3 seems like a crazy boondoggle. Maybe in a year or so, when some the services are online, and the programmers get the hang of writing for yet another wacky Sony-only architecture, the games will nose ahead of the 360. But for now, there seems to be little difference. Plus, the 360 has Rockstar's Table Tennis! Why no Wii version?

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 28 November 2006 03:19 (seventeen years ago) link

The Wii really does look wonderful - my friend Indy, a die-hard RPG and shooter connoisseur, has been raving about the bowling game, for Chrissakes. But sometime around the debut of the Gamecube (whose back catalog still tempts me from time to time), I made the personal conclusion that buying a system was basically plunking down money in order to have a less satisfying life, since games by and large suck away time from things I'd rather be doing, except that I lack the willpower to resist the easy fix of games when they're in the house. :(

More "social" games have a stronger pull, I'll admit - if the Wii gets a Guitar Heroes type game, it might really get tough to resist if I weren't broke all the time..

They might think of another scheme wherein developers are given the chance to finally stretch their talent at minimal upfront $$$ while offering the highest revenue potential for any platform per unit sold, on a console which they themselves make a profit on from launch day forward, yada yada fucking yada.

Anyway if anybody else has $500-700 to throw away for the chance to play such classics as FPS: Apocalypse In The Future, FPS: Apocalypse In The Future, or FPS: Apocalypse In The Future, let me know how fun that shit is, maybe I'll eat ramen for a month and join you.

Played Wii last night, am in LOVE. The Zelda sword-swings aren't anything more than a wiggle of the remote, but that is still way more satisfying/hilarious than button-mash + button-mash. Also, when they come out with a Wii Fly Fishing game, I will be the first in line to buy.

Nintendo: why didn't you bring out a proper console? Why have you gone down the Russell T. Davies route of destroying something good by remaking it for women and gays?

Excellent plan.

The Snes controller was alright in a time before games companies had discovered ergonomics (certainly better than Sega's Saturn/DC strategy of adding buttons to something resembling a dinner plate) - but to release something like it in the present day is just silly. Especially if you're going to copy Sony's uncomfortable and practically unusable analog stick placement.

Predictable reference to Spastics? It's not my fault that Nintendo and chums feel compelled to include them in most of the promotional material:

WILMINGTON, N.C. - A young man accused of robbing a fellow college student of two new PlayStation 3 video game consoles was shot and killed - possibly while holding a game controller - by officers sent to arrest him.

Peyton Strickland, 18, was killed Friday at a house he shared with three roommates, Sheriff Sid Causey said.

Roommate Mike Rhoton said Strickland was unarmed when he got up from playing a Tiger Woods golf game but may have been holding a controller when he went to the door as officers bashed it in. Strickland's dog also was shot to death.

The sheriff said Strickland was shot by members of a specially trained team who went to help university officers serve arrest warrants. Causey said officers considered the arrest a high-risk situation.

"Anytime that someone beats a person severely and commits an armed robbery, I certainly would consider him a risk and a danger," Causey said.

The sheriff said the robbery victim waited in line for three days to buy the units for $641 each at a Wal-Mart. He was unloading them at his campus apartment when one man beat him to the ground while another took the consoles, Causey said.
