Copy Editor

What they do: Edit written work to prepare it for publication.
Why the job allows it: While copy editors may do reporting, a lot of their time is spent with a guide book in one hand and a red pen in the other. If their hair is red too, it just makes them a little more distinguishable.

I am a web designer, but fuck it all, I can't do anything I want with my hair. I have to be a grown-up creative person.

If I had any hair, I could do whatever I wanted with it.

They left out tattoo artist, independent book/music store clerk, and Whole Foods/Trader Joe's staff member. One of my sons is a manager at a high volume commercial blueprint shop and does the most bizarre things with his hair - at most, he wears a hat at work for awhile, but it's generally no big deal if he's sporting rainbow dreads or a brilliant red faux hawk.

I mean, I guess it wouldn't be a fiasco if I came in with weird hair, but I still work in a corporate office, where occasionally guys walk around in suits, so I'm not about to try it.
