Patrice O'Neal, a fixture in the New York comedy scene for two decades who was most recently seen in the Comedy Central Roast Of Charlie Sheen, has passed away according to sources close to the comedian.

Talk show host Opie of the Opie & Anthony Radio Show tweeted this morning, "Yes, it's true that our pal Patrice O'Neal has passed away. The funniest and best thinker I've ever known PERIOD."

O'Neal suffered a stroke in October after a long battle with diabetes. The announcement about his condition was made by a group of his comedian friends and peers on the popular Sirius radio show, but few details have been made known since then at the wishes of his family.

he had a really hilarious routine about how he doesn't litter because he worries that the trash would fall on a dead white woman and he'd get arrested.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 20:01 (twelve years ago) link

his rape jokes were so awesome!

bingbert, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

i've never heard him tell any of those?

wil smif, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

apparently he told a donkey punch joke in his HBO special that he called a "rape joke" when he was defending Opie and Anthony for joking about rape

O’Neal also criticized Gibson’s other guest, Sonia Ossorio, and her organization, the National Organization of Women, for “not representing the nappy ho part, she’s representing just the ho. The nappy headed part, she has nothing to do with, just the ho.”

had Maron-sized issues, as evidenced by his interview with Maron, but was fuckin' funny.

First noticed him on Tough Crowd.

Here's him on Jay Mohr's podcast, which I think they recorded before and released shortly after he had his stroke

I first saw him on Tough Crowd too. He was one of the funniest regulars along with Greg Giraldo (also RIP, WTF) and Jim Norton. His stand up is good but IMO he just seemed like a really awesome guy to shoot the shit with, definitely someone who would be very good for podcasts, etc., very quick witted, damn this sucks

I'm in the mood to party (J0n Arbuckle), Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:09 (twelve years ago) link

Marc Maron has pulled Patrice's episode of WTF out of the pay archive and made it available for free if anyone wants to hear it: http://wtfpod.libsyn.com/webpage/patrice-o-neal-remembered

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:09 (twelve years ago) link

yeah tough crowd was one of the worst shows in human history but o'neal and giraldo were actually pretty much the only defensible people on it.

iatee, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:13 (twelve years ago) link

Greg Giraldo is dead??????

OH NOES, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:14 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i wd watch that show occasionally and they were the only two I didn't wanna punch. xp

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:15 (twelve years ago) link

Giraldo died of "accidental" overdose in 2010. xp

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:16 (twelve years ago) link

WOah. I didn't know that either.

~curious orange~, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

(also OTM that Giraldo and O'Neal were the only ppl keeping Tough Crowd on the air; why the hell did anyone ever allow Rich Vos on a stage)

OH NOES, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

Tough Crowd got much better towards the end when there was a pretty obvious "fuck it, we're getting cancelled" attitude throughout the whole show, so they'd do really weird things like play basketball with Colin Quinn (who was about as awful as you'd expect)

If nothing else it was really one of the only shows that truly felt totally improvised. Denis Leary was on the show once and didn't really say much, offering a few canned jokes that Giraldo totally called him out on, IMO the show's best moment. They had Jamie Kennedy on the show once (to promote Malibu's Most Wanted? or something stupid like that) and he was silent nearly the entire time. Colin himself wasn't even that good.

I'm in the mood to party (J0n Arbuckle), Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:21 (twelve years ago) link

this is because Colin Quinn is fucking terrible; I used to watch the show mostly to see how hard he would bomb

OH NOES, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, the thing that made me watch it most nights was knowing that it could devolve into a slugfest at any moment.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:24 (twelve years ago) link

ie, "evolve"

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:25 (twelve years ago) link

tough crowd was like being in a room w/ a bunch of hs drop outs talking about what they saw on fox news last night

iatee, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:30 (twelve years ago) link

might be able to drop "like" if it was still on

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

you know what is really tripping me out, is that it is likely Greg Giraldo knew both Barack and Michelle Obama from law school

OH NOES, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

i kinda loved tough crowd -- granted i was 14 but idk, obv it was often offensive & shitty but those guys would always shit on each other which was pretty cool

rich vos was amazing on last comic standing btw -- i mean his stand up was w/e, but like in the house i remember him being hilarious

v-shasty, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

yknow I'm actually taking this Giraldo thing kinda hard...

this is so sad. 'elephant in the room' is terrific.

he was pretty evil but just undeniable. you "object" but it hardly seem like it matters.

my favorite bit from that special is a long riff that ends up marrying his diabetes with his bizarre misogyny. after needling a bunch of audience members about whether or not they're into piss, he imitates his girlfriend: "baby, i think you need to see a doctor or something... because your pee tastes delicious"

I re-listened to the Maron interview...I still feel like most of what he thinks is fucked up, but the way he expresses what he thinks is something else. His analogy about women and men being sharks, and women dating penguins and eventually complaining about why aren't they more like sharks is just funny. Or his idea that blacks don't have a hitler to hate, so he just hates the idea of white people in general. Weird and fucked up but he says it in a really fucking funny way.

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 1 December 2011 08:48 (twelve years ago) link

most comedians have pretty fucked up views on everything but sometimes Patrice is dead on. his speech to Seth Macfarlane at the Sheen roast was amazing, it was something like "Hanna had to slap the shit out of Barbera when he started to think he was bigger than Yogi Bear"

I'm in the mood to party (J0n Arbuckle), Thursday, 1 December 2011 14:29 (twelve years ago) link

he had a way with a super specific detail thrown in to a seemingly-average bit that sets the whole scene. like, a bit about arguing with your girlfriend (zzz) ends with "i'm about to push this bitch through a fishtank"
