Dude, that's the version on the legendary J0hn & D4ria wedding mix CD-R thread on 77 and no one knew what it was!

like i think the white girls with acoustic guitars covers arent actually racist, if anything i kinda love them for their strange sincerity but the whole autotune the news OMG CRUNK HAHAHA shit is just nagl

є(٥_ ٥)э, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

well, exactly, which is why predicating a joke on ITS WHITE PPL... AND THEYRE RAPPING! is really p racist and also stupid, like rap is hardly this outrageous and foreign thing to point and gawk at

this is well-put

coop otm, this is a situation where i feel pretty comfortable painting with a broad brush

i mean part of what is at play here is that acoustic or whatever covers of rap songs are such a heinous crime against art that "racism" is one of very few concepts that really approaches how truly horrendous they are

max max max max, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:25 (twelve years ago) link

haha totally

~connecticut~ (henrietta lacks), Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

i basically hate rap

max max max max, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

I think these covers veer towards racist when they go to great lengths to make it clear that they've "rescued" these "secretly great songs" from "rap crap" and put them to "real music". Or maybe thats just rockism.

I came in to find out why "Texts from Bennett" was churning up so much dust in New Answers. I should have known the answer was simple: clusterfuck.

like obv the underlying production of rap resists being able to be co-opted by 'musicianly' means (and obv there has been a long long tradition of of disregarding hip hop as not real music bcz of lack of melody or instruments or etc) but to say that ALL acoustic covers of rap songs are inherently evil + unforgivable crimes against art (even if every single one up until now has in fact been; a dubious claim anyways) is to do it a real disservice and to deny one of the most amazing things about rap, which is the pop music universality of it that aero was talking about in his previous post

Does this really exist? I mean hip-hop isn't exactly easy to adapt to other genres without sounding "off" which I guess is supposed to be "hilarious"

Either way I don't think this is racist in the slightest. Songs get covered between genres all the time and the results are usually terrible. IMO all the racism talk ITT is coming from the idea that it's white people dealing with "things that black people do (?)" so it's easy to call them racist scumbags w/o any thought whatsoever

Given the real pain and peril in the world, worrying about this is like getting bummed out by a pimple while the earthquake liquifies your street.

max max max max, Thursday, 29 December 2011 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

coop has a point here j0n A; i mean the 'lol rap' cover version thing does exist and there is an unsavory racist subtext within it bcz the lols are at the expense of certain cultural signifiers
