The nu-ILX Michael Richards thread: Can you sue a comedian for ranting at you?

I was thinking of posting on the RealILX thread and then I thought - no leave it - but then I saw this...
http://www.tmz.com/2006/11/22/not-laughing-all-the-way-to-the-bank/
And wondered whether there was a precendent for it? And what was the legal position? And why would a retired judge be involved? So many questions I know...

I know you probably had the best of intentions but seriously if I see or hear anything referring to Michael Richards and/or racism and/or stand-up comedy for that matter I'm setting the fucking chimps loose.

There should be an "again" in there somewhere but I am bitter and have no admin to flex here.

why would you click on a thread with the words Michael Richards in it if you never want to read about him again?

Ned T.Rifle, Thursday, 23 November 2006 09:49 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe he was wondering if he was going to hold out kuyt and bellamy

Redneck uncle at Thanksgiving: "I don't get what the big deal is -- he was just calling a spade a spade."

Later: "If anything, he'll get a million dollars from this. I sure as hell hadn't heard of him before."

Rest of family: "Sure you have, he was on Seinfeld."

Uncle: "Aw, I don't watch that shit. That Seinfeld is an idiot."

hahahah redneck soon-to-be-step-uncle (for lack of better term) in drunken rant at thanksgiving: "The white male is the minority in this country now"

i had to leave the room.

Thanksgiving: the time for discovering wonderful things about your extended family!

omg I thought my Texas redneck family was bad. This is exactly the kind of thing my mother would say.

My grandfather once slipped out with the n-word when he was talking to me. He corrected himself to "colored guy."

when talking about the war my aunt once said 'sand-n*gger' and seemed genuinely confused when I told her that was the most racist thing I had ever heard.

WTF, is it "my family is more racist than your family" day on ILX???

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Monday, 27 November 2006 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes it is! My uncle used the term "sand-n*gger" earlier in the day, actually, at which point I had to get up and join my uncle's son and his boyfriend on the patio.

I had a Korean friend in high school who, upon learning my Lebanese descent, decided he needed to call me "camel jockie" etc etc type of names, which was kind of ridiculous, since Lebanon isn't exactly in the desert. Or dessert. Also because the other 3/4 of me is not Lebanese.

My uncle was teasing my Australian wife, asking her what crimes her penal ancestors committed. I tried to shut him up by telling her, "It's okay. Our ancestors apprehended runaway slaves."

Didn't shut him up.

I'm faintly related to Jean Lafitte, who's a kind of folk hero in Louisiana, despite having made his fortune dealing in contraband slaves.

WTF, is it "my family is more racist than your family" day on ILX???

Yes.

lolz.

my family is proud of the fact that our aussie bloodline began with an ancestor stealing a loaf of bread to feed her starving family.

grady (grady), Monday, 27 November 2006 17:15 (seventeen years ago) link

(I don't even know what my ancestors did or didn't do. I'm pretty sure the Russian Jew had clean hands, slavewise, but I'm not sure about those fur traders.)

My family merely enjoyed a moment of quiet, shared liberal indignation over the Richards outburst before moving on to other topics.

See, all the folks in my family who sound like y'all's relations are dead.

Jesse Jax, a few other lib-fascists call for media to "ban" the N-word (Rev Red Light sez it's "unprotected" by the First Amendment):

Sounds like time for ILX lib-racist fave Quentin Tarantino to switch to Eric Rohmer-style dialogue.

Dr M, Tuesday, 28 November 2006 14:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Unfortunately the lawsuit and the grandstanding reverends are going to end up overshadowing the wrong done by Richards. I wish they would just issue a brief statement and move on - they'd actually get much more public sympathy that way.

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 14:44 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah but they wouldn't get any money.

this kramer bullshit didn't come up once at my thanksgiving, so proud.

"Nothing will ever beat Only Fools an 'orses!"

This deliberate confusing of Kramer and Richards has lead to "the real Kramer" getting hatemail.

During the disco era, Kenny Kramer came up with a piece of electronic jewelry that apparently did so well, it put him in the black for some time.
