I think these covers veer towards racist when they go to great lengths to make it clear that they've "rescued" these "secretly great songs" from "rap crap" and put them to "real music". Or maybe thats just rockism.

Does this really exist? I mean hip-hop isn't exactly easy to adapt to other genres without sounding "off" which I guess is supposed to be "hilarious"

Either way I don't think this is racist in the slightest. Songs get covered between genres all the time and the results are usually terrible. IMO all the racism talk ITT is coming from the idea that it's white people dealing with "things that black people do (?)" so it's easy to call them racist scumbags w/o any thought whatsoever

yeah I guess I can see why some people here would get hung up on that but it's not as though "Get Low" or "Gin and Juice" aren't ridiculous anyway, I mean they're clearly meant to be funny in some way and therefore are overripe for parody, meaning that yes people are going to make fun of this and no they are almost never funnier than the original. I suppose I can see how you can call that racism but it's like three levels removed from anything meaningful whatsoever

I remember once I was looking for it, and I stumbled across a now-deleted video called "Sittin On Tha Toilet (White Version)" and it was like a twenty something librarian looking white girl doing it in dainty, stilted english, providing extra enunciation--sitting on the toilet. And in her upload info section said THIS IS NOT RACIST and someone obviously clued her in that it was because now it's gone. And whenever I hear twee indie rock version of a rap song, I think of this misguided white girl on the toilet.
