Boardwalk Empire: because Walking Dead sucks now.

just watched the latest ep. an hour of what had to be some of the most psychotic television i'd seen in a while (i say this as a huge Breaking Bad fan)

Jimmy and his mom had me squirming the entire time.

loved Van Alden's story about his dad.

Finally saw this week's ep last night and o_O

I've been a supporter of this season all along, haven't really seen the dip in quality others were claiming... but this week's was just gripping television. I'm pretty sure my jaw was on the ground for the last 15 minutes straight, even when I knew what was coming.

did not expect that ending.

sir thermo of thinwall, Monday, 12 December 2011 06:22 (twelve years ago) link

yeah. kudos to them.

gukbe, Monday, 12 December 2011 06:41 (twelve years ago) link

has me somewhat bummed for next season tho

j crunchwrap supreme, Monday, 12 December 2011 12:08 (twelve years ago) link

Ditto. Not even sure how it goes on without him.

sir thermo of thinwall, Monday, 12 December 2011 14:13 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, was not expecting that in the least. I'm mostly disappointed because I really liked where they were taking the character. After the huge reveal of the previous episode, I thought we were going to see him break free of his mother's control and strike out on his own. But, it was still a great episode.

Have to admit though, it must suck to get killed off from a critically successful show like this.

Winter and Pitt talk about it.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 December 2011 15:19 (twelve years ago) link

Thanks for the links Ned, I find it interesting to think about. I mean, its one thing to get cast in Game of Thrones as, say, Ned Stark, because you know full well your character's arc from the get-go. But getting killed off on a show like this must be something completely different. I know, judging by the Empire thread back on ilx (particularly the "ehhhhh Michael Pitt" of the title") that he wasn't really one of the most well-regarded actors on the show, but I really liked him and I'll miss Darmody.

ya - the character and actor were both great imho. considering how much of the story was about him, it's definitely going to be a different (ish) show without him.
i hope they keep Mr Harrow around.

sir thermo of thinwall, Monday, 12 December 2011 15:32 (twelve years ago) link

and i guess he (Darmody) knew he was most likely going to die - i didn't even realize what it mean when they showed his kid wearing his war medals.

sir thermo of thinwall, Monday, 12 December 2011 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I didn't make that connection (also with not wanting Harrow to go with) until he was revealed to be unarmed.

Also just remembering his emphasis on the money passing to his son when he tore up the will.

man darmody jr is gonna get f'd up being alone & raised by gretchen mol

yup & even his lil speech 2 the dude before he puts him on the pony abt being able to go out on his own & play (& get away from his meemaw)

j crunchwrap supreme, Monday, 12 December 2011 15:40 (twelve years ago) link

interesting

Q.What about Michael Shannon’s character, the now-disgraced federal agent Nelson Van Alden?

A.People in the audience who are students of Mob history might pick up on the fact that Cicero, Ill., was the place that became Al Capone’s headquarters in 1924. It wasn’t an accident that we chose to put him somewhere in the Midwest that might or might not have ramifications down the line for him.

Yeah, I laughed out loud when she said "Cicero", I knew exactly where they were going.
